“The Voice of the Voiceless” News Production and Journalistic Practice at Al Jazeera English
STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY Department of Social Anthropology “The Voice of the Voiceless” News production and journalistic practice at Al Jazeera English Emma Nyrén i Master’s thesis Spring 2014 Supervisor: Paula Uimonen Abstract This thesis explores how the cultural and social media environments surrounding the journalism of Al Jazeera English are shaped by and shape the channel’s news practices. Al Jazeera English has been described as a contra-flow news organization in the global media landscape and this thesis discusses the different reasons why the channel is described in this way by looking at its origins, aims, characteristics and ideals. Based on interviews with Al Jazeera English journalists, news observations and two field observations in London, I argue that Al Jazeera English brings cultural and social sensitivity to its news reports by engaging with multiple in-depth perspectives, using local reporters and integrating citizen generated material. The channel’s early adoption of online technologies and citizen journalism also contributes to a more democratic news direction and gives the channel a wider spectrum of opinions and perspectives to choose between. By applying a comparative analysis built on similar studies within anthropology of news journalism differences and similarities within the journalistic practices can be detected, comparing Al Jazeera English’s journalism with journalism at other places and news organizations. These comparisons and discussions enables new understandings for how news is produced and negotiated within the global media landscape, and this gives the global citizen an improved comprehension of why the news, which shapes our appreciation of the world, looks like it does. -

Ford Presidential Library White House Communications Agency (WHCA): Videotapes of Public Affairs, News, and Other Television Broadcasts, 1973-77 WHCA selectively created, or acquired, videorecordings of news and public affairs broadcasts from the national networks CBS, NBC, and ABC; the public broadcast station WETA in Washington, DC; and various local station affiliates. Program examples include: news special reports, national presidential addresses and press conferences, local presidential events, guest interviews of administration officials, appearances of Ford family members, and the 1976 Republican Convention and Ford-Carter debates. In addition, WHCA created weekly compilation tapes of selected stories from network evening news programs. Click here for more details about the contents of the "Weekly News Summary" tapes All WHCA videorecordings are listed in the table below according to approximate original broadcast date. The last entries, however, are for compilation tapes of selected television appearances by Mrs. Ford, 1974-76. The tables are based on WHCA’s daily logs. “Tape Length” refers to the total recording time available, not actual broadcast duration. Building on the increasing international recognition of Seven’s created and produced My Kitchen Rules, the company today confirmed that FOX Broadcasting Company (FOX), one of the “big four” television networks in the United States has signed Seven to create and produce My Kitchen Rules for the United States. INC. The Walt Disney Company and its indirect wholly owned subsidiary ABC, Inc. submit these reply comments in response to the comments of the Children's Media Policy Coalition ("CMPC") in the above-referenced proceeding. ABC, Inc., directly and through subsidiary companies, owns and operates the ABC Television Network as well as ten broadcast television stations across the country. The ABC Television Network currently provides its owned and affiliated stations with a four-hour weekly Saturday moming block of children's programs called ABC Kids, three hours of which it designates "core" educational and informational ("Ell") programming. In its comments CMPC requests dramatic changes in the definition of Ell programming and in rules regarding acceptable scheduling and promotion ofsuch programs. It asks that the Commission's longstanding rules, which wisely define E/I programming as programming that addresses either the social/emotional or the cognitive/intellectual needs ofchildren, be changed to require that every broadcaster provide some programming that teaches academic skills such as reading, writing or arithmetic. It also asks that the rule permitting educational and informational "core" programming to air any day of the week between 7 AM and 10 PM be revised to require that every broadcaster schedule some of its core programming for weekdays rather than weekends. This departure from longstanding Commission rules is unwarranted. The existing rules appropriately recognize the value of pro-social as well as academic programming and weekend as well as weekday programming. -
