This study aims to characterize Belgian clays in order to evaluate their use for manufacture of compressed earth blocks (CEB). Nineteen Belgian clay deposits were sampled in 56 sites and 135 samples were collected and analyzed. The analyses focus on the determination of particle size, plasticity, nature and mineralogy as the main characteristics for assessing the suitability of the raw clays to make CEB. These analyses allow for classifying the sampled clay deposits in three categories: clays that can be used unchanged to make CEB (2 clay deposits), clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB but require addition of sand and gravel particles (13 clay deposits) and clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB if they are mixed with other raw clays (4 clay deposits). In order to verify the use of these clays, five of them served as a model for making CEB. The strength of these bricks was evaluated by testing for compressive strength and abrasion resistance. The results of these tests confirm the suitability or not of the sampled clays for the manufacture of CEB. -

Sequence analysis and transition to adulthood: An exploration of the access to reproduction in Nineteenth- 1 Century East Belgium Michel Oris and Gilbert Ritschard Abstract In the population history of European pre-industrial population, late marriage and high level of final celibacy are seen as the most important components of demographic regimes, avoiding an excessive demographic pressure on scarce resources. While during the last decades the scientific approach emphasized the study of individual life trajectories, life transitions are still often considered isolated from each other. In this paper, we look at marriage from an original perspective, as one event on the road to adulthood, whom the position in a given life course is related with other steps like leaving home, establishing a household, and the access to legitimate reproduction through a first birth. Sequence analysis is definitively the appropriate tool for a holistic and integrative approach of the various roads young men and women could take to enter into adulthood. Working on 19th century rural regions in East Belgium, we used TraMineR to reconstruct sequences and identified four clusters both for males and females. To complete this exploratory data-mining with an explanatory point of view, we proceeded to univariate ANOVA-like discrepancy analyses of the life trajectories, and then grew a regression tree for our sequences. -

Every year calls for project proposals are launched covering the LIFE programme’s priority areas. ABOUT LIFE The LIFE programme is the EU's funding instrument for the environment and climate action. It has been running since 1992 and has co-financed more than 4 500 projects across the EU and in third countries, mobilising over €9 billion and contributing more than €4 billion to the protection of the environment and climate. The budget for the LIFE programme for 2014–2020 is set at €3.4 billion in current prices, with a sub-programme for environment and a sub-programme for climate action. Desmond KIME Summary (BIERNAUX, 1972) and the first Belgian millipede atlas concerning these two groups (BIERNAUX, 1971). Ecological thresholds are defined as points or zones at which a rapid change occurs from one ecological condition to another. The existence of thresholds in species–habitat relationships has important implications for management, but the lack of concordance across studies and the wide range of methods used make generalizations difficult. We used two different statistical methods to test for the existence of thresholds for both individual species and the whole community, using three newt species as models. Based on a sample of 371 ponds, we found significant thresholds for both landscape configuration and composition. These were for the relationships between distance to forest and occurrence of Triturus alpestris and T. helveticus, and forest and crop cover and T. helveticus. Variability in the location of thresholds observed for the different species in this study caution against their use at the community level. Future studies should be based on the identification and assessment of thresholds for targeted species. Thresholds can be a useful concept from which tools may be developed to focus conservation effort for threatened species and their habitats. LIFE Herbages project Review of 7.5 years of grassland and meadow restoration in Belgian Lorraine and southern Ardennes What is a LIFE project? LIFE projects are the result of a European funding program created in 1992 whose objective is to support the development and implementation of the European policy on environment and sustainable development. A “LIFE Nature” project is specifically dedicated to the conservation of the flora, fauna and their habitats. These programs are developed within the Natura2000 network, which aims to restore connections between natural habitats across the continent. Since 1994, 26 LIFE-Nature projects have been funded in the Walloon Region. At Natagora alone, 21 of these projects have restored more than 2,300 ha of habitat and created more than 1,500 ha of additional nature reserves. And these orders of magnitude are similar for the Nature and Forest Department (DNF) of the Walloon Region! Background and objectives of the LIFE “Herbages” project Grasslands and permanent meadows, which are neither ploughed nor amended, are among the most species- rich ecosystems. This grassland biodiversity plays an essential role in our environment: conservation of rare and endangered heritage species, quality food for livestock, pollination, water purification, atmospheric carbon storage, erosion and flood control, phytopharmaceuticals resources, leisure and relaxation… However, in the Walloon Region, around 5 hectares of permanent meadows disappear every day in favour of intensive crops or urbanization (cf. SPF Economy). Both at European and Walloon level, meadows and grasslands are the habitats that are experiencing the greatest degradation of their biodiversity. The objective of this LIFE Herbages project was therefore to improve the biodiversity and connectivity of at least 400 hectares of meadows, grasslands, marshes and humid forests on 26 sites of the Natura 2000 network in the Belgian Lorraine and southern Ardennes.
