ANNOUNCEMENTS 1) OUR DEEP & SINCERE THANKS TO Archpriest Lawrence, Mat. Marie & Alex, of St. Elias Church, Battle Creek, for the beautiful silver & discus (paten) set they gave to St. Innocent Church. Their kindness & generosity are much appreciated. (2) OUR DEEP & SINCERE THANKS TO THE DONOR & INSTALLERS OF OUR NEW WOODEN FLOORING. This week we had new wooden flooring installed in the (altar) and solea, after the 34-year-old carpeting was removed last Sunday by many helping hands (thanks to them also). The new flooring was generously donated by a friend of the parish and installed by Subdeacon Methodius and his sons, Nicholas and Cyprian, all parishioners at St Vladimir's in Dexter. Many thanks to all of them for their kindness in helping to beautify our temple! (3) OUR CONTINUING AND ON-GOING THANKS TO THOSE WHO OFFERED THEIR LABOR TO MAINTAIN & BEAUTIFY OUR CHURCH GROUNDS throughout the spring, summer & fall: to First Elder John Andrayko, to Reader George Hanoian, to Matushka Rose Marie & to anonymous, who mow, edge and weed-wack the lawns, tend to the flower beds & trim and maintain the front bushes & plants. (4) OUR ANNUAL FALL BLANKET DRIVE IS HERE. Every year we collect blankets and donate them to the homeless and poor. We now are giving them to the Redford Interfaith Relief (RIR). We have been donating 150-200 for a number of years and our parish is known as the “Blanket parish.” Our goal is 200 blankets. The need is so great, that they are given out almost as fast as we deliver them. Rather than you having to buy the actual blankets and bring them in, we now are collecting the money, and we special-order them at a local Walmart. The price has gone up this year to $6 each. Please donate as much/as many as you can afford. See Mary Ann Harvilla. Holy Apostle James, the Brother of God (Adelphotheos) was the son [from his previous marriage] of Righteous Joseph the Betrothed of the Most Holy (December 26). From his early years James was a Nazarene, a man especially dedicated to God. The Nazarenes vowed to preserve their virginity, to abstain from wine, to refrain from eating meat, and not to cut their hair. The vow of the Nazarenes symbolized a life of holiness and purity, commanded formerly by the Lord for all Israel. When the Savior began to teach the nation about the Kingdom of God, St James believed in Christ and became His apostle. He was chosen as the first Bishop of Jerusalem.

St James presided over the Council of Jerusalem and his word was decisive (Acts 15). In his thirty years as bishop, St James converted many of the Jews to . Annoyed by this, the Pharisees and the Scribes plotted together to kill St James. They led the saint up on the pinnacle of the Jerusalem Temple and asked what he thought of Jesus. The holy Apostle began to bear witness that Christ is the Messiah, which was not the response the Pharisees were expecting. Greatly angered, the Jewish teachers threw him off the roof. The saint did not die immediately, but gathering his final strength, he prayed to the Lord for his enemies while they were stoning him. St James’ martyrdom occurred about 63 A.D.

The holy Apostle James composed a Divine Liturgy, which formed the basis of the Liturgies of Sts Basil the Great and John Chrysostom. The Church has preserved an Epistle of St James, one of the books of the New Testament.

In 1853, Patriarch Hierotheus of Alexandria sent to Moscow a portion of the relics of St James.

The Church distinguishes between [3 Apostles named James:] (1) the holy Apostle James the Brother of the Lord (October 23rd), and

(2) the holy Apostle St James [the Great], (3) the holy Apostle St James [the Less], the son of Zebedee (April 30), the son of Alphaeus (October 9),. & Brother of St. John the Theologian, and & Brother of Evangelist St. Matthew. THINE OWN OF THINE OWN By. Fr. Vladimir Berzonsky “Thoughts in Christ,” oca.org, 1/1/12

“Thine own of Thine own, we offer to Thee, in behalf of all, and for all.” ( of Gifts)

