JOSH JENSEN Founder – Calera In the world of fine wine, Josh Jensen is a legend. An innovator and a pioneer, Josh has been named the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Winemaker of the Year,” honored as a “Rockstar of Wine” at World of Pinot Noir, and has graced the cover of Wine Spectator. More than just being universally respected by his peers, Josh played a pivotal role in establishing Pinot Noir as one of North America’s great varietal wines. In doing so, he also built Calera into one of the world’s most revered wineries. Beloved by connoisseurs, Calera has been honored by Wine & Spirits as one of the “Top 100 Wineries in the World” four times, with Robert Parker calling Calera “California’s Romanée-Conti.” For those who know Josh’s story, there is a particular aptness in the compassion to Romanée-Conti, In the early 1970s, after studying at Yale and Oxford, Josh was exploring Europe, when a desire to try his hand at vineyard work led him to Romanée-Conti, where he worked harvest. Inspired by his experience at the famed Pinot Noir estate, the following year he deepened his understanding of great Pinot Noir at Domaine Dujac. Returning to the United States, he began a quest to create a style of Pinot Noir that had not previously been realized in the United States. To achieve this goal, he spent the next two years searching for land rich in limestone, like the vineyards he most admired in Burgundy. In 1974, he found what he was looking for on the steep slopes of Mount Harlan, a 3,278-foot peak in the Gavilan Mountains that divide Monterey and San Benito counties. -

PRESS REVIEW Vintage 2017 January 2020 Vinous - Stephen Tanzer 2017 CHABLIS Antonio Galloni The 2017 Chablis is a silky, perfumed and open-knit wine with lovely depth to play off the lifted floral aromatics. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper add brilliance to this racy, polished Chablis. 90 The 2017 Chablis Les Lys 1er Cru is powerful, dense and savory with lots of energy. Savory herbs, dried flowers and lemon peel come together in a Chablis that is bright, punchy and full of character. The 2017 is a bit hearty and rough around the edges, but it certainly isn't lacking in depth or intensity. 90 The 2017 Chablis Les Vaillons 1er Cru is resonant and super-expressive. Lemon confit, almond, dried herbs, crushed flowers and mint come together in an attractive, nuanced Chablis that will drink well right out of the gate. The finish dries out just a touch. Otherwise, the 2017 is nicely done. 90 The 2017 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is soft, open-knit and expressive, with no hard edges and plenty of immediacy. Bright citrus and floral character adds lift. There is not a ton of complexity here, but the 2017 makes up for that with its creamy, inviting personality. Hints of orange peel and white flowers linger nicely on the close. 90 The 2017 Chablis Les Vaucopins 1er Cru is bright, precise and lifted. Floral, citrus and spice notes are nicely delineated. There is good energy and resonance here, but ultimately, the Vaucopins feels a bit compact, especially in the mid-palate. 89 The 2017 Chablis Les Blanchots Grand Cru is soft, precise and understated. -

Grapes normally harvested one week later. 2 11/18/2014 Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise The top regional appellation for both red(64%) and white(36%) wine. Approved since the 1990 vintage. Strictly enforced, and 40% of samples are rejected. Best reds: Mercurey and Givry Best whites: Rully and Montagny Burgundy’s top Aligoté: Bouzeron Most prominent sparkler: Rully 3 11/18/2014 Only village appellation in Burgundy for Aligote. In 1979, received Bourgogne Aligote de Bouzeron appellation. In 1998, it was elevated to “Bouzeron”. (100% Aligote) 4 11/18/2014 Use Aligote Dore’ clone, not Aligote Vert. Plant on sloping marl-rich soil with limestone and thin top soil. Goblet train vines to control vigor. Limit yields to 50 hl/ha. DOMAINE DUJAC Clos Saint Denis 1970 - 2004 by Neal Martin March 2020 By Neal Martin | March 31, 2020 Walking back from a dinner last year, a friend asked if I was aware of the current market price for mature bottles of Domaine Dujac. “No,” I replied. All I knew was that they are beyond my budget. He whipped out his smartphone and dug up the price for a 1990 Clos de la Roche. I was gobsmacked – it was a cool £5,000 per bottle. Of course I am inured to the escalation in Burgundy prices in recent years, but even so, I found it staggering how much 750ml of Pinot Noir could cost. Then I remembered a bacchanal in Paris the previous January with a gaggle of high-rolling, wine-loving friends vowing serious damage to Tour d’Argent’s astonishing wine list. Jeremy Seysses joined us for a dinner that ranks among the greatest in my life, one where my already lofty estimation of Dujac went up a few notches. It was not Clos de la Roche that blew my mind but mature vintages of Clos Saint-Denis. I confess to an ardent passion for this vineyard, one shared by a number of winemakers, though it seems to lie unfairly in the shadow of Clos de la Roche within the context of Morey-Saint-Denis. So, when I was invited to a vertical of Dujac’s Clos Saint-Denis in London last April, there was no way I was going to miss it. This vertical tasting was organized by collector Jordi Orriols-Gil and took place at Hide restaurant in central London, with around fifteen Burgundy lovers in attendance. -

MAISON PASCAL CLEMENT GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN “LES EVOCELLES” 2015 PASCAL CLEMENT || Pascal Clement was born in the village of Savigny-les-Beaune to a family of growers, where his father founded the Maison in 1950. After over 20 years as a grower and winemaker in the region – including his time at legendary Domaine Coche-Dury in Meursault - he launched his own micro-négoçiant project in 2012. The wines live in a stunning building built in 1850 with a splendid arched cellar, housing 200 barrels. Pascal works with fifteen farmers / vineyard owners with vineyard holdings across Burgundy, personally selecting and tending the plots he chooses to work with. Pascal’s winemaking philosophy is very non-interventional. All the wines are fermented with native yeasts and undergo malolactic naturally (depending on vintage). In 2016, a “salty” year, the whites all completed malo while in 2015, Pascal chose to halt malolactic. The wines rest in barrel with no lees stirring/ bâtonnage. For reds, Pascal prefers Rousseau barrels and whites are in Damy, Billon, and François Frères. Recently, Pascal started moving to larger 500L casks for aging, finding better balance of wood to wine compared to the 225L Burgundy barrels he had been using. GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN “LES EVOCELLES” 2015 || BLEND | 100% Pinot Noir VINEYARDS | Les Evocelles is located high up the hill at the northwesterly-most point in Gevrey-Chambertin, surrounded by Premier Cru vineyards (Champeaux and Combe aux Moines). Some speculate it was overlooked for classification due to its elevation at 400 meters. Vines face south/southeast on shallow calcerous soils. WINEMAKING | Aged 18 months in French oak. -
