(Jones 94).

  • Filmic Tomboy Narrative and Queer Feminist Spectatorship
UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lynne Stahl May 2015 © 2015 Lynne Stahl ALL RIGHTS RESERVED UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP Lynne Stahl, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ways in which American discourses of gender, sexuality, and emotion structure filmic narrative and the ways in which filmic narrative informs those discourses in turn. It approaches this matter through the figure of the tomboy, vastly undertheorized in literary scholarship, and explores the nodes of resistance that film form, celebrity identity, and queer emotional dispositions open up even in these narratives that obsessively domesticate their tomboy characters and pair them off with male love interests. The first chapter theorizes a mode of queer feminist spectatorship, called infelicitous reading, around the incoherently “happy” endings of tomboy films and obligatorily tragic conclusions of lesbian films; the second chapter links the political and sexual ambivalences of female-centered sports films to the ambivalent results of Title IX; and the third chapter outlines a type of queer reproductivity and feminist paranoia that emerges cumulatively in Jodie Foster’s body of work. Largely indebted to the work of Judith Butler, Lauren Berlant, and Sara Ahmed, this project engages with past and present problematics in the fields of queer theory, feminist film criticism, and affect studies—questions of nondichotomous genders, resistant spectatorship and feminist potential within linear narrative, and the chronological cues that dominant ideology builds into our understandings of gender, sexuality, narrative, and emotions.

  • Katnis Everdeen's Grandmothers
KATNIS EVERDEEN’S GRANDMOTHERS By Michael Ventura May 4, 2012 Barbara Stanwyck, clad all in black, gallops across the screen at the head of her gang of gunfighters in Sam Fuller’s Forty Guns (1957). Stanwyck’s Jessica Drummond is praised in song as the “high-ridin’ woman with a whip.” She’d played tough Western women before in Cattle Queen of Montana (1954) and The Maverick Queen (1956), but those pictures pale beside Forty Guns. Fuller’s script turned traditional definitions of women upside down and Stanwyck’s trademark mix of toughness, vulnerability and brains made her Jessica seem not aberrant but inevitable. Stanwyck came up in the 1930s, a decade still unequalled for its actresses and the central role they played in that Hollywood era. The roster speaks for itself: Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Katherine Hepburn, Jean Harlow, Mary Astor, Myrna Loy, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Arthur, Carole Lombard, Rosalind Russell, Ida Lupino, Ginger Rogers, Joan Blondell, Vivien Leigh, Claudette Colbert, Wendy Hiller -- their characters were women in a man’s world who felt no need to conceal their intelligence and range. In scripts written with the literate zest of that Hollywood era, these actresses played women who met men eye-to- eye. Their era still spoke of the “weaker sex,” but their performances challenged boundaries. Their stances said a lots that their scripts could not. By the Fifties, with rare exceptions like Fifty Guns, Hollywood gave actresses far less leeway and screenplays were, in general, not as clever. Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn – and lesser lights like Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, and Kim Novak – were strapped in tightly by their roles.

American Television, Drama by Nathan G. Tipton Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Despite a steady increase in the number of "big screen" queer characters and queerly-themed movies, the overt presence of gays and lesbians on the American small screen has been (and continues to be) far more limited. As Suzanna Danuta Walters has explained, while film has long dealt with gay subjects (albeit in often stereotyped or "tragic" ways), television's explicitly family-centric format appeared to mandate that glbtq persons were simply not a part of families that made up "typical" family audiences. After all, Walters continues, the intense intimacy and centrality of television in the personal space of family life provides a particular type of viewing experience that is fundamentally distinct from the relative anonymity of movie theaters. Not surprisingly, this family-centrism is displayed most prominently in programs shown by the five broadcast television networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, The CW, and Fox. These networks have historically been reticent about tackling homosexuality in its multifarious forms, preferring instead to leave these programming decisions to the proliferating number of cable networks. Still, long before the advent of cable, broadcast networks were tentatively exploring homosexuality by vicariously inserting into dramatic television series stereotypically gay characters. Â Early Representations From 1968 to 1974, as Edward Alwood has explained, homosexuals on television were recognizable in programs such as Kojak, M*A*S*H, Police Woman, and Hawaii Five-O because of their routine representation as limp-wristed, effeminate drag queens who walked with a swish and talked in high-pitched voices.

