Ethics for Digital Journalists
ETHICS FOR DIGITAL JOURNALISTS The rapid growth of online media has led to new complications in journalism ethics and practice. While traditional ethical principles may not fundamentally change when information is disseminated online, applying them across platforms has become more challenging as new kinds of interactions develop between jour- nalists and audiences. In Ethics for Digital Journalists , Lawrie Zion and David Craig draw together the international expertise and experience of journalists and scholars who have all been part of the process of shaping best practices in digital journalism. Drawing on contemporary events and controversies like the Boston Marathon bombing and the Arab Spring, the authors examine emerging best practices in everything from transparency and verifi cation to aggregation, collaboration, live blogging, tweet- ing, and the challenges of digital narratives. These advances have challenged traditional media organizations to adapt the way they deliver content to stay relevant to readers, fulfill their missions, and sustain their work. In 2006, the Knight Foundation launched the Knight News Challenge (KNC) to invest in new ideas and individuals to support innovation in news and information. Since its launch, the KNC has provided more than $48 million to fund 139 projects in the United States and around the world. 3 / 31 To better understand how the Challenge impacted winners1 , their projects, and the broader fields of news, media, and journalism, Arabella Advisors conducted a retrospective evaluation of the last 10 years of the KNC (2006– 2016)2. Through this research, we identified ways the Challenge has impacted the field and its winners, including: Enabling and Advancing Innovators in Journalism and the Media The KNC helped to support a group of individuals and organizations working at the nexus of technology and journalism and, in large part, has kept those individuals within the media field. Of all winners, 84 percent remain in the fields of journalism, technology and, media. -

MIT 2002 The State of Multimedia Newsrooms in Europe Martha Stone, Jan Bierhoff Introduction The media landscape worldwide is changing rapidly. In the 1980s, the “traditional” mass media players were in control: TV, newspapers and radio. Newspaper readers consumed the paper at a specified time of the day, in the morning, over breakfast or after work. Radio was listened to on the way to and from work. Television news was watched in the morning mid-day and/or evening. Fast forward to 2002, and the media landscape is fragmented. The consumption of news has changed dramatically. News information is all around, on mobile phones, newspapers, PDAs, TV, Interactive TV, cable, Internet, teletext, kiosks, radio, video screens in hotel elevators, video programming for airlines and much more. Meanwhile, also the concept of news has changed to be more personalised, more service-oriented and less institutional. The sweeping market changes have forced media companies to adapt. This new challenge explains why Dow Jones Company, owner of the Wall Street Journal, now considers itself “a news provider of any news, all the time, everywhere.” In the frame of the MUDIA project (see annex 1), an international team of researchers has taken stock of the present situation concerning media and newsroom convergence in Europe. The various routes taken to this ideal have been mapped in a number of case studies. In total 24 leading European media (newspapers, broadcasters, netnative newscasters) were approached with a comprehensive questionnaire and later visited to interview key representatives of the editorial and commercial departments (see annex 2). The study zoomed in on four countries: the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Sweden; viewpoints from other media elsewhere in Europe were added on the basis of existing literature, and throughout the study a comparison with the USA is made where possible and relevant. -

Wildlife items were characterised by public awareness (51%), columnist contributions (46%), and local spatiality (43%). Most items (82%) were allocated space of less than half a page. Results highlighted the minimal number and small space devoted to wildlife news items in Iranian newspapers. Abstract: Human response to wildlife management is widespread, encompassing both human– wildlife conflicts and wildlife conservation, in different places and at different times. As people become increasingly aware of the importance of wildlife to biological and environmental sustainabil- ity, newspapers can be important sources of information, especially in developing countries, such as Iran. Three major Iranian daily newspapers were analysed for news items related to wildlife. Over the 7-year study period, 434 articles presented environmental news, of which 61 items referred to wildlife. Each wildlife item was recorded in terms of message, contributor, spatiality, and allocated space. Structure query language (SQL) was used to analyse relationships between the 915 fields/entries. However, research on news sharing in this particular media environment is lacking. Based on the virality of sixteen partisan outlets’ coverage of immigration and using the latest computational linguistic algorithm, the present study probes how hyper- partisan news sharing is related to source transparency, content styles, and moral framing. The study finds that the most shared articles reveal author names, but not necessarily other types of author information. The study uncovers a salient link between moral frames and virality. In particular, audiences are more sensitive to moral frames that emphasize authority/respect, fairness/reciprocity, and harm/care. The Argument That Too Little Science Is Available in News Media Is Certainly
JOURNALISTS NEED TO KNOW HOW TO WRITE ABOUT SCIENCE – AND WE CAN TEACH THEM By Steve McIlwaine Introduction Australian journalists need to write and broadcast more about science. The view that too little science is available in news media, a constant complaint of the science lobby, is certainly supported by public opinion. Surveys in Australia have mirrored those in Britain and the US in showing repeatedly and overwhelmingly that news audiences want to hear and see more about science in their media and that they consistently rate science as more desirable than politics or sport (Metcalfe and Gascoigne 1995; Lowe 1997). Clearly, it is in the interests of journalism and news organisations to tap this underexploited resource. But journalists appear to avoid science topics and are largely unequipped to handle medical science, environmental science, or any science, in ways that do not distort, misrepresent or misunderstand the science and that do not promote a continuing feud with scientists. Journalism and journalism education are unlikely, for their own good reasons of scepticism, to adopt the broadly uncritical acceptance of the promotion of science communication as a “motherhood statement”. Journalism should – and increasingly does – see science as an important area of human activity that has no inherent precedence over other important activities. But journalism and journalism education can obviously not ignore the fact that science is playing an ever-greater role in the everyday life and concerns of news audiences. Just as journalists have seen it as their responsibility to present information and interpretation in such fields as politics, economics and the legal system, so they are becoming increasingly less able to avoid responsibility for informing about and interpreting science in its manifold forms.
