/ CHAPTER 3 State Forestry in Belgium since the End of the Eighteenth Century Pierre-Alain Tallier, Hilde Verboven, Kris Vandekerkhove, Hans Baeté and Kris Verheyen Forests are a key element in the structure of the landscape. Today they cover about 692,916 hectares, or about 22.7 per cent of Belgium. Unevenly distributed over the country, they constitute one of Belgium’s rare natural resources. For centuries, people have shaped these forests according to their needs and interests, resulting in the creation of man- aged forests with, to a greater or lesser extent, altered structure and species composition. Belgian forests have a long history in this respect. For millennia, they have served as a hideout, a place of worship, a food storage area and a material reserve for our ancestors. Our predecessors not only found part of their food supply in forests, but used the avail- able resources (herbs, leaves, brooms, heathers, beechnuts, acorns, etc.) to feed and to make their flocks of cows, goats and sheep prosper. Above all, forests have provided people with wood – a natural and renewable resource. As in many countries, depending on the available trees and technological evolutions, wood products have been used in various and multiple ways, such as heating and cooking (firewood, later on charcoal), making agricultural implements and fences (farmwood), and constructing and maintaining roads. Forests delivered huge quan- tities of wood for fortification, construction and furnishing, pit props, naval construction, coaches and carriages, and much more. Wood remained a basic material for industrial production up until the begin- ning of the nineteenth century, when it was increasingly replaced by iron, concrete, plastic and other synthetic materials. -

Rappel de la démarche Fort des créations et des renforcements de lignes permettant de fortifier l’ossature du transport public en Wallonie, l’AOT pilote un travail de redéfinition de l’offre TEC autour de ces réseaux structurants urbains et interurbains. Le principe de base de ces redéploiements est d’aligner le réseau cible avec les flux de mobilité tout mode (train, voiture, ...) et tout motif (travail, école, loisirs, ...) concernant les territoires étudiés et leur évolution, au-delà de la seule fréquentation actuelle de l’offre TEC. L’ambition est en effet de faire se parler la planification territoriale et la planification de l’offre de transport public qui doivent s’alimentent mutuellement. D’ici 2023, 17 zones pluricommunales (représentant la moitié de l’offre TEC actuelle) sont étudiées en profondeur et un nouveau réseau (cible) est élaboré pour chaque zone sur base des orientations stratégiques régionales (e.a. hiérarchisation du réseau). Ce travail est réalisé en concertation étroite entre l’Autorité Organisatrice du Transport (SPW Mobilité&Infrastuctures) et diverses parties prenantes : OTW, acteurs locaux (Communes, Province, Intercommunales, ...) et autres (IEW, UWE, SNCB, ...) sur base de la méthodologie (informations générales) (informations partagée au point précédent de cette séance. : 1718 : 1718 Le résultat de ces travaux permet l’établissement de Plans Régionaux de Transport Public par vert zone soumis pour avis formel aux Organes de Consultation des bassins de mobilité concernés. -

Observations floristiques inédites de plantes rares ou intéressantes du bassin hydrographique de la Semois (période 1992-1994) Daniel THOEN Fondation Universitaire Luxembourgeoise, Avenue de Longwy, 185, B-6700 Arlon Résumé. — Une prospection fioristique dans le bassin hydrographique de la Semois, notamment des îles, des bras-morts, des noues de la vallée, d'Arlon (Belgique) à Monthermé (France) a permis d'effectuer de nombreuses observations floristiques originales. Sont signalées pour la première (ou la deuxième) fois en Semois, Alisma lanceolatum, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Arabis hirsuta, Dipsacuspilosus, Elodea nuttal- lii, Eiysimum cheiranthoides, Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, Impatiens glandulifera, Impatiens pmyiflom, Lamium maculatum, Lobelia erinus, Mimulus guttalus, Oenanthe fislulosa, Ornithogalum umbellatum subsp. umbellatum, Phalaris canaiïensis, Plantago arenaria, Sempervivum tectarum, Solarium lycopersi- cum, Solarium villosum subsp. villosum, Solidago canadensis, Spirodella polyrhiza, Vinca major. Des es- pèces que l'on croyait disparues ou en forte régression ont été observées à nouveau: Corrigiola littoralis, Eleocharis acicularis, Leersia oiyzoides. Summary. — Several original floristic datas were collected during a prospection of the Semois hydro- graphie bassin from Arlon (Belgium) to Monthermé (France), including islands and dead streams. The catchment sizes vary from 4km2 to nearly 2700km2. Bankfull discharge value increases with basin size. In the case of gravel-bed 1´044 rivers developed on an impermeable substratum, the following equation emerges: Qb=0´087 A . Bankfull discharge recurrence interval was determined by ®tting maximum annual ¯oods (Ta) into Gumbel's distribution and then using the partial duration series (Tp) in this same distribution. Recurrence interval is below 0´7 years (Tp) for small pebble-bed rivers developed on an impermeable substratum; it reaches 1´1 to 1´5 years when the catchment size of these rivers exceeds 250km2. Rivers incised in the soft schists of the Famenne show larger channel capacity at bankfull stage, a small width/ depth ratio and thus higher recurrence intervals (1´4±5´3 years with Ta and 1±4´4 years with Tp). Base¯ow-dominated gravel-bed streams and sandy or silty rivers experience less frequent bankfull discharges, with a recurrence interval higher than 2 or even 3 years (Tp). 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This study aims to characterize Belgian clays in order to evaluate their use for manufacture of compressed earth blocks (CEB). Nineteen Belgian clay deposits were sampled in 56 sites and 135 samples were collected and analyzed. The analyses focus on the determination of particle size, plasticity, nature and mineralogy as the main characteristics for assessing the suitability of the raw clays to make CEB. These analyses allow for classifying the sampled clay deposits in three categories: clays that can be used unchanged to make CEB (2 clay deposits), clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB but require addition of sand and gravel particles (13 clay deposits) and clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB if they are mixed with other raw clays (4 clay deposits). In order to verify the use of these clays, five of them served as a model for making CEB. The strength of these bricks was evaluated by testing for compressive strength and abrasion resistance. The results of these tests confirm the suitability or not of the sampled clays for the manufacture of CEB.
