With 140 years of successful operations DNV has developed into one of the leading international classification societies and a major player in the field of risk management. DNV’s prime resource, its employees, consists of 6000 persons of 80 nationalities, half of them with academic degrees, working in about 100 countries. Already 50 years ago DNV started investing in systematic R&D which has brought DNV to the forefront in many areas and helped DNV develop its services and find solutions to solve customer problems. 2004 marked the passage of 100 million GRT classified by DNV and brought more than 20 % of all newbuildings ordered world wide to DNV. In Finland DNV has long traditions and a well established position and today DNV has the lion’s share of the ships being constructed at the three major yards. Many of them like the newly delivered‘“Birka Paradise” have additional class notations like CLEAN DESIGN and COMFORT and the highest ice class.

“2005 will be the most important year for the European shipbuilding industry project InterSHIP, which has been underway for a year now. We have set ambitious goals and our hard work will be soon be paying off and showing results,” says managing director Kari Airaksinen from the InterSHIP project.

InterSHIP represents improve- ments to the technical and eco- ” nomical aspects of the shipbuild- ing industry. The project tackles the whole life cycle of ships and the goal is to gain significant reductions in build- ing and development costs. The project also wants to introduce innovative solutions to the markets more speedily.” InterSHIP wants to strengthen the competitive advantage of shipbuilders in EU countries by improving and integrating tools and methods used in designing and imple- menting very challenging, unique vessels. The goal is to develop new production tech- nology based on robotics and new IT ap- plications, such as mobile information tech- nology and knowledge and quality manage- ment.
