  • Enter Culture, Exit Arts?
Enter Culture, Exit Arts? Key debates of contemporary cultural sociology – the rise of the ‘cultural omni- vore’, the fate of classical ‘highbrow’ culture, the popularization, commercializa- tion and globalization of culture – deal with temporal changes. Yet, systematic research about these processes is scarce due to the lack of suitable longitudinal data. This book explores these questions through the lens of a crucial institution of cultural mediation – the culture sections in quality European newspapers – from 1960 to 2010. Starting from the framework of cultural stratification and employing system- atic content analysis both quantitative and qualitative of more than 13,000 newspaper articles, Enter Culture, Exit Arts? presents a synthetic yet empirically rich and detailed account of cultural transformation in Europe over the last five decades. It shows how classifications and hierarchies of culture have changed in course of the process towards increased cultural heterogeneity. Furthermore, it conceptualizes the key trends of rising popular culture and declining highbrow arts as two simultaneous processes: the one of legitimization of popular culture and the other of popularization of traditional legitimate culture, both important for the loosening of the boundary between ‘highbrow’ and ‘popular’. Through careful comparative analysis and illustrative snapshots into the spe- cific socio- historical contexts in which the newspapers and their representations of culture are embedded – in Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK – the book reveals the key patterns and diversity of European variations in the transformation of cultural hierarchies since the 1960s. The book is a col- lective endeavour of a large- scale international research project active between 2013 and 2018.

THE COMMISSIONED FLUTE CHOIR PIECES PRESENTED BY UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE FLUTE CHOIRS AND NFA SPONSORED FLUTE CHOIRS AT NATIONAL FLUTE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONVENTIONS WITH A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FLUTE CHOIR AND ITS REPERTOIRE DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Yoon Hee Kim Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2013 D.M.A. Document Committee: Katherine Borst Jones, Advisor Dr. Russel C. Mikkelson Dr. Charles M. Atkinson Karen Pierson Copyright by Yoon Hee Kim 2013 Abstract The National Flute Association (NFA) sponsors a range of non-performance and performance competitions for performers of all ages. Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

  • Ilmari Krohn and the Early French Contacts of Finnish Musicology: Mobility, Networking and Interaction1 Helena Tyrväinen
Ilmari Krohn and the Early French Contacts of Finnish Musicology: Mobility, Networking and Interaction1 Helena Tyrväinen Abstract Conceived in memory of the late Professor of Musicology of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Urve Lippus (1950–2015) and to honour her contribution to music history research, the article analyses transcultural relations and the role of cultural capitals in the discipline during its early phase in the uni- versity context. The focus is on the early French contacts of the founder of institutional Finnish musicology, the Uni- versity of Helsinki Professor Ilmari Krohn (1867–1960) and his pupils. The analysis of Krohn’s mobility, networking and interaction is based on his correspondence and documentation concerning his early congress journeys to London (1891) and to Paris (1900). Two French correspondents stand out in this early phase of his career as a musicologist: Julien Tiersot in the area of comparative research on traditional music, and Georges Houdard in the field of Gregorian chant and neume notation. By World War I Krohn was quite well-read in French-language musicology. Paris served him also as a base for international networking more generally. Accomplished musicians, Krohn and his musicology students Armas Launis, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Haapanen even had an artistic bond with French repertoires. My results contradict the claim that early Finnish musicology was exclusively the domain of German influences. In an article dedicated to the memory of Urve Lip- Academy of Music and Theatre, Urve considered pus, who was for many years Professor of Musicol- that a knowledge of the music history of Finland, ogy and director of the discipline at the Estonian as well as of the origins of music history writing Academy of Music and Theatre, it is appropriate in this neighbouring country, would be useful to to discuss international cooperation, mobility of Estonians.

  • The Folk Music of Bulgaria a Selective Bibliography and Discography Katharine Lambaria LIS 511: Bibliography December 20, 2013
The Folk Music of Bulgaria A Selective Bibliography and Discography Katharine Lambaria LIS 511: Bibliography December 20, 2013 Abstract This bibliography is a selective representation of items relating to traditional Bulgarian music, or Bulgarian folk music, that are located at the Music & Performing Arts Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It includes encyclopedia and dictionary entries, books, journal articles, and sound recordings in compact disc format. Text resources are arranged from general to specific, starting first with the encyclopedia entries followed by monographs and then journal articles. Compact discs are arranged alphabetically. In regards to the printed materials included, I have decided to arrange from general to specific because of the intent of this bibliography: to provide a guided reading list for or in place of a course on Bulgarian music. This bibliography is intended for University of Illinois students with an interest in Bulgarian musical culture. Items are in English and have an emphasis on traditional practices. There is more content within the library than what is presented here, including several more journal articles and a few more albums of Bulgarian wedding music. These items are not included because they are either not in English, repetitive, in a different format than CD or are outside the intended folk music scope of this bibliography. Materials spread a wide range of years as an attempt to give a thorough picture of how concepts changed over time. One may wish to consult previous editions of certain materials, such as the Grove Dictionary entry, to understand these changes. Bibliography Petrov, Stoyan, Magdalena Manolova, and Donna A.

ÖG<nr> anger låtnummer i Övergaards folkmusiksamling.
