In policy-making, the cultural economy is commonly framed from an economic perspective that salutes the role of the cultural economy and the dynamics of entrepreneurship in processes of urban and regional developments. Moreover, explorations of cultural economy and entrepreneurship are mainly represented by studies of Europe and North America. This thesis departs from such a normative perspective, and critically examines the links between a situated music economy, its cultural entrepreneurs and social change in West Africa. -

Distribué fin 1979 en France par la maison de disque Vogue, le 45 tours Rappers’ Delight du groupe Sugarhill Gang devient un tube de discothèque vendu à près de 600 000 exemplaires. Puis, dès 1982, une poignée de Français résidant à New York dont le journaliste et producteur de disques Bernard Zekri initie la première tournée hip hop en France, le New York City Rap Tour et invite le Rocksteady Crew, Grandmaster DST et Afrika Bambaataa pour une série de performances à Paris, Londres, mais aussi Lyon, Strasbourg et Mulhouse. Enfin, en 1984, le musicien, DJ et animateur radio Sidney lance l’émission hebdomadaire « H.I.P. H.O.P. » sur la première chaîne de télévision du pays. Pendant un an, il fait découvrir les danses hip hop et les musiques qui les accompagnent à un public plus large encore, et massivement composé d’enfants et d’adolescents. -

1 - Présentation Dossier d’accompagnement de la conférence / concert du vendredi 6 février 2009 proposée dans le cadre du projet d’éducation artistique des Trans et des Champs Libres. “Les musiques africaines” Conférence de Jérôme Rousseaux Concert de Smod Du Sahel au Mali, de l'Éthiopie au Soudan, du Congo à l'Afrique du Sud et avec certaines esthétiques satellites qui sont issues du Maghreb et des îles de l'Océan Indien, les musiques africaines forment un gigantesque puzzle qui est le reflet sonore d'un continent multiple et multiculturel, aussi riche et complexe certainement que l'Europe ou l'Asie. Au cours de cette conférence et en utilisant de nombreux exemples, nous examinerons cette grande diversité et nous aborderons quelques questions fondamentales comme celui du regard occidental qui est parfois proche d'un certain néo-colonialisme, la différence entre la notion d'ethnomusi- cologie et de world music dont le continent africain a été dans les deux cas l'un des terrains de base, la place de la musique dans la société comme l'une des composantes de la vie plutôt qu'un art comme nous l'entendons habituellement, et leperpétuel balancement de beaucoup de ces musiques entre la tradition et la modernité. Enfin, nous montrerons l'aspect matriciel des musiques d'Afrique noire, et l'importance qu'elles ont dans ce que l'on appelle désormais les "musiques actuelles". Nous ferons ressortir leur parenté avec le blues, leur rôle dans l'évolution du jazz, dans le renouveau du rap, et l'influence des rythmes comme l'afrobeat dans toutes les musiques qui se réclament du groove et de la transe. -

Mbalax: Cosmopolitanism in Senegalese Urban Popular Music Timothy Roark Mangin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Timothy Roark Mangin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Mbalax: Cosmopolitanism in Senegalese Urban Popular Music Timothy Roark Mangin This dissertation is an ethnographic and historical examination of Senegalese modern identity and cosmopolitanism through urban dance music. My central argument is that local popular culture thrives not in spite of transnational influences and processes, but as a result of a Senegalese cosmopolitanism that has long valued the borrowing and integration of foreign ideas, cultural practices, and material culture into local lifeways. My research focuses on the articulation of cosmopolitanism through mbalax, an urban dance music distinct to Senegal and valued by musicians and fans for its ability to shape, produce, re-produce, and articulate overlapping ideas of their ethnic, racial, generational, gendered, religious, and national identities. Specifically, I concentrate on the practice of black, Muslim, and Wolof identities that Senegalese urban dance music articulates most consistently. The majority of my fieldwork was carried out in the nightclubs and neighborhoods in Dakar, the capital city. I performed with different mbalax groups and witnessed how the practices of Wolofness, blackness, and Sufism layered and intersected to articulate a modern Senegalese identity, or Senegaleseness. This ethnographic work was complimented by research in recording studios, television studios, radio stations, and research institutions throughout Senegal. The dissertation begins with an historical inquiry into the foundations of Senegalese cosmopolitanism from precolonial Senegambia and the spread of Wolof hegemony, to colonial Dakar and the rise of a distinctive urban Senegalese identity that set the proximate conditions for the postcolonial cultural policy of Négritude and mbalax. -

Martin Verbeke March 2016 Rappers and Linguistic Variation A study of non-standard language in selected francophone rap tracks University of Stirling Doctoral thesis Academic years 2011-2016 1 Abstract This thesis examines the use of non-standard language, more specifically non-standard vocabulary (i.e. slang, verlan, colloquialisms, vulgarities, foreign borrowings, and abbreviations), in a corpus of selected francophone rap tracks in order both to quantify its use and to investigate what determines its variation, focusing on the impact of diachronic, diatopic, gender and diaphasic determinants. The methodology relies on a lexicographic analysis to produce quantitative results which are then analysed qualitatively by means of extract analyses and semi-structured interviews with francophone rappers. To answer the research questions, the thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the aforementioned methodology and the overall quantitative results from the thesis, while also introducing the notion of variation, which is then tackled in the last four chapters. The second chapter investigates diachronic determinants from two perspectives: different generations of rappers (1990/1991, 2001 and 2011) and one artist throughout his career (Akhenaton in 1991, 2011 and 2011). The third chapter looks at diatopic determinants, analysing the impact of ethnic and spatial origins. Three ethnic origins are compared (rappers of French, Algerian and Senegalese origin), together with three cities (Marseille, Paris and Brussels) and three departments (Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne). The fourth chapter focuses on gender determinants, with a comparison of male versus female rappers that also takes broader gender performativity into account. Finally, the fifth chapter examines the impact of diaphasic determinants.
