[email protected] YUJA WANG to Repla
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARTIST CHANGE March 21, 2019 Contact: Deirdre Roddin (212) 875-5700; [email protected] YUJA WANG To Replace Maurizio Pollini In One-Night-Only Performance of SCHUMANN’s Piano Concerto Conducted by MUSIC DIRECTOR JAAP VAN ZWEDEN Program Also To Include J. WAGENAAR’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture BEETHOVEN’s Symphony No. 7 March 27, 2019 Yuja Wang will replace Maurizio Pollini, who has cancelled in order to fully recover from a brief illness, in the one-night-only performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the New York Philharmonic led by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also include Johan Wagenaar’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The performance will mark Yuja Wang’s 24th with the New York Philharmonic; she most recently appeared with the Orchestra and Jaap van Zweden in February–March 2018, both in New York and on tour to Asia. She will return next season for performances of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings, June 11–13, 2020, also conducted by Jaap van Zweden and featuring Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin. The Boston Globe wrote of her performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto last month with the Boston Symphony Orchestra: “Not just a vehicle for virtuosic fireworks, the concerto calls for a keen listening ear and attunement to the larger ensemble… Wang demonstrated all that in spades. Like an elite figure skater or gymnast, the athletic effort she expended was palpable, but if the physical feats took any toll, the audience never saw it.” Biographies Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang is set to achieve new heights in critical superlatives and audience ovations during the 2018–19 season, through recitals, concert series, season residencies, and extensive tours with some of the world’s most venerated ensembles and conductors. -
Amid the Coronavirus Pandemic, Remember “Thanks for the Memory” Oscar-Winning
Back to Newsroom (/newsroom) Leo Robin Music Amid the Coronavirus Pandemic, Remember "Thanks for the Memory" Oscar-Winning Lyricist Leo Robin Who Served on The Hollywood Office of Music War Council During WWII - The Hollywood Walk of Fame Should Install #LeosLostStar" Awarded to Him 30 Years Ago Tuesday, April 28, 2020 3:18 PM SHERMAN OAKS, CA / ACCESSWIRE / April 28, 2020 / Turning on the radio back in 1944 you would have heard the most celebrated jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton and vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Dinah Washington and actress Marlene Dietrich singing the wartime song "No Love, No Nothin'." Lyricist Leo Robin wrote the heartfelt lyrics to this song during World War II when romantic and sentimental songs about the girls left behind captured the mood of the country. In The Great Jazz and Pop Vocal Albums, Will Friedwald gives his interpretation, "this no-frills love song is refreshingly straightforward. No frills, no love, no nothin', in fact -- it's all about the deprivation of the 'love-sick girl' on the home front is suffering; [...] there's an obvious parallel with wartime rationing and shortages. It was near impossible to get sugar, rubber, tires, or gasoline, among other goods and the same thing applied to love, she's not getting any of that either." Today's songwriters and musicians amid the Coronavirus pandemic follow in the footsteps of those during World War II in writing and performing songs that capture the mood of the country during this new war against what President Trump calls the "invisible enemy." For example, Alicia Keys, a 15-time Grammy winner, debuted her new powerful anthem "Good Job" to honor the unsung heroes in her own life during a CNN global town hall addressing the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic. -
ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 Fadi Kheir Fadi LETTERS from the LEADERSHIP
ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 Fadi Kheir Fadi LETTERS FROM THE LEADERSHIP The New York Philharmonic’s 2019–20 season certainly saw it all. We recall the remarkable performances ranging from Berlioz to Beethoven, with special pride in the launch of Project 19 — the single largest commissioning program ever created for women composers — honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Together with Lincoln Center we unveiled specific plans for the renovation and re-opening of David Geffen Hall, which will have both great acoustics and also public spaces that can welcome the community. In March came the shock of a worldwide pandemic hurtling down the tracks at us, and on the 10th we played what was to be our final concert of the season. Like all New Yorkers, we tried to come to grips with the life-changing ramifications The Philharmonic responded quickly and in one week created NY Phil Plays On, a portal to hundreds of hours of past performances, to offer joy, pleasure, solace, and comfort in the only way we could. In August we launched NY Phil Bandwagon, bringing live music back to New York. Bandwagon presented 81 concerts from Chris Lee midtown to the far reaches of every one of the five boroughs. In the wake of the Erin Baiano horrific deaths of Black men and women, and the realization that we must all participate to change society, we began the hard work of self-evaluation to create a Philharmonic that is truly equitable, diverse, and inclusive. The severe financial challenge caused by cancelling fully a third of our 2019–20 concerts resulting in the loss of $10 million is obvious. -

