A review of existing train power supply – and future transport needs along the Sunbury Line – showed that we needed more power in the area. So we’re building a new substation on St Albans Road.
The existing substation south of Ginifer train station on St Albans Road will be replaced. The new substation will be built in a reserve next to the rail corridor and north of the Western Ring Road. Substations are an integral part of Melbourne’s train network. A substation is a mostly self-contained, unstaffed building containing electrical equipment that converts the local power supply into the voltage and type of current needed to operate trains, signals and communication equipment across the train network.
