  • JOSH JENSEN Founder – Calera
JOSH JENSEN Founder – Calera In the world of fine wine, Josh Jensen is a legend. An innovator and a pioneer, Josh has been named the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Winemaker of the Year,” honored as a “Rockstar of Wine” at World of Pinot Noir, and has graced the cover of Wine Spectator. More than just being universally respected by his peers, Josh played a pivotal role in establishing Pinot Noir as one of North America’s great varietal wines. In doing so, he also built Calera into one of the world’s most revered wineries. Beloved by connoisseurs, Calera has been honored by Wine & Spirits as one of the “Top 100 Wineries in the World” four times, with Robert Parker calling Calera “California’s Romanée-Conti.” For those who know Josh’s story, there is a particular aptness in the compassion to Romanée-Conti, In the early 1970s, after studying at Yale and Oxford, Josh was exploring Europe, when a desire to try his hand at vineyard work led him to Romanée-Conti, where he worked harvest. Inspired by his experience at the famed Pinot Noir estate, the following year he deepened his understanding of great Pinot Noir at Domaine Dujac. Returning to the United States, he began a quest to create a style of Pinot Noir that had not previously been realized in the United States. To achieve this goal, he spent the next two years searching for land rich in limestone, like the vineyards he most admired in Burgundy. In 1974, he found what he was looking for on the steep slopes of Mount Harlan, a 3,278-foot peak in the Gavilan Mountains that divide Monterey and San Benito counties.

DOMAINE DUJAC Clos Saint Denis 1970 - 2004 by Neal Martin March 2020 By Neal Martin | March 31, 2020 Walking back from a dinner last year, a friend asked if I was aware of the current market price for mature bottles of Domaine Dujac. “No,” I replied. All I knew was that they are beyond my budget. He whipped out his smartphone and dug up the price for a 1990 Clos de la Roche. I was gobsmacked – it was a cool £5,000 per bottle. Of course I am inured to the escalation in Burgundy prices in recent years, but even so, I found it staggering how much 750ml of Pinot Noir could cost. Then I remembered a bacchanal in Paris the previous January with a gaggle of high-rolling, wine-loving friends vowing serious damage to Tour d’Argent’s astonishing wine list. Jeremy Seysses joined us for a dinner that ranks among the greatest in my life, one where my already lofty estimation of Dujac went up a few notches. It was not Clos de la Roche that blew my mind but mature vintages of Clos Saint-Denis. I confess to an ardent passion for this vineyard, one shared by a number of winemakers, though it seems to lie unfairly in the shadow of Clos de la Roche within the context of Morey-Saint-Denis. So, when I was invited to a vertical of Dujac’s Clos Saint-Denis in London last April, there was no way I was going to miss it. This vertical tasting was organized by collector Jordi Orriols-Gil and took place at Hide restaurant in central London, with around fifteen Burgundy lovers in attendance.

  • The Full Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Next Generation Winemaking Team Château de Pommard Welcomes New Assistant Winemaker Eric Pignal POMMARD, FRANCE (December 12, 2017), Famille Carabello-Baum is excited to announce the newest addition to the team at Château de Pommard, Assistant Winemaker Eric Pignal. A young, yet already veteran member of the wine industry, Pignal brings hands-on experience working with renowned winemakers on three different continents. A native of Normandy, Eric studied mathematics and finance at University of Paris Dauphine and initially worked as a financial analyst. But still, he felt like something was missing. He’d often find himself thinking of his father’s best friend Jean-Pierre de Smet – former winemaker at revered Burgundian estate, Domaine de l’Arlot. Growing up, he and his father frequently visited the domaine and it was there that he not only tasted his very first wine, but also experienced his first harvest as a picker. After several vendanges he realized his true calling was not in finance, but in winemaking. And with that, he quit the world of finance, relocated to Burgundy and studied viticulture and enology through CFPPA (Centre de Formation Professionnelle et de Promotion Agricole) de Beaune. Since then, Pignal has worked with winemakers across the globe, including Littoria Wines on the Sonoma Coast, Rippon Vineyard in New Zealand and Australia-based Henshke Cellars. In Burgundy, he has already become quite the personality having worked for some of the region’s finest names including Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault, Chambolle-Musigny-based Domaine Georges Roumier, Domain Didier Fornerol in Corgoloin and, of course, three vintages at Domaine de l’Arlot.

  • DOMAINE DUJAC Reviews of 2018 Vintage Wines View from the Cellar – John Gilman Nov/Dec 2019 – Issue #84
DOMAINE DUJAC Reviews of 2018 Vintage Wines View From The Cellar – John Gilman Nov/Dec 2019 – Issue #84 eremy Seysses is very happy with how the domaine’s 2018s have turned out, though one gets the sense that Vins Rouges their effortless beauty in the glass belies an awful lot of work that had to go on behind the scenes to make 2018 Morey St. Denis- Domaine Dujac Jsuch beautifully classic wines in the torrid summer of 2018. This has already been racked a couple of weeks ahead of my The team at Domaine Dujac was out picking chardonnay for visit, but seemed to be on good form and was not hard to their white wines on August 26th of 2018 and did not waste handicap. The nose wafts from the glass in a very refined mix any time moving onto pinot noir on the 30th of the month, of plums, black cherries, dark chocolate, a fine base of soil, once the white grapes had been brought in. The last pinot noir vanillin oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is grapes were brought in on September 8th, from the premier pure, full-bdoied, long and nicely transparent, with a good cru vineyard of Malconsorts in Vosne-Romanée. As is core of fruit, suave tannins and a long, poised and vibrant typical in mid-November, the red wines here were in varying finish. This is going to be a very good AC. 2026- stages of evolution at the time of my visit, with the Dujac 2045+. 90+ Fils et Père AC level bottlings already having been assembled in tank and a few of the other wines still down in 2018 Chambolle-Musigny- Domaine Dujac the cellars in barrel also having just been racked, or were due I did not write down whether or not the domaine’s version of for a racking in the near future.