What gift can we offer to You which is truly ours to give? Even the awareness of our poverty is a gift that comes from Your Holy Spirit. Like the Little Drummer Boy of the Christmas carol, we have no gifts to bring, unless it be the free will to desire to be here at this moment of the Divine Liturgy at the of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of You Yourself, our Lord Christ Jesus, and Your heavenly Father, the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth and all that is in it. In Your great wisdom, Lord Jesus, You chose from the meal the items that require some effort and talent or preparation on behalf of humans. The seeds of wheat planted and cultivated until ripened and made into flour and then bread is Your way of allowing us to take pride in the product; and so too the wine from the grapes. Your bread is our precious nourishment and Your wine having become Your Blood is the stimulant that fires us from complacency, invigorating us with zeal to be worthy of those Gifts.

We learn humility, like its root humus, is a reminder that “You shall eat bread in the sweat of your face till you return from the ground from which you were taken” (Genesis 3:19). We elevate the memory of that announcement spoken by the Almighty as response to Adam’s disobedience. This bread will become the revocation of that curse, because it shall turn into the Bread of Life, the unique Body of God’s only- begotten Son and our Lord, Jesus Christ, Who came into the world to free us from Adam’s sin. Indeed, we return like the wheat and vine, yet the part of us created originally to live forever with the Holy will go on with Christ to meet the Father with Whom we are reconciled by the humble obedience of God’s will as demonstrated in His acceptance of the cross.

We learn discernment. Life is a continual process of decisions and choices. What is the cost of eternal life? Where on earth do we discover the one precious jewel, that pearl (Matthew 13:45) worth the cost of all other jewels in the world; and once we find it, what shall we do with it? This explains what monastics do with their lives, but it is not only they – all of us have the Christian obligation to sort out the genuine from the fraudulent, the true from the imitation, the lofty from the banal at each stage of our lives here on earth.

We learn loyalty. Only Jesus Christ could win our salvation, and only to Him do we commit ourselves to love, honor and obey throughout our lives here on earth. Because He gave His life for us even to the death on the cross, we cannot live as mere spectators going through the rituals of the faith without offering our own lives as witnesses to His glory and as disciples engaged in manifesting His concerns in all ways possible.

We learn that Church is family. Never is it a One-on-one relationship, but as God is Three Persons in unity, so the two or three assembled in are part of an uncountable number of those united through Christ with Father by the Holy Spirit – not only in the parish and diocese, but universally at a certain holy feast day or Sunday. We are members of the Church past, all who have fallen asleep in the Lord since Pentecost, and those who were snatched out of Hades on that most sacred day of rest when God was at work saving those held by death, and all those yet to be born, baptized and welcomed in the holy Church of the future. NEWS: ABDUCTED IN SYRIA IN 2013 ALIVE, CURRENTLY IN RAQQA From: Pravoslavie.ru, 10/27/16; Source: sputniknews.com

