Dear Parents, National Catholic Schools Week is such a beautiful celebration. It was wonderful to see so many of you at our all system Mass and have the opportunity to pray together. Our Catholic school community is a very special group of people, and God has blessed us in so many ways. Thank you for your commitment to Catholic education and for all you do for our students, faculty, and staff. It is with great anticipation that we begin the registration process for our 2014-15 school year. Current families are asked to register their returning students beginning Monday, February 3rd. As you know, we have moved to online registration, and we hope you will find this to be convenient. Packets are available in the main offices if you prefer to complete one by hand. Please take the time to register your students as soon as possible, as we will be enrolling new families beginning February 18th. With the increase in enrollment we have experienced this year, we want to make sure all of our returning students are registered in a timely manner. We do anticipate some classes filling for the next year, with the possibility of waiting lists being established. Timely enrollment also helps us as we plan staffing for the upcoming year. Changes to Tuition Assistance Policy I am pleased to inform you that the amount of tuition assistance budgeted for the 2014-15 school year is $160,000, which reflects an increase of $40,000. Strong enrollment, major gifts and endowment funds have helped make this possible, and we are happy to be able to share our blessings with you by making more assistance available. It is important to note this change in policy: THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE ROUND OF ASSISTANCE AWARDED THIS YEAR AND THAT AWARD WILL BE BASED ON THE PERCENTAGE OF NEED CALCULATED BY TUITION AID DATA SERVICES (TADS). There will be NO follow-up round as in the past. TADS is a third party vendor used by the school to remove the judgment of school officials from the award process and to maintain confidentiality of the financial information provided by families. The application deadline is April 30th. Please be advised that it can take several weeks for the TADS application to make it through the audit process. After your initial submission, TADS will notify you of any additional documentation required to complete the process. Policy states an April 30th deadline, but we recommend all applications to TADS be submitted by March 31st in order to meet our required deadline of April 30th. Applications must receive a good or fair status with TADS to be considered for assistance. Please call the RCCSS Business Office if you have any questions at all regarding tuition assistance. Developing Healthy Self-Esteem

The MS During the 2nd semester, we have an important part of the middle school curriculum that focuses on developing healthy self-esteem through our virtue formation programs. The Catholic Church recognizes you as the primary and best source of information and inspiration for your child as they grow and develop. Christian sexuality concerns the way a person expresses him/herself through love, friendship and community with others as part of growing closer to God’s plan and vision for us. Having discussions with your child about the moral values inherent with Catholic teaching on love, sexual intimacy, and the beauty of the human person in the light of faith can be difficult. We ask you to take an active role in being familiar with the curriculum so that you can have wonderful discussions with your child that reflect your belief system. This will help in the formation of your child’s self-esteem and establish a respect for who God wants them to be. French students celebrated Epiphany with the traditional French "galette des rois," or Kings Cake. A small figurine is hidden in each cake and the person who finds it in his or her piece of cake is crowned king or queen for the day. In France these special cakes show up in all of the bakeries for Epiphany and the tradition is to continue to buy and eat the cakes throughout the month of January.

Febrrrrrruary Fine Arts News We are off and running with 2nd semester! So much to do – so little time! We have already attended the South Dakota Jazz Festival at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Excellent workshops for our students and an amazing evening concert made it a very educational and rewarding day for our jazz singers and instrumentalists. We are getting ready for Region 8 Solo and Ensemble contest taking place on February 12 at the Civic Center in Rapid City. We are taking soloists, duets, ensembles and more. Parents are welcome to attend this day of great music making by our students and many more from the Black Hills Region 8 area. In addition, our cast and crew of the One Act Play has been rehearsing since before Christmas. Under the direction of Susan Oleson, we take “Kaleidoscope” by Ray Bradbury to Regionals on Wednesday, January 29th in Hill City. They gave an excellent performance for family and friends here at the STM MS gym on Saturday, January 25th. Go Cavs! Congratulations to Megan Stone and Josiah Hanson, who auditioned and made it into the South Dakota Junior Honors Choir! They have been working on music for this event since before Christmas as well, and spent a day and a half with top 7th through 9th grade singers from all over the state, finishing with a fantastic concert here in Rapid City at the Performing Arts Center downtown. VFW Voices of Democracy Speech Contest

The theme for 2013-2014 was: “Why I'm Optimistic About our Nation’s Future” Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate each year. This year, the local VFW received over 400 entries from dozens of high schools. The top 3 winners were: St. Thomas More sophomores, PJ Freidel, Kennedy Kirsch and Ciara Duffy. Ciara Duffy was the District winner and will compete in Pierre on February 3-4, 2014. The state winner goes on to National Competition in Washington DC. Winner of the Preorder National Competition receives a $30,000 college scholarship. Each student painted a 9" x 12" canvas and SAVE! panel. When the panels were set side by side the complete painting was a replica of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. Modeling paste was used to create the rich texture on the panels first. Then, they were painted with acrylic paint. Black Hills Electric Cooperative’s $1,000 scholarship is open to all dependents of members/owners of Black Hills Electric Cooperative and must be returned to the cooperative’s office by February 3. The MS Robotics Afterschool Team & MS Robotics class both traveled to Sioux Falls January 17th to compete at the State FLL Robotics Competition. The team’s registration, travel, and lodging expenses were covered by Caterpillar. Robotics is a Middle School enrichment course for 6th—8th graders. Mr. Tom Merkwan is the instructor. The Afterschool team took home the Lego trophy for “Mechanical Design”.

Here is what Katherine Achbach had to say about the class: “Throughout robotics class this MS Robotics Class: Patrick Kellar, Ryan Eilers, Mr. Merkwan, Katherine Achbach, Jacob Fisher, Liam Maguire, Frank year, I learned new things and Veldhuisen strengthened my knowledge on what I already know.

During the semester I was put in charge of making the team’s presentation. The topic was blizzards. I gathered all my information and then started on the power points.

Before working on my presentation, I was introduced to the programming of Lego Mindstrom robots. ...I was introduced to the basics such as going straight and turning. I also worked a little with the building of the robots. It was a very good exercise to following directions.” The teams worked together to solve a problem based on the theme “Nature’s Fury”. The Afterschool team built an earthquake proof building and were judged on many criteria. All the students enjoyed the weekend competition. Camel Classic – January 24th and 25th
