Ombrukket3_Layout 1 11.06.10 12.28 Side 45 Runes and metrics On the metricity of the older runic inscriptions By Michael Schulte The paper argues that the metrical status of the older runic inscriptions has been partly overestimated in the research literature, and that it is more likely to account for traditions of elevated, stylized prose instead. In the present discussion, three di- agnostic criteria will be assessed: 1. the syllable-count, 2. quantity-sensitivity and 3. the structural complexity of the alliterative scheme. The fine divide between style and metrics will be exemplified by inscriptions such as Noleby, Sjælland II, Tjurkö I and last but not least, the Stentoften–Björketorp group. In conclusion, the Ger- manic long-line represents the only true metrical form within the older runic cor- pus, whereas the bulk of the Early runic inscriptions are identified as artefacts of elevated prose style with typical features of formulaic diction.1 1 Introduction Although mainstream research favours assumptions about elaborate met- rical forms of particular early Runic texts, this is by no means imperative. The overemphasis of metrical structure is partly due to the reliance on Siev- ersian metrical grammar on a strictly measuring basis (e.g. Sievers 1893).2 Frank Hübler, however, in his study of Viking-Age inscriptions, accounts for a state of metrical indeterminacy (cf. Fundort Bereits seit Ende der 1970er Jahre war bekannt, dass sich auf dem Alacher Feld und benachbarten Fluren zwischen den Erfurter Vororten Gottstedt, Frienstedt und Bindersleben eine Siedlung der römischen Kaiserzeit befand. Der Bau der Autobahn 71 im Rahmen des Verkehrsprojektes Deutsche Ein- heit sollte den Fundplatz durchschneiden. Daher wurden auf der geplanten Trasse in den Jahren 2000–2003 Ausgrabungen durchgeführt und auf den Nachbarfluren noch einmal 2004 und 2005 Sondagen vorgenommen. Es wur- den gut zwei Hektar und damit ein Drittel des Fundplatzes untersucht, dabei konnten ungefähr 1500 archäologische Befunde erfasst und neben ungefähr einer Tonne Keramik, Hüttenlehm und Tierknochen etwa 3000 Sonderfunde (Bunt- und Edelmetall, Eisen, Knochengeräte, Spinnwirtel, Webgewichte) ge- borgen werden.1 1.1. Dear Colleague: It is my pleasure to invite you to the Twenty-Eighth International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo which will convene from May 6-9, 1993 on the campus of Western Michigan University under the sponsorship of WMU's Medieval Institute. I call your attention to two highlights of this year's Congress: the German-American Colloquium on German Medieval History sponsored by the Medieval Academy of America and the German Historical Institute in Washington, and the Symposium on the Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages organized by Professor Jeanette Beer of Purdue University. We are delighted to welcome the early music ensemble Sequentia back to Kalamazoo and look forward to their performance of Vox Feminae: Music from Medieval Women's Cloisters on Thursday evening. On Friday evening, Eberhard Kummer from Vienna, also on a return visit, will perform songs by the Middle High German songwriter Neidhard, and on Saturday night AAI Productions from New York will present several one-act plays from the 7 Sins / 7 Virtues, a project conceived and directed by Melanie Sutherland. These provocative plays explore the traditional seven deadly sins and the seven cardinal virtues through modem interpretations by AAI's resident playwrights. In addition an exhibit sponsored by the Friends of the Road to Santiago entitled "Celebrating the Holy Year: Santiago, a Saint of Two Worlds/Spanish Sketches--Marking the Millenium" will be on display in the Fetzer Center for the duration of the Congress. Mikael Males Chapter 21 Imagining the Holy Land in the Old Norse World In Old Norse literature as elsewhere in the literature of medieval Europe, many im- ages of Jerusalem and the Holy Land are to be found, not mutually exclusive, but rather adding to a range of functions and meanings. In an Icelandic twelfth-century itinerary, we encounter the pious pilgrim, admiring the blood of Christ on the ground where the cross had stood. From twelfth-century Orkney, by contrast, we have runic and poetic evidence of boastful Viking crusaders, belittling the cowards who stayed at home and viewing the concept of the Holy Land through the lens of the world of the sagas. In thirteenth-century Iceland, we find a peculiar version of the Holy Land in a local setting, fully integrated into Icelandic saga style. As late converts on the fringe of the known world, the Nordic peoples were removed in time and space from the events and sites that mattered most to salvation. In the Orcadian and Icelandic material, we see a creative negotiation of both the spatial and temporal distance. This chapter focuses on the attitudes to Jerusalem and the Holy Land found in some Old Norse sources, as well as the strategies used for mak- ing them, as it were, domestic. The first obvious act of domestication lies in the name Jerusalem itself, which in Old Norse was called Jórsalir. This is apparently the result of a reanalysis of the name, and it is likely that the name meant something like “royal halls” or “the city of the king” at the time of imposition. -