According to preliminary data, Syrian bishops abducted in the vicinity of the country's northern city of Aleppo in 2013 are alive and currently in the city of Raqqa occupied by the Daesh militant group [ISIS], a mother superior at the and of Saint James the Mutilated, located in the western Syrian town of Qarah, said Wednesday. In 2013, militants captured Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo Paul Yazidzhi and Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo John St. James Monastery & Convent, Qarah, Syria Ibrahim. In December 2015, reports emerged about their execution. "We have received information from our sources that they are in Raqqa, and we are concerned over their lives. We are praying for their liberation before the final attack on Raqqa," Mother Agnes Mariam Salib said at a press conference. She added that numerous Christian community members were also praying for the liberation of the two bishops. Social protests against Damascus in 2011 have turned into a protracted civil war in the Middle Eastern nation that has already claimed thousands of lives. The conflict is also characterized by the stepping-up of activities of various radical Islamists, such as the Daesh [ISIS] (outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States), which gained notoriety for kidnapping and killing Christians, as well as worshipers from non-Sunni religious groups. In July 2015, Pope Francis used the term "genocide" to describe the violence committed by extremists against Christians in the Middle East. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + NEWS: CHRISTIAN FAMILY LOSES GAY CAKE CASE From: Pravoslavie.ru, 10/24/16; Source:ChristianHeadlines.com The Court of Appeal in Belfast [Scotland] has ruled against the owners of a bakery who appealed their case after they were accused of discrimination for refusing to make a cake with the phrase “Support Gay Marriage.” Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan and two senior judges upheld County Court Judge Isobel Brownlie’s ruling that the McArthur family, owners of the Ashers Baking Company, discriminated against Gareth Lee. The judges said that refusing service because of the slogan could be classified as “direct discrimination.” “What they may not do is provide a service that only reflects their own political or religious message in relation to sexual orientation,” the judgment said. In response to the ruling, Deputy Director for Public Affairs for the Christian Institute has called for the law to be changed to protect families like the McArthur family. “Equality laws are there to protect people from discrimination, not to force people to associate themselves with a cause they oppose,” he said. “But those same laws have become a weapon in the hands of those who want to oppress anyone who dissents from the politically-correct norms of the moment. The law needs to change before more damage is done.” Said Daniel McArthur, general manager of the bakery: “We’re extremely disappointed with today’s ruling. If equality law means people can be punished for politely refusing to support other people’s causes, then equality law needs to change. “This ruling undermines democratic freedom,” he continued. “It undermines religious freedom. It undermines free speech.” FISHING FOR SOULS IN THE 4th BIGGEST ISLAND OF THE WORLD By Bishop Ignatios of Madagascar From: www.pravoslavie.ru, December 16, 2015

Dear friends of the Mission, Rejoice in the Lord! I contact you with a lot of joy, firstly to thank you for your ceaseless support to our humble missionary ministry, and secondly to let you know of the progress of the two churches whose funding you have overtaken. The construction work for the first church in Diego, Saint , is nearing the end, and the church may be rendered operational by Christmas. As I have mentioned many times, here in this country, all types of work are done by hand, with primitive means and many obstacles, which usually delay their completion. Moreover, adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rains, oftentimes hinder continuous work. The second church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, smaller than the former, has already been completed and awaits its opening. Due to the long distance, it was impossible for me to send you photos of the churches. I hope that I will soon be able to respond to this request of yours. We praise God and thank our donors for this blessing that amidst the crisis, new churches are constructed for the glory of the Triune God and the salvation of mankind. Our struggle continues in every aspect and, despite the great difficulties, many people come into every day and after the due catechesis, they are led to the first of our Church, Baptism. This year, we have conducted many group baptisms in a river. Furthermore, with the blessings of our venerable prelate, Pope and Patriarch Theodore [of Alexandria], some graduates of our Seminary were ordained into the first rank of priesthood (i.e they became ) and some others into the second one (that of the presbyter), thus covering some of the many vacancies in our parishes. The Seminary operates normally with new and old students. We keep on visiting villages for catechizing, conducting of holy services, reviewing projects and, most importantly, communicating with people, something they greatly need. People are thirsty for hearing the words of God as well as for learning more about God and our Orthodox faith in general. What impresses me the most is that they regularly attend the holy services sparing no labors, walking through long trails barefoot under the hot sun. The charity work also goes on, though not as intensively as in the past. Some activities have been halted due to the ongoing financial crisis. New institutions will start operating very soon, since they were inaugurated during our Patriarch’s visit. Such buildings are the orphanage, the new wing of the hospital, the University and some churches. We give glory to God and thank people for the blessings they gave us. If possible, I would also like to ask you to consider helping us in purchasing the interior equipment for two new sacred churches, the one of Saint Archangels — so that it can operate this Nativity period, as well as that of Transfiguration. Moreover, the equipment of the orphanage wing that was constructed with funds by an anonymous lady from Thessaloniki through your Fraternity, will cost ca. 15,000 euros. Last but not least, I would be grateful if you could schedule the shipment of a new container with useful goods we highly need, such as food supplies, second-hand household appliances and stationery for students. In this way, you will substantially help our work, as you have already done in the past. Thank you for everything. May God be with you. †Ignatios of Madagascar Source: Orthodox Missionary Fraternity
