Description : 300 pages, 970 ko. Description : 26 pages, 149 ko. -

Miguel De Cervantes, His Life & Works
MIGUEL DE CERVANTES ^^'r -womm Miguel de Cervantes HIS LIFE &> WORKS BY HENRY EDWARD WATTS ^ NEW EDITION REVISED AND ENLARGED WITH A COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHY AND INDEX LONDON ADAM AND CHARLES BLACK 1895 PREFACE In my first edition of Don ^ixote^ the Life of Cervantes, forming volume i., was written as an introduction to my translation, and specially with the object of marking the close connexion of the author with his work. It having been deemed advisable to issue the biography as a separate book, I have availed myself of the opportunity to amplify the life of Cervantes, adding much especially in the way of illustration of his character and of his relations with his contemporaries, with a larger survey of the condition of Spain and her literature, which, if not out of place in an introduction to Don ^uixote^ would have disturbed the harmony of my original scheme of publication. In the present work, which has been entirely recast and almost wholly re-written, a far larger space has been devoted to Cervantes as the man of letters, whose many and various achievements as poet, pastoralist, playwright, and story- teller have been somewhat unduly be-clouded by the exceeding lustre of his one great masterpiece. A fuller account is given of those minor works, which, though not all worthy of the author of Don fixate, are all deserving of study if we would understand his character and trace the development of his genius. Lastly, there has been added to this life of Cervantes, with a fuller notice of the condition of letters under the two Philips, a special chapter on the relations of the author of Don fixate to his great rival and V 203380*? -

Early Modern Spain and the Creation of the Mediterranean: Captivity, Commerce, and Knowledge by Daniel Bernardo Hershenzon
Early Modern Spain and the Creation of the Mediterranean: Captivity, Commerce, and Knowledge By Daniel Bernardo Hershenzon A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Diane Owen Hughes, Chair Professor Enrique García Santo-Tomás Professor Paul C. Johnson Assistant Professor Ryan Wesley Szpiech Associate Professor Jonathan Sheehan, Berkeley University © Daniel Bernardo Hershenzon 2011 For my beloved parents, Fanny and Joseph Hershenzon ii Acknowledgements One way of conceiving a dissertation project is thinking about it as an intellectual and emotional debt producing machine. This dissertation has been extremely efficient in this regard and I cannot begin to summarize my gratitude to all who have made this dissertation possible. I thank Diane Owen Hughes, my advisor, for her incredible support, encouragement, intellectual openness and freedom throughout the process. I could not have asked for a better mentor. The same is true for my other committee members. I thank Jonathan Sheehan for always pushing me ahead with sharp and direct criticism (not to mention helping tying a knot properly at critical moments). I thank Ryan Szpiech, who formally joined the committee only four months ago but practically formed part of the project in the last two years, for stimulating questions and thoughtful critiques. I owe a debt of gratitude to Paul Johnson for generous intellectual feedback and help with institutional mess and for Enrique García Santo-Tomás for constant support and pragmatic advice. Claire Zimmerman, Val Kivelson and Helmut Puff in Ann Arbor, Gadi Algazi and Miri Eliav-Felodn in Tel Aviv, Barbara Fuchs at UCLA, James Amelang in Madrid, and Jocelyne Dakhlia in Paris have guided me through and helped with insightful comments on early chapters’ drafts. -