1 Representations of Christ in Christian Skaldic Poetry Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle UCL PhD 2 I, Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis aims to demonstrate that, through use of literary genre, vocabulary, and emphasis of detail, the authors of Christian skaldic verse in the twelfth to fifteenth centuries continually reshaped a specific set of representations for Christ to suit each poem’s individual purpose, its audience, and the literary tastes of the periods in which they were written. In order to show how Christ’s portrayal changes over time and according to each poem’s overarching purpose, I have selected the following five Christian skaldic poems and made each the focus of a chapter: Einarr Skúlason’s Geisli, Gamli kanóki’s Harmsól, and the anonymously-composed poems Leiðarvísan, Líknarbraut, and Lilja. Within each chapter I provide an overview of the poem, selecting stanzas that highlight features of Christ that are prevalent or striking in some way, and analyse how these representations not only influence the poem itself, but also shape perceptions of Christ’s relationship with humanity. Each chapter leads to an overall consideration both of the image of Christ as this has been represented, and of the degree to which this has been influenced by biblical and patristic writings, Old Norse literature and culture, or by a combination of these elements. In the concluding chapter I identify the prevailing representations of Christ throughout these five poems, dividing these characterisations into five categories: Christ as Warrior Chieftain, as Healer and Abundant Nourisher, as Legal Authority, as Beguiler, and as Light. -

BEITRÄGE I. Antike und Mittelalter Tamás Adamik (Budapest) Horazens Hymnus auf Bacchus (2, 19) 1. Laut Walter Wili gehören das Staatslied und der Götterhymnus bei Horaz zusam- men, so wie bei den Römern Staat und Gott überhaupt. Es kann darnach nicht mehr verwundern, daß in der Liedersammlung sich elf Hymnen an Götter finden und zwölf ‘Staatsgedichte’; daß überdies der hymnische Anruf noch in acht weiteren Gedichten Form wurde und damit insgesamt ein starkes Drittel der Gedichte von festlich-staat- lich-göttlichem Charakter getragen ist“, schreibt er und betont: es sind neue Götter, denen gehuldigt wird“.1 Apollon, Diana, Merkur, Bacchus, Venus. Wenn es so ist, müssen die Hymnen, die auf diese Götter von Horaz gedichtet wurden, eine beson- dere Bedeutung haben. In meinem Beitrag möchte ich den Hymnus auf Bacchus behandeln, der sich im zwei- ten Buch der Oden befindet. Das zweite Buch hat eine besondere Eigenart: es ist das kürzeste, doch finden wir in ihm keine kurzen und keine langen Oden die kürzeste hat 20 Zeilen, d.h. 5 Strophen, die längste 40 Zeilen, also 10 Strophen. So ist in Hinsicht auf den Umfang das zweite Buch durch Zurückhaltung charakterisiert.2 Unser Hym- nus gehört mit 2, 17 (Ode an Maecenas) zu den mittellangen Oden des Buches: er hat 8 Strophen. Meiner Meinung nach ist es kein Zufall, daß dieser Hymnus eben in einem Buch zu finden ist, für welches das Ebenmaß und die Zurückhaltung charakte- ristisch sind. Obwohl die Meinungen der Forscher über den Aufbau des Gedichtes auseinanderge- hen, suggeriert auch die Struktur des Hymnus Ebenmaß und Harmonie. -

Emperors, Khalifs and Other Rulers (c. 500 – c. 1000) The Roman Empire and Its Northern Neighbours The great tradition of the law of war and peace did not end, even when thorough political changes occurred in the Mediterranean area and in West Asia during the period between the fifth and the seventh century. Already since the end of the third century, it had become difficult to govern the entire Roman Imperium from its capital city. Thus, next to Rome, up to four centres of government came into existence. They were in charge of districts with changing boundaries. Rulers over these districts had the title Imperator like the ruler residing in Rome; this Latin title was represented by basileus in Greek. Next to the imperial office, the ancient republican offices continued, most notably that of the consuls, even though they had few executive competences and little political clout any longer. Still, the Roman Imperium remained intact as an integrated state (civitas), based on the municipal law of the city of Rome and overarching the several districts. The most important of the newly emerging centres of government next to Rome was Byzantium (Constantinople), established under Emperor Constantine (312 – 337) on a peninsula extending into the Bosporus which separated Asia from Europe already in contemporary perspective. Up until the fifth century, political and administrative activities gradually shifted from Rome to Byzantium. At the same time, the Bishops of Rome, regarding themselves at successors to the Apostle Peter and using the title Pope (Papa or Pontifex maximus), expanded their control over the Christian church at large and converted the city of Rome from a secular into an ecclesiastical centre of government.
