Fifth Avenue and Thirty-ninth Street Established 1837 — Overture to Byron's "Manfred," Op. 115 . Robert Schumann (Born at Zwickau, June 8, 1810; died at Endenich, July 29, 1856.) Schumann, as many other Germans of his day, was a passionate admirer of Byron. He wrote a chorus and an aria for an opera, founded on "The Corsair," but he abandoned his purpose, and the music was not published. He set to music three of the "Hebrew Melodies." His perturbed spirit found delight in "Manfred," and he said that he never devoted himself to composition with such lavish love and concentra- tion of power as in writing the music of "Manfred." Wasielewski tells us that, when Schumann once read the poem aloud at Dusseldorf, his voice broke, he burst into tears, he was so overcome that he could read no more.

Key debates of contemporary cultural sociology – the rise of the ‘cultural omni- vore’, the fate of classical ‘highbrow’ culture, the popularization, commercializa- tion and globalization of culture – deal with temporal changes. Yet, systematic research about these processes is scarce due to the lack of suitable longitudinal data. This book explores these questions through the lens of a crucial institution of cultural mediation – the culture sections in quality European newspapers – from 1960 to 2010. Starting from the framework of cultural stratification and employing system- atic content analysis both quantitative and qualitative of more than 13,000 newspaper articles, Enter Culture, Exit Arts? presents a synthetic yet empirically rich and detailed account of cultural transformation in Europe over the last five decades. It shows how classifications and hierarchies of culture have changed in course of the process towards increased cultural heterogeneity. Furthermore, it conceptualizes the key trends of rising popular culture and declining highbrow arts as two simultaneous processes: the one of legitimization of popular culture and the other of popularization of traditional legitimate culture, both important for the loosening of the boundary between ‘highbrow’ and ‘popular’. Through careful comparative analysis and illustrative snapshots into the spe- cific socio- historical contexts in which the newspapers and their representations of culture are embedded – in Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK – the book reveals the key patterns and diversity of European variations in the transformation of cultural hierarchies since the 1960s. The book is a col- lective endeavour of a large- scale international research project active between 2013 and 2018.

    Ilmari Krohn and the Early French Contacts of Finnish Musicology: Mobility, Networking and Interaction1 Helena Tyrväinen Abstract Conceived in memory of the late Professor of Musicology of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Urve Lippus (1950–2015) and to honour her contribution to music history research, the article analyses transcultural relations and the role of cultural capitals in the discipline during its early phase in the uni- versity context. The focus is on the early French contacts of the founder of institutional Finnish musicology, the Uni- versity of Helsinki Professor Ilmari Krohn (1867–1960) and his pupils. The analysis of Krohn’s mobility, networking and interaction is based on his correspondence and documentation concerning his early congress journeys to London (1891) and to Paris (1900). Two French correspondents stand out in this early phase of his career as a musicologist: Julien Tiersot in the area of comparative research on traditional music, and Georges Houdard in the field of Gregorian chant and neume notation. By World War I Krohn was quite well-read in French-language musicology. Paris served him also as a base for international networking more generally. Accomplished musicians, Krohn and his musicology students Armas Launis, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Haapanen even had an artistic bond with French repertoires. My results contradict the claim that early Finnish musicology was exclusively the domain of German influences. Juni 2021 SLUB Dresden erwirbt Korrespondenzen von Clara Schumann und Johannes Brahms mit Ernst Rudorff Die Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB Dresden) erwirbt Korrespondenzen von Clara Schumann (1819-1896) und Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) jeweils mit dem Berliner Dirigenten Ernst Rudorff (1840-1916). Die Korrespondenzen waren bislang für die Wissenschaft unzugänglich. Die Kulturstiftung der Länder fördert den Ankauf mit 42.500 Euro. Dazu Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert, Generalsekretär der Kulturstiftung der Länder: „Die Botschaft, dass diese mehr als 400 Schriftstücke, die zuvor in Privatbesitz waren, nun erstmals der Öffentlichkeit und der Wissenschaft zugänglich sind – jetzt bereits online verfügbar auf der Webseite der SLUB Dresden –, dürfte zahlreiche Musikwissenschaftlerinnen und Musikwissenschaftler aus der ganzen Welt dorthin locken. Die wertvollen Korrespondenzen sind nicht nur Zeugnisse von Clara Schumanns ausgedehnter Konzerttätigkeit quer durch den Kontinent. Der Briefwechsel zwischen Brahms und Rudorff besteht aus 16 Briefen von Brahms und zwölf Gegenbriefen von Rudorff sowie ein Blatt mit Noten, beschrieben von beiden. Beide Briefwechsel wurden in das niedersächsische Verzeichnis national wertvollen Kulturgutes aufgenommen. Rund sechs Jahre (1844-1850) wohnte Clara Schumann gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann in Dresden. Die angekauften Korrespondenzen Schumanns mit Rudorff beginnen 1858 und enden mit bis dahin hoher Regelmäßigkeit im Jahr ihres Todes, 1896.

