4 5 PROLOGUE

Dear Collectors of Netsuke,

It is with great pleasure to present to you our latest netsuke catalogue, the second of this year, after a long break from our involvement in the netsuke world. As some of you may know Galerie Zacke was very active in the 1980s-1990s and our archive shows some of the very best netsuke sold during this time, like this example of a magnificent tall dutchman (fig.1), sold for a record of three million Austrian schillings. The archive will be opened again and will be fully searchable next year.

Since those times the netsuke art market has changed and is looking to change even more in the coming years, due to increasingly tighter regulations of the ivory trade. One thing that has not changed though, is the appreciation of netsuke as an important form, that our Galerie, now celebrating its 50th year, enthusiastically shares. Coming back to regulations of the ivory trade, there is no doubt that illegal trade must be undermined, however important historical and cultural artefacts, such as the ivory netsuke in this catalogue should remain legal to distribute amongst collectors around the world. Luckily this is still the case, but is a purposefully painstaking process, that most auction houses will simply not touch. We have gone through the process of importing 50 ivory netsuke from the Sam Felton collection from Florida in the past year. (fig.1 Tall netsuke of a dutchman) (Lot 7 – Japanese zodiac) (Lot 112 – Other animals)

The remaining netsuke in this catalogue come from various private collections, a large part is interestingly from a British collection, and they complement the Sam Felton collection so well, that we have decided not to separate them. Instead we have chosen to present to you a story – a glimpse into the netsuke world. The catalogue starts off with the Japanese zodiac, probably the most popular netsuke motif, where all twelve animals are represented. We then move on through , legends and scenes from daily life to a remarkable selection of other animals in netsuke art. Mythical beasts, and still life netsuke lead up to a very good selection of lacquer inro and sagemono, which should never be missing in a netsuke catalogue, as after all they are the reason we have these miniature masterpieces in the first place.

We hope you will enjoy looking through our catalogue and that it (Fig. 2 Sam Felton collection) will be an addition to your netsuke library, and that this assembly of collections may live on partially in your own collection, but also The Sam Felton collection is noted in the catalogue under the provenance with the CITES permit number, which will certainly prove in its entirety through this publication. invaluable, if any of the netsuke will be re-exported outside of the European Union. When I first handled the netsuke on my visit to Naples, Florida roughly one year ago I was immediately taken aback by the stack of cue cards and invoices that have been precisely recorded by Lukas Zacke Mr. Felton. Each netsuke had a tidily written cue card with photographs and explanation of the signature/depiction including references and publication (fig. 2). Furthermore, the netsuke themselves were not only all very good netsuke, but they told a story. Studying the netsuke and the cue cards, indeed was like reliving the process of collecting myself and could at times provide an intimate insight into the collection. If I would be asked to summarize this collection in a sentence, I would say he had a progressive and modern view on netsuke and was not afraid of signatures, as unfortunately so many of us are. Fifty pieces in this catalogue come from this collection. (Lot 127 – Inro)

There are probably thousands of oxen inscribed Tomotada, varying in quality, however this one is in the very top percentile and certainly by the master himself. The eyes are inlaid with black horn, the hairwork is very fine and the rope that passes through the ring around the nose is minutely carved and reaches around to its back. The ivory has a very good colour and fine patina, especially to the underside which is masterfully carved. Note the expressive skin fold of the neck, which adds a special touch to the composition. The himotoshi on the underside are irregular and well hollowed out, exactly as they should be. Condition: Excellent condition Provenance: Collection of Sam Felton with CITES permit no. 18US59513C/9. Purchased from Denise Ronin in 1978, with letter of appraisal dating this piece to the 20th century

The manner of the reserve and strokes of the kanji in this signature is unusual, especially when compared with other recorded netsuke by this artist. Also, 18th century by Okatori are very much in the manner of Tomotada or Okatomo (Okatori’s older brother and master) and are carved extremely well, but as the tiger was not native to Japan, they are not as naturalistic as this tiger and most other animals carved by Okatori. Therefore, there is a possibility that this netsuke was carved either late in Okatori’s life, or by a student, or by another very good carver in the manner of Okatori. However, none of the above should take away any merit of this excellent work, which going by quality of carving on its own, is without a doubt in the same league of any recorded Okatori netsuke.

Ono no Komachi, one of the great 6 poets of the 9th century, once a beautiful and vibrant woman is depicted here as an old woman seated on a gravepost, her beauty faded and wearing tattered clothes. She is forgotten by the courtly world in which she once shone and is reduced to beg and starve on the side of the road. The netsuke is carved in extraordinary detail, her facial features are particularly expressive – squinted eyes, wrinkles and sharp chin. She is holding a staff and next to her is a basket with fruit she has collected from bypassing travelers. The artist has devoted great attention to her tattered clothes as well as her large hat which has several holes in it. The sensitivity of the depiction is particularly evident in small details like the posture of her feet, which are placed on top of each other. Note the finely expressed grain of the sotoba. 64 65 77 A RARE IVORY NETSUKE OF CHODORYO SENNIN WITH SHISHI Ivory netsuke. Japan, 18th - early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published: Illustrated in ‘Netsuke’, Wolfmar Zacken, Vienna, 1987, no. 81

The bearded sage with a very lively crafted head wearing a defining Chinese robe, is barefoot and his long hair reaches his shoulders. A guardian lion shishi, with a mane made up of spiral curls and a bushy, flaming tail, is seated and nestling up to the sage with its head. The rather tame, playful shishi is snarling at his master, who is visibly amused. The folds of the garment are very finely crafted, and the hands are remarkably sensitive. The himotoshi are found on the sage’s back and through his sleeve.

Chodoryo is the name of the Taoist figure Zhang Daoling (34 – 156) in Japanese, who according to legend, had two of his companions turned into fierce tigers by a demon, but in retaliation he conjured a shishi who chased the tigers away. This netsuke likely depicts this exact scene with a humorous Japanese twist.

Depictions of sennin with shishi are extremely rare in netsuke art and rarely named as Chodoryo. This depiction of Chodoryo is perhaps more easily identifiable as such due to his distinct Chinese robes and the fact he is lacking the typical leaf cloak of sennin. However, his robes are incised with leaves and his high forehead and unusually wide nose are characteristic for the superhuman sennin appearance. In the blend of Chinese-Japanese iconography, thus the Chodoryo sennin was born.

The king of hell tasked him with hunting and capturing all – granting him the title of king of ghosts. He then appeared in the dream of the sick emperor Xuanzong and extinguished the ghost who had been causing his illness. Shoki reappeared in Japan around the 12th century and was painted by many great artists throughout the centuries and was a very popular theme for netsuke art, where he is often depicted as a perpetually unsuccessful demon hunter.