PoSSUM Scientist-Astronaut Qualification Program and 2015 PoSSUM Academy Class 1502 and Class 1503 October 4-14, 2015 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL www.projectpossum.org 3 October 2015 Dear PoSSUM Scientist-Astronaut Classes 1502 and 1503, On behalf of Project PoSSUM, I would like to welcome you all to the Project PoSSUM scientist- astronaut class. This is an exciting time for everyone involved with Project PoSSUM, and your class marks a first step towards a great new era of citizen-science in our upper atmosphere. In the next five days, you will embark upon a journey to understand the basic science behind the PoSSUM research program and we will assess your abilities to perform in simulated PoSSUM missions. Our Scientist-Astronauts enable cutting edge research and also serve as ambassadors that can engage and educate the public about the upper atmosphere and the vital role that it plays in the study of our global climate. Even though man has maintained a presence in orbit for decades, the mesosphere is still largely an unknown. The mesosphere is a region that we have only briefly transited in our forays to orbital space. It is a region that harbors strange ‘space clouds’, strange electrical phenomena, and ionization that brings silence to vehicles reentering through it. It is an area too high to access by balloon or aircraft yet too low to access by orbital spacecraft. It is the most unknown part of our atmosphere, and yet soon we will have the means to access this elusive region and claim our presence there.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “Evil is always waiting in the shadows and only one man would rise to stand against it.” Those are the words uttered about Ash Williams, who after three decades of avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the evil dead returns on Halloween night in “Ash vs Evil Dead,” the long awaited follow-up to the classic Evil Dead series. The 10- episode half-hour series follows Ash the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter as he is forced to face his demons, both personal and literal when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from “Evil’s” grip. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash Williams and is joined by Lucy Lawless as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks; Ray Santiago as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick; Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past; and Jill Marie Jones as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner. Premiering on Halloween night, October 31st 2015, the series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers; and Craig DiGregorio who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Fans have been clamoring for more Evil Dead for years, according to Campbell and Raimi—as much as they loved the 2013 remake, it didn’t contain fan-favorite character Ashley J.

  • Tradition and Originality in STARZ Spartacus (2010-13)
Screening a New Spartacus: Tradition and Originality in STARZ Spartacus (2010-13) (RS = Reception Studies) The Spartacus legend has inspired numerous receptions over the centuries in a variety of different media, from stage plays to ballet to film, while the figure of the rebel slave leader has often served as an icon of resistance against oppression in modern political movements and popular ideologies. The most recent adaptation of the Spartacus story is the wildly successful four-season television series on the STARZ premium cable channel, produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (of Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys), which both engages with earlier receptions as it breaks new ground. The first season, Spartacus: Blood & Sand (2010), tells of the capture of Spartacus in Thrace and his training as a gladiator in the ludus of Quintus Lentulus Batiatus; this was followed by Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), a mini-series prequel to the first season, which fills in the backstory on the rise of the lanista Batiatus in the gladiator business. The third installment (second season) of the series, Spartacus: Vengeance (2012), depicts the aftermath of the slaves’ bloody escape from the ludus, and the final season, Spartacus: War of the Damned (2013), will focus on the decisive conflict between the rebel army and the Roman military led by Marcus Licinius Crassus. While Spartacus gained immediate notoriety for its heady mix of highly stylized, CGI-enhanced violence with a shocking amount of onscreen nudity and graphic sexual acts, the series also offers a new visual, narrative, and thematic aesthetic for the depiction of the Spartacus story and its received meanings.
