This has been central to my work and life since 1972-when I flrst went to work at the National Welfare Rights Organization and then to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; and today it is in full flower in the work of the Center for Women Policy Studies. In all of these years, I have shared with many other feminists the mission to speak out about racism-plus-sexism as having a unique quality of oppression for women of color. We have talked about the importance of "doing our homework" about other sisters' origins, cul- tures, and histories. We have encouraged white feminists to be outspo- ken against racism and not to leave that task solely to women of color. We have insisted on our responsibility to root out the vestiges of racism in ourselves, in our organizations, and in our feminist theory and policy priorities. 1 “BECOMING JAPANESE:” IDENTITY UNDER JAPANESE OCCUPATION GRADES: 9-12 AUTHOR: Katherine Murphy TOPIC/THEME: Japanese Occupation, World War II, Korean Culture, Identity TIME REQUIRED: Two 60-minute periods BACKGROUND: The lesson is based on the impact of the Japanese occupation of Korea during World War II on Korean culture and identity. In particular, the lesson focuses on the Japanese campaign in 1940 to encourage Koreans to abandon their Korean names and adopt Japanese names. This campaign was known as “sōshi-kaimei." The purpose of this campaign, along with campaigns requiring Koreans to recite an oath to the Japanese Emperor and bow at Shinto shrines, were to make the Korean people “Japanese” and hopefully, loyal subjects of the Japanese Empire by abandoning their Korean identity and loyalties. These cultural policies and campaigns were key to the Japanese war effort during World War II. The lesson draws from the students’ lives as well as two books: Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim and Under the Black Umbrella: Voices from Colonial Korea 1910-1945 by Hildi Kang. CURRICULUM CONNECTION: The lesson is intended to use the major themes from the summer reading book Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood to introduce students to one of the five essential questions of the World History II course: How is identity constructed? How does identity impact human experience? In first investigating the origin of their own names and the meaning of Korean names, students can begin to explore the question “How is identity constructed?’ In examining how and why the Japanese sought to change the Korean people’s names, religion, etc during World War II, students will understand how global events such as World War II can impact an individual. -

During the early days of the regime, many observers commented that all would not be smooth sailing for the new regime, citing the lack of power and previ- ous experience of the youthful Kim Jong-un as a primary cause of concern. However, on the surface at least, it now appears that Kim Jong-un is now in full control of his powers as the “Guiding Leader” and that the political situation is calm. The crucial issue is whether the present situation is stable and sustain- able. To consider this issue properly, it is important to understand the following series of questions. What is the current political structure in North Korea? Is the political structure the same as that which existed under the Kim Jong-il regime, or have significant changes occurred? What political dynamics are at play within this structure? Answering these questions with any degree of accuracy is not an easy task. -

7 BOOK REVIEWS 107 Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms, Seoul: Jimoondang, 2006. The first compilation of beliefs of ancient and medieval Korea, Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms (Samgukyusa) contains the seeds of what we refer to these days as Korean culture. Dealing with mythology, legends, anecdotes, Buddhist and Shamanistic beliefs, history, geography, archeology, architecture, and the arts, this book does not only stand for an account of ancient and medieval Korea on Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla Kingdoms, but it also explains through understanding its origins, its transition to modernity. The author of this book is Ilyeon (1206-1289),1 a Buddhist monk who compiled materials related to the foundation of various Korean kingdoms, the lives of famous monarchs and Buddhist monks. Moreover, mythic and epical space and time cannot exist without such characters, as well. These characters have individual, only or mainly their own distinctive features (name, motifs and elements of biographies, etc.), movements and entertainments, on one hand, and typical features with characteristic nature, on the other hand. The latter point allows us to treat such a character as a special phenomenon of mythic and epical verbal art. both, individual and group (typical), are equally important and interconditioned, because an individual principle to great extent is a definite artistic realization of a group, or typical principle. Another point: one can assume typical principle to have some deviations, and therefore, to signify a progress, a motion, a creation of a new typical feature. In this article I would like to discover typical features, regulations and rules in the description of mythic, legendary and epical characters in Mongolian, consequently in Buryat and Oirat-Kalmuck, and in Korean myths and epic, as well as to find out individual ethnic features in their realization. Among a great variety of motifs which construct main mythic and epical characters I have chosen a motif of miraculous birth. This motifis connected with the idea of a special predestination, which is inherent to mythic narrative works, as well as to heroic epic and historical legends. -

The term otogi-zoshi (“companion tales”) refers to a genre of more than 400 illustrated stories composed between the fifteenth and early-seventeenth centuries. The term otogi- zoshi was first employed by an eighteenth-century publisher and is suggestive of “nurs- ery rhymes” suitable for children and their care-givers, an association that was perpet- uated by literary historians for much of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, the genre is now achieving wide recognition as a vibrant part of the literature of medieval Japan. Noriko Reider’s Seven Demon Stories from Medieval Japan offers us a nuanced and informative exploration of this particular literary-historical landscape. Each chapter focuses on a single text, telling the tale of a character’s encounter with a demon (oni). The first two stories examine the adventures of the famous warrior Minamoto Yor- imitsu and his band of retainers, as they brave (with no small amount of divine in- tervention) the mountain lair of the “Drunken Demon” Shuten Dōji and track the venomous Earth Spider (tsuchigumo). The third and fourth stories describe the ad- ventures of clever scholars: Minister Kibi (whose historic diplomatic mission to China is fictionalized into a series of trials in which Kibi outwits his Chinese adversaries) and Lord Haseo (whose wager with a game-playing oni leads to a lesson in the dangers of lust). The third pair of stories touch on the adventures of female protagonists: the Weaving Maiden who goes off in search of her demon-husband Amewakahiko (a story that combines an etiology of the Star Festival—celebrating the yearly joining of the stars Vega and Altair—with a reflection on the marriage politics of the day) and the Blossom Princess (a “Cinderella story,” in which an abused step-daughter gains magi- cal assistance from a mountain hag and finds love). -
