Monique, a threadmaker and native of Tournai, lived in the lodging house kept by M. Paul.     / CHAPTER 3 State Forestry in Belgium since the End of the Eighteenth Century Pierre-Alain Tallier, Hilde Verboven, Kris Vandekerkhove, Hans Baeté and Kris Verheyen Forests are a key element in the structure of the landscape. Today they cover about 692,916 hectares, or about 22.7 per cent of Belgium. Unevenly distributed over the country, they constitute one of Belgium’s rare natural resources. For centuries, people have shaped these forests according to their needs and interests, resulting in the creation of man- aged forests with, to a greater or lesser extent, altered structure and species composition. Belgian forests have a long history in this respect. For millennia, they have served as a hideout, a place of worship, a food storage area and a material reserve for our ancestors. Our predecessors not only found part of their food supply in forests, but used the avail- able resources (herbs, leaves, brooms, heathers, beechnuts, acorns, etc.) to feed and to make their flocks of cows, goats and sheep prosper. Above all, forests have provided people with wood – a natural and renewable resource. As in many countries, depending on the available trees and technological evolutions, wood products have been used in various and multiple ways, such as heating and cooking (firewood, later on charcoal), making agricultural implements and fences (farmwood), and constructing and maintaining roads. Forests delivered huge quan- tities of wood for fortification, construction and furnishing, pit props, naval construction, coaches and carriages, and much more. Wood remained a basic material for industrial production up until the begin- ning of the nineteenth century, when it was increasingly replaced by iron, concrete, plastic and other synthetic materials.

AVANT-PROPOS FLANDREAU LION ! FLANDREFLANDRE AUX LIENS... Ces deux cris paraissent symboliser le destin de notre terroir. Le premier — qui est le cri de guerre des vieux Flamands — rappelle leur légendaire courage tant sur les champs de bataille que dans les durs labeurs de l'exis- tence, tandis que le second, amère constatation d'un anonyme, évoque le sort tragique d'un pays qui, sur cette frontière que constitua longtemps la Lys supérieure, a vécu un grand nombre d'heures douloureuses et passé trop souvent de mains en mains. Passionné d'histoire dès l'enfance, nous avions toujours été frappé par le fait que le passé de Merville — le cher pays de notre famille maternelle, où nous ramenèrent chaque année les vacances scolaires et plus tard l'exode d'octobre 1914 - n'avait jamais fait l'objet d'une étude d'ensemble. Lorsqu'on questionnait à ce sujet nos concitoyens plus âgés, l'on obtenait généralement que des réponses vagues et le plus1 souvent erronées... C'est donc d'abord la curiosité qui nous a incité à entreprendre cet ouvrage que nous envisagions comme un hommage à notre petite patrie, si meurtrie en 1918, mais, par la suite —horrifié par l'ampleur et la fréquence des désastres subis — nous avons considéré comme un véritable devoir de signaler au public non averti que notre malheureuse cité, en un palmarès peu enviable, avait connu entre 879 et 1940 six destructions totales et au moins cinq destructions partielles, auxquelles s'ajoutaient d'innombrables et dévastatrices inondations.

Along the road to Aachen I saw kids playing soldiers with tin-pipe cannons and little helmets, emulating their fathers at the front. At Maastricht we crossed the Meuse. The Belgians had blown up the bridges but the German pioniere [sappers] had slapped up two new iron bridges within 24 hours. Here posters forbade citizens outside their homes after ro p.m. lest they be shot by patrols. Along the Meuse Valley we passed long lines of refugees plodding back to their homes after the vain flight, dodging German Army trucks which drove at top speed along the nar­ row road. In Liege bread was being rationed though food seemed sufficient. We were told to stock up as we were enter­ ing an area where food was scarce. On the road to Namur signs of heavy fighting increased. Mine traps, still charged, forced us off the highway. In Namur almost all houses in the northern section of town had been hit or shelled, bridges blown up and guts of houses scattered in the streets. Store­ keepers were doing business in shops with their fronts blown out. This war was fought along the roads. Messerschmitts swept low across the center of a road, machine-gunning Allied truck columns, but bombs were not dropped on the roads.

The green zone is ideal for young and old to enjoy some undisturbed peace. And in the middle of a city! The banks bring you wonderfully close to the fresh water and the moored pleasure craft, so that you can sit on one of the delightful terraces and almost feel the water. After the Middle Ages, the River Leie, and the linen and damask industry that grew up around it, played the leading role. Successfully too! From the 18th century Kortrijk enjoyed fame as the world centre for fl ax. Thanks to the creative entrepreneurship of its people, Kortrijk grew to become the vibrant, economic heart of the region. A new Leie needs new bridges. Seven impressive examples redraw the Kortrijk skyline and aff ord it a distinctive, imposing appearance. No boring or identical copies, but seven distinctive bridges that will help both visitors and locals orientate themselves.
