The Dismantling of an Urban School System: Detroit, 1980-2014
The Dismantling of an Urban School System: Detroit, 1980-2014 by Leanne Kang A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Educational Studies) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Jeffrey E. Mirel, Co-Chair Associate Professor Robert B. Bain, Co-Chair Professor Vincent L. Hutchings Associate Professor Vilma M. Mesa Assistant Professor Angeline Spain © Leanne Kang 2015 DEDICATION To my former students. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation was possible due in large part to my adviser, Jeffrey Mirel and his seminal study of the Detroit Public Schools (1907-81). Inspired by The Rise and Fall of an Urban School System—which I title my dissertation after—I decided early in my graduate work to investigate what happened to Detroit’s school system after 1980. Thanks to Jeff’s mentorship, I quickly found a research topic that was deeply meaningful and interesting to the very end. He and his wife, Barbara Mirel, are also patrons of my husband’s music. Jeff was the adviser every graduate student hopes to have. The completion of this dissertation would not have been possible without Bob Bain courageously jumping into the middle of a project. I was so fortunate; Bob is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He modeled a way of thinking that I will take with me for the rest of my career. His feedback on every draft was incredibly insightful—sometimes groundbreaking— helping me see where to go next in the jungle of data and theory. And always, Bob believed in me and this project. -

February 10, 2012 9:30Am & 11:30Am
SDCDArtsNotes An Educational Study Guide from San Diego Civic Dance / San Diego Park & Recreation School Shows – February 10, 2012 9:30am & 11:30am Casa del Prado Theatre, Balboa Park “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Defining Moments --Leonardo da Vinci Welcome! The San Diego Civic Dance Program welcomes you to the school-day performance of Collage 2012: Defining Moments, featuring the acclaimed dancers from the San Diego Civic Dance Company in selected numbers from their currently running theatrical performance. The City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department’s Dance Program has been lauded as the standard for which other city-wide dance programs nationwide measure themselves, and give our nearly 3,000 students the ability to work with excellent teachers in a wide variety of dance disciplines. The dancers that comprise the San Diego Civic Dance Company serve as “Dance Ambassadors” for the City of San Diego throughout the year at events as diverse as The Student Shakespeare Festival (for which they received the prize for outstanding Collage entry), Disneyland Resort and at Balboa Park’s December Nights event, to name but a few. In addition to the talented City Dance Staff, these gifted dancers also are given the opportunity to work with noted choreographers from Broadway, London’s West End, Las Vegas, and Major Motion Pictures throughout the year. Collage 2012: Defining Moments represents the culmination of choreographic efforts begun in the summer of 2011. Andrea Feier, Dance Specialist for the City of San Diego gave the choreographers a simple guideline: pick a moment, a time, or an event that inspired you – and then reflect that moment in choreography. -

Don DeLillo’s Promiscuous Fictions: The Adulterous Triangle of Sex, Space, and Language Diana Marie Jenkins A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of English University of NSW, December 2005 This thesis is dedicated to the loving memory of a wonderful grandfather, and a beautiful niece. I wish they were here to see me finish what both saw me start. Contents Acknowledgements 1 Introduction 2 Chapter One 26 The Space of the Hotel/Motel Room Chapter Two 81 Described Space and Sexual Transgression Chapter Three 124 The Reciprocal Space of the Journey and the Image Chapter Four 171 The Space of the Secret Conclusion 232 Reference List 238 Abstract This thesis takes up J. G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model. I discuss ten DeLillo novels and one play – Americana, Players, The Names, White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, the play Valparaiso, The Body Artist, Cosmopolis, and the pseudonymous Amazons – that feature adultery narratives. -
Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin
Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin Rogers WORLD PREMIERE U.S. DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 Running Time: 90 minutes | Language: English SYNOPSIS Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT About two years ago, I sat down with Gil Friesen, a longtime music industry veteran from A&M Records, whom I only knew by reputation. He told me he wanted to make a film about backup singers. He didn’t know what the film was going to be, but he knew there was something intriguing in there. -
Whether You're Dark Or You're Fair
“Whether You’re Dark or You’re Fair”: The Black Female Body in A Different World and School Daze By Inda Lauryn Note: This piece was written sometime between 2003 and 2006 during my graduate school years. It was never published. Introduction Although the primary purpose of comedy is to make us laugh, it also at times serves as a vehicle to address or comment upon societal issues. Historically, film and television executives have assumed that audiences would not be receptive to socially-conscious programming, particularly programming that comes with an African-American face. For instance, Herman Gray (1995) argues that blackness and blacks “served to amuse and comfort culturally sanctioned notions of whiteness, especially white superiority and paternalism (p. 75),” implying that African Americans exist in a very limited capacity within the television world. Interestingly, African Americans have mostly been relegated to the realm of comedy (and musical performance) in their film and television representations. As a result, not only have these representations carried a significant amount of weight within the overall scheme of African- American images, but they have also led African Americans to seek more creative ways in which to use comedy for purposes other than laughter. Quite possibly the success of Norman Lear’s situation comedies from the 1970s and the success of blaxploitation cinema of that same era forced executives to realize that there was a viable black audience willing not only to laugh at itself but also willing to examine the social conditions surrounding them. Yet, at the heart of these representations lie the legacies of the tom, the buck, the coon, the tragic mulatto, the mammy, Sambo and Sapphire, as scholars such as Donald Bogle (1994) have documented.
