Usefulness of Palynomorphological Characteristics for the Identification of Species Cyanus Mill
Turkish Journal of Botany Turk J Bot (2021) 45: 43-58 http://journals.tubitak.gov.tr/botany/ © TÜBİTAK Research Article doi:10.3906/bot-2005-55 Usefulness of palynomorphological characteristics for the identification of species Cyanus Mill. (Asteraceae) in Turkey: a taxonomic approach Burcu YILMAZ ÇITAK*, Emrah ŞİRİN, Hüseyin DURAL, Kuddisi ERTUĞRUL Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Selçuk University, Konya, Türkiye Received: 24.05.2020 Accepted/Published Online: 03.01.2021 Final Version: 27.01.2021 Abstract: Palynological characters of 20 taxa belonging to the Turkish subgenus Cyanus were studied in details using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of the subgenus Cyanus were tricolporate or syncolporate, subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, 26.15 to 53 µm in polar size, 22.84 to 46.86 µm in equatorial size, isopolar, and radially symmetrical. The only type of pollen grain ornamentation observed was scabrate-perforate. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to investigate the relationships of the studied Cyanus taxa. As a result of the phenetic analyses, the polar axis, equatorial axis, colpus length, and apocolpium were found to be significant palynomorphological characteristics for taxonomic use. Key words: Compositae, Cyanus, pollen morphology, numerical analysis, systematics 1. Introduction Distribution of the Cyanus group lies across central The family Asteraceae is the largest and the most and southern Europe, North Africa, Anatolia, and the cosmopolitan of the flowering plants and is presumably Caucasus. Moreover, some species occur in areas of Iran the most widespread in the Mediterranean (Attard and and Afghanistan (Boršić et al., 2011). Within the scope of Cuschieri, 2009). -

E-mail [email protected] 1 • Background and Aims The geographic distribution of the genus Plectocephalus comprises a single species in Ethiopia, two in North America and possibly four more in South America, in a striking disjunction that is exceptional for genera of the tribe Cardueae. The enormity of this disjunction cast doubts on the precise taxonomic delineation of the genus, which is not unanimously recognized as a natural entity. Our aims were to define the generic boundaries of Plectocephalus and to formulate a hypothesis that would explain its natural range. • Methods A combined molecular approach, using nuclear ITS and ETS and plastid trnL-trnL-F, rpl32-trnLUAG and ndhF markers, was chosen for phylogenetic reconstruction by maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. • Key Results Phylogenetic analysis shows that Plectocephalus is a natural genus that includes the African species P. varians, together with all the native South American species, currently classified as Centaurea, C. cachinalensis, C. floccosa and C. tweediei. The recognition of Centaurodendron as an independent genus, which we consider appropriate, would make Plectocephalus paraphyletic. -

Okay* and K. Demir 1Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Ankara University, 06110 Ankara-Turkey. Accepted 9 August, 2010 Centaurea tchihatcheffii Fisch. and Mey., is a critically endangered endemic species, which grows on limited area around Golbasi district of Ankara province. It has attractive pink, red, purple flowers, the colours of which change with maturation. It has a high potential as out door ornamental plant and as cut flower. Its natural habitat is continuously on decrease because of uncontrolled plucking, intense construction activities and urbanization. The most important reason why the generation of the species is endangered is strong anthropogenic pressure. Therefore, the protection of this plant is of great importance. Study of propagation possibilities for the protection of this species, is of primary importance. This paper reviews C. tchihatcheffii, propagation studies. Key words: Critically endangered endemic (CR), propagation, Centaurea tchihatcheffii Fisch. and Mey. INTRODUCTION The floristic richness and diversity of a country gains extinction. Turkish laws ban trade in critically endangered importance with its number of rare and endemic „critically species, however, due to loopholes in the law, the flowers endangered (CR)‟ plant species (Ekim et al., 2000; IUCN, of C. tchihatcheffi are collected for illegal use in cut flower 2001; Vural, 2006). The greatest species richness of Cardueae occurs in the Mediterranean region where it forms an important element of its fl ora. New fossil evidence and a nearly resolved phylogeny of Cardueae are used here to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of this group. • Methods: We performed maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic inference based on nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA markers. Divergence times and ancestral area reconstructions for main lineages were estimated using penal- ized likelihood and dispersal–vicariance analyses, respectively, and integrated over the posterior distribution of the phylogeny from the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to accommodate uncertainty in phylogenetic relationships. -

Özellikle Centaurea depressa türünün taksonomik konumu tartışmalı olup bazı araştırmacılar tarafından Cyanus cinsinde olması gerektiği iddia edilmiştir. Bu problemi açığa kavuşturmak için, cinse ait beş türün (C. depressa, C. iberica, C. solstitialis, C. virgata, C. balsamita) filogenetik ilişkileri kloroplast DNA’sında bulunan ve filogenetik çalışmalarda tercih edilen trnT(UGU) - trnL(UAA) IGS, trnL5’- trnL3’ intron ve trnL(UAA) - trnF(GAA) IGS bölgeleri kullanılarak belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Cinse ait bazı türlerin DNA sekansları NCBI veri tabanından alınarak analizlere eklenmiş ve hem C. depressa’nın hem de çalışılan diğer dört türün cins içindeki evrimsel ilişkileri aydınlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. Maksimum Olasılık (ML) ve Maksimum Parsimoni (MP) metodlarıyla filogenetik ağaçlar oluşturulmuştur. trnT(UGU) - trnL(UAA) ve trnL5’- trnL3’ intron bölgeleri için oluşturulan ağaçlarda C. depressa -

Cappadocia Wildlife Tour Report 2013
Cappadocia Flowers, Birds & Ancient Sites of Anatolia A Greentours Trip Report 2nd – 12th May 2013 Led by Ian Green & Seda Soylu Day 1 May 2nd to Konya Several of us flew from Manchester, some from London, and there were a number who met up with us in Istanbul. Istanbul Airport is becoming a major transport hub so well are Turkish Airlines doing and so it was very busy through immigration though the queue moved with surprising rapidity given the length of it. Then we were over to the domestic terminal where we all convened at the gate for the flight too Konya. This was pretty much on time and so at ten thirty we landed at Konya's little airport and met Seda and our drivers Samet and Tajittin. They took us into the city centre where we settled into the very pleasant Rumi Hotel which we would discover in the morning was very blue on the outside. Day 2 May 3rd Konya At breakfast we realised we could see directly out onto the famous Mevlana Museum, the turquoise- tiled dome shining in the morning sun. After a great breakfast we headed out to explore one or two of the sites of the city with our local guide Eşe We visited the Mevlâna Museum, originally the Mausoleum of Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Rumi, a Sufi mystic also known as Mevlâna or Rumi. Later we went to the Ince Minare Museum which is the surviving parts of a 13th century Madrasah built by the Anatolian Seljucks. We headed out of town for lunch, into Sille, a little village in the dry hills just to the north of Konya.
