  • Fourteen Holy Helpers (F.D
FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS (F.D. AUGUST 8) (As used by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russian, Western Rite Vicariate) A group of saints invoked with special confidence because they have proven themselves efficacious helpers in adversity and difficulties, are known and venerated under the name Fourteen Holy Helpers. Devotion to these fourteen as a group spread in response to the Black Plague which devastated Europe from 1346 to 1349. Among its symptoms were the tongue turning black, a parched throat, violent headache, fever, and boils on the abdomen. It attacked without warning, robbed its victims of reason, and killed within a few hours; many died without the last Sacraments. Brigands roamed the roads, people suspected of contagion were attacked, animals died, people starved, whole villages vanished into the grave, social order and family ties broke down, and the disease appeared incurable. The pious turned to heaven, begging the intervention of the saints, praying to be spared or cured. This group devotion began in Germany. The names of the fourteen Saints varied from place to place, but the primary principle of their selection was the efficacy of their intercession against various diseases—most, but not all, were venerated as Martyrs. Typically named are the following Saints: Achatius (Agathius), Barbara, Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Cyriacus, Dionysius (Denys), Erasmus (Elmo) of Formia, Eustace (Eustathius), George, Giles, Margaret of Antioch, Panteleimon, & Vitus. For one or other of the above were sometimes named Saints Anthony the Great, Leonard, Nicholas, or Sebastian. Sts. Christopher and Giles were invoked against the plague itself. St. Dionysius was prayed to for relief from headache, St.

She died in 432 AD in Rhine River Valley, Germany. Notes for Paramund: Paramund was born about 370 AM in Westphalia, Germany. He died about 430 AD at Rhine River Valley, Germany. Paramund is the 25th great grandfather of Louis, husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1123-1204), the 14th great grandmother of Edward Southworth, the husband of Alice Carpenter, my 7th great grandmother. What is the significance of following this line? First of all, he is a ling through which descendants flow through the Westmoreland family into which our daughter, Tiffany Lenn Sharpe Westmoreland married when she married Steve O. Westmoreland. Tiffany's mother- in-law, Betty Katherine Covington Westmoreland, generously provided for me most of this genealogical information, and my appreciation of her is great for that. There are some interesting people in that line. Here are the interesting people in that line. This descendants’ line from Paramund of Germany contains 59 generations coming down to our contemporary family, down to our Westmoreland grandchildren. This line comes through our son-in-law’s connections. Notable names most people may recognize include Charles “The Hammer” Martel (686-741), Mayor of the Palace, ruling the Franks, and best remembered winning the Battle of Tours in 732, a battle that halted the Islamic expansion in Europe at that time. William the Conqueror is best known for leading the Normans from France across the English Channel to conquer England and to have himself crowned King of England in 1066.

  • Kto Może Zostać Patronem Opactwa? Kilka Uwag O Budowaniu Pamięci Historycznej W Opactwie Saint-Denis W XII Wieku 1
Zeszyty Naukowe Towarzystwa Doktorantów UJ Nauki Społeczne, Numer 12 (1/2016) Marcin Bogusz Uniwersytet Warszawski Zakład Nauk Pomocniczych i Metodologii Historii e-mail: [email protected] Kto może zostać patronem opactwa?