BEVERLY “RUBY” ROSS - an Archive
BEVERLY “RUBY” ROSS - An Archive Beverly Ross, who also used the pseudonym Rachel Frank, was born in the Bronx but moved with her family as a child to Lakewood, NJ. Given piano lessons, she showed a natural musical ability and early on knew she wanted to be a professional musician. She got her break while a teenager living in the Bronx where she pitched her songs to writers of the iconic Brill Building. Ross would be known for many top 40 hits but one of her most enduring, written with Julius Dixon, was “Lollipop”. It was ultimately made into a top hit by the Chordettes but she had originally recorded it herself with Ronald Gumm as the duo “Ronald & Ruby” and took it to #20 on the charts. But when it was discovered that Gumm was African-American, networks and other venues started cancelling their appearances; not wanting an interracial duo to offend audiences. A true pioneer indeed. She wrote songs and lyrics for many of the top performers at the time including one of the last hits for Bill Haley and the Comets, "Dim, Dim The Lights (I Want Some Atmosphere)" which was a hit in 1955. She also wrote “Dixieland Rock” which was made into a hit and performed by Elvis Presley in the film “King Creole”. Elvis also covered her “Girl of My Best Friend” as did many others including Bryan Ferry. She also scored a huge hit with “Judy’s Turn To Cry” performed by Leslie Gore. Another big hit was “Candy Man” that Roy Orbison made into a hit and was the “B” side to “Crying”. -

1985 - OST the Last Emperor Sunday, 03 August 2008 13:54
1985 - OST The Last Emperor Sunday, 03 August 2008 13:54 The Last Emperor, director Bernardo Bertolucci's epic tale of Pu Yi, the exiled final potentate of China's 3,000-year old Qing dynasty, was the big winner at the 1988 Academy Awards, taking Oscars for (among others) Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score. The composing trio of Sakamoto/Byrne/Su was an unusual one to be sure, but it's clearly Sakamoto who carries the day here. The avant-garde trained/former Yellow Magic Orchestra pop mastermind crafted a seamless fusion of grand Western themes, Asian shadings, and his own deliciously distinct timbrel sensibilities; an accessible if deceptively modern classicism. Not surprisingly given his Talking Heads roots, Byrne's efforts are more rhythmic and minimal, yet his consuming passion for world music thoroughly evidences itself as well. His lyric and lilting "Main Title Theme" (one of the film's unusual elements was its use of two main themes by separate composers) may offer a pleasant surprise to listeners overly familiar with his pop work. The composer Cong Su is represented by just one cut; but it's a gentle, ethereal spin on Chinese folk influences that fits well with his fellow composers' work. --Jerry McCulley DB: "Bernardo, the director, came and saw Stop Making Sense. He saw it in a theatre in Rome and he was knocked out. He liked the film and the performance, but the audience got involved in the film. They got up and danced, they jumped up on the stage, they sang along and whooped and hollered. -

Beneath the ground, the wooden casket I am trapped in is being lowered deeper and deeper into the cold, dark earth. Fear overtakes me as I fall into a paralytic state. I can hear the dirt being shoveled over me. My heart pounds through my chest. I can’t scream, and if I could, who would hear me? Just as the final shovel of soil is being packed tightly over me, I convulse out of my nightmare into the sweat- and urine-soaked bed in the small apartment on the island of Manhattan that my family calls home. Shaken and disoriented, I make my way out of the tiny back bedroom into the pitch-dark living room, where my mother and father sleep on a convertible couch. I stand at the foot of their bed just staring … waiting.