    Musical Performance Practice on Sensor-based Instruments Atau Tanaka Faculty of Media Arts and Sciences Chukyo University, Toyota-shi, Japan [email protected] Introduction Performance has traditionally been a principal outlet for musical expression – it is the moment when music is communicated from musician to listener. This tradition has been challenged and augmented in this century – recorded and broadcast media technologies have brought new modes of listening to music, while conceptual developments have given rise to extremes such as music not to be heard. Computer music makes up part of these developments in new methods of creation and reception of music. It is at its origin a studio based art, one that gave composers possibilities to create a music not possible with traditional performative means. Realizing music in the electronic and computer music studios freed the composer from traditional channels of composition-interpretation-performance, allowing him to focus in a new way on sonic materials. Advancements in computer processing speeds have brought with it the capabilities to realize this music in real time, in effect giving us the possibility to take it out of the studio and put it on stage. This has introduced the problematic of how to articulate computer generated music in a concert setting. Concurrently, developments in the fields of computer-human interface (CHI) and virtual reality (VR) have introduced tools to investigate new interaction modalities between user and computer (Laurel 1990). The intersection of these fields with computer music has resulted in the field of gestural computer music instrument design. The creation of gestural and sensor based musical instruments makes possible the articulation of computer generated sound live through performer intervention.

    Ernst Rudorff (b. Berlin, 18. January 1840 – d. Berlin, 31. December 1916) Symphony no. 2 in G minor, op. 40 Born in Berlin, Ernst Friedrich Karl Rudorff was a German conductor, composer, pianist and teacher whose mother knew Mendelssohn and studied with Karl Friedrich Zelter (notable for founding the Berlin Singakademie, amongst other achievements), while his father was a professor of law. Rudorff’s parents’ home was often visited by German Romantic composers of the day, and he numbered Johann Friedrich Reichardt and Ludwig Tieck among his ancestors. From 1850 he studied piano and composition with Woldemar Bargiel (1828–1897), Clara Schumann’s half-brother, who, having studied at the Leipzig Conservatory prior to Rudorff, became a noted teacher and composer emulating though not copying Robert Schumann’s musical style. From 1852 to 1854 Rudorff studied violin with Louis Ries (1830- 1913), a member of the Ries family of musicians, who settled in London in 1853, and he studied piano for a short while with Clara Schumann in 1858, who added him to her list of lifelong musical friends, a list which included Mendelssohn, Joseph Joachim and Brahms. Subsequently, from 1859 to 1860, Rudorff studied history and theology at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig and music at Leipzig Conservatory from 1859 to 1861, where Ignaz Moscheles (for piano) and Julius Rietz (for composition) were his teachers.     Woldemar Bargiel (b. Berlin, 3 October 1828 - d. Berlin, 23 February 1897) Adagio Op. 38 Preface Woldemar Bargiel enjoyed considerable renown as a composer, conductor, and teacher during his lifetime. Born in Berlin on 3 October 1828, Bargiel benefitted from being a member of a gifted musical family. His father, Adolph Bargiel, was a highly respected piano and voice teacher who taught his son piano, violin, and harmony. Bargiel’s mother, Marianne (née Tromlitz) Wieck, who had divorced Friedrich Wieck in 1824, was the mother of Clara Schumann (née Wieck). In addition to the musical training he received from his parents Bargiel also studied theory with Siegfried Wilhelm Dehn, an eminent teacher, theorist, editor, and librarian. Initial success Bargiel experienced was due in part to Clara. Being nine years older than Bargiel and enjoying a lucrative career as an exceptional concert pianist, Clara’s network of foremost European musicians furthered her brother’s educa- tion and career. Introductions to Felix Mendelssohn and especially to Robert Schumann, who eventually became Bargiel’s brother-in-law, proved crucial. Taking Robert’s advice to enroll at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1846 at the tender age of 16, Bargiel began his extraordinary training. There he studied piano with Ignaz Moscheles and Louis Plaidy; violin with Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim; and theory and composition with Moritz Hauptmann, Ernst Friedrich Richter, Julius Rietz, and Niels Gade. Upon completion of his studies Bargiel returned to Berlin in 1850. Having quickly developed a favorable reputation as a teacher and composer, some of Bargiel’s early compositions - most notably his first piano trio - were published under the auspices of Clara and Robert Schumann.
