(Paris: Vrin, 1955), 19–50. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION The study that I present in these pages is by no means a general statement of Saint Augustine’s political doctrine. That has been done many times.1 The goal of my research is more limited. All medievalists have been struck by the profound intermingling of the Church and the State, which forms one of the characteristic traits of medieval civilization. How did this intimate relationship operate? How was the old Roman idea of the State absorbed by the increasing influence of the Christian idea, to the point that it led to the theory of the two swords in the twelfth century? That is the question. I have named this progressive, irregular movement political Augustinism, for want of a better term.2 I endeavored to define its formation and to mark some of its stages with precision. If by doing so I was able to open some avenues of research, in which I have directed several of my students, then I will have fully achieved my goal. I sought to observe the lives of certain ideas—to catch, in a way, their distortion in the minds of those that were simpler than the protagonists who inspired them, and to establish how these ideas came to transform major institutions, such as the monarchy. 1 See in particular the recent work of Gustave Combès, La doctrine politique de saint Augustin, Paris, 1927 (482 p.). -

Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. The Funerals of the Habsburg Emperors In the Eighteenth Century MARK HENGERER 1. Introduction The dassic interpretation of the eighteenth century as aperiod of transition-from sacred kingship to secular state, from a divine-right monarchy to enlightened absolutism, from religion to reason-neglects, so the editor of this volume suggests, aspects of the continuing impact of religion on European royal culture during this period, and ignores the fact that secularization does not necessarily mean desacralization. If we take this point of view, the complex relationship between monarchy and religion, such as appears in funerals, needs to be revisited. We still lack a comparative and detailed study of Habsburg funerals throughout the entire eighteenth century. DERMOT MORAN University College Dublin AN ORIGINAL CHRISTIAN PLATONISM: ERIUGENA'S RESPONSE TO THE TRADITION In keeping with the theme of this FIDEM conference, «Medieval Studies Today and Tomorrow», in this contribution I want to report on the tremendous blossoming of studies in the philosophy of Johannes Scottus Eriugena, witnessed by the growth in critical editions, translations and critical discussions, over not just the past 10 years, but the past 30 years'. The man known to his contemporaries as Johannes Scottus (c.800 - c.877), and who signed himself 'Eriugena' (on the manuscript of his translation of Dionysius), is without doubt the most I genuinely sophisticated philosopher of the Carolingian era, certainly to be ranked above such Carolingians as Alcuin", and indeed, stands as the most important philosopher writing in Latin between Boethius and Anselm. He is also, though this parallel remains to be explored, more or less a contemporary of the Arab Neoplatonist Al-Kindi. Eriugena can also be seen as the most significant intellectual figure to emerge from monastic Ireland, the so-called Island of Saints and Scholars, between the sixth to the ninth century (in comparison with Sedulius Scottus or Columban), although his debt to early Irish culture remains much disputed, even allowing for the fact that he worked, at least in part, with Irish-speaking scholars. In general terms, Eriugena's thought represents a valiant, even inspired attempt to present a consistent, systematic, Christian Neoplatonist account of God, the universe, and all creation, a version , I would like to thank Professor Dr. Theo Kobusch, Bochum, for inviting me to I take part in this panel.
