El Bildungsroman Roquero En América Latina BASTARDOS DE LA MODERNIDAD: EL BILDUNGSROMAN ROQUERO EN AMÉRICA LATINA By ALEXANDER TORRES A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2016 © 2016 Alexander Torres To Giovanna, Alejandro, and Irene. My life has never been the same since. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I want to thank first and foremost my wife Giovanna Rivero. Without you, my life and this dissertation would not have taken their present shape. You have made both of them worthwhile. Thank you to my thesis director, Dr. Efraín Barradas, for his disinterested support and for having recommended to me two very important books that helped me to define my research: Refried Elvis by Eric Zolov and La modernidad de lo barroco by Bolívar Echeverría. Echeverría has revolutionized my critical thought and how to think about Latin America and modernity, among other things. Though he is no longer with us, I thank him as well. Thank you to Dr. Reynaldo Jiménez (Emeritus) who exposed me to the foundations of the Bildungsroman genre and sparked my interest to work with the genre and dig deeper into it. I would also like to acknowledge the importance of the formal and critical feedback that Dr. Luis Álvarez-Castro and Dr. Tace Hedrick have given me as well as their support. Thank you to Dr. Gillian Lord for always being so supportive and understanding. Without her support, I would not be writing this today. I am forever grateful. And though she is no longer at the university, I must thank Dr. Carina González who introduced to me and others here the latest avant-garde trends in Latin American literature and theory. Thanks to her, a door that will never close has been opened. I would also like to acknowledge what I know today thanks to Dr. Andrés Avellaneda (Emeritus), Dr. Geraldine Nichols (Emeritus), Dr. Martín Sorbille, Dr. Alicia Genovese, and Dr. Ignacio Rodeño. Thank you to Richard Phillips (retired) and Paul Losch at the Latin American and Caribbean Collection. Aside from helping me squeeze in a couple of extra books beyond the borrowing limit, they always provided me with helpful information and friendly chats. I must also thank a former colleague of mine, Gerardo Muñoz, for being a source of influence in my formation as a literary critic. Thanks to my friends Antonio Cardentey Levin, Antonio Sajid López Méndez, Antonio Gil, Nancy Gil, and Herlinda Flores. Without them, I never would have 4 survived this. I, of course, cannot forget my family: Herminio Torres (who gave me the gift of salsa), Pura Torres, Christopher Torres (who gave me the gift of rock), and Veronica Petrucci. They are my first tribe and their love and support have always been unconditional. I must not forget my second tribe: Denise, Sebouh, Oleg, Josh, Dom, Mike Shelley, Dave Choi, Dave Amato, Mike Rivera, Frank, Mike Chunusoff, Tom, and last but not least, Adrian. You helped make rock ’n’ roll more than just a listening experience. I must also include a tribe between the first and second: my aunt Jenny and my uncle Papo. Thank you for believing in me. Finally, I want to thank my extraordinary stepchildren, Luis Alejandro Antúnez Rivero and Irene Antúnez Rivero. Since 2010, my triumphs are no longer only mine. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ...............................................................................................................4 LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS ..........................................................................................................9 ABSTRACT ...................................................................................................................................10 CHAPTER 1 LA MODERNIDAD Y EL BILDUNGSROMAN ...................................................................12 ¿Qué es el Bildungsroman? I analyze practices of cultural consumption involving records in Medell¶³n,Colombia's second largest city and most important industrial center at the time. The study sheds light on some of the complex connections between two simultaneous historical processes during the mid-twentieth century, mass consumption and socio-political strife. Between 1930 and 1953, Colombian society experienced the rise of mass media and mass consumption as well as the outbreak of La Violencia, a turbulent period of social and political strife. Through an analysis of written material, especially the popular press, this work illustrates the use of aesthetic judgments to establish social di®erences in terms of ethnicity, social class, and gender. Another important aspect of the dissertation focuses on the adoption of music gen- res by di®erent groups, not only to demarcate di®erences at the local level, but as a means to inscribe these groups within larger imagined communities.

Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Simón Calle All rights reserved ABSTRACT Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle This dissertation analyses identity formation through music among contemporary Colombian musicians. The work focuses on the emergence of musical fusions in Bogotá, which participant musicians and Colombian media have called “nueva música Colombiana” (new Colombian music). The term describes the work of bands that assimilate and transform North-American music genres such as jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and blend them with music historically associated with Afro-Colombian communities such as cumbia and currulao, to produce several popular and experimental musical styles. In the last decade, these new fusions have begun circulating outside Bogotá, becoming the distinctive sound of young Colombia domestically and internationally. The dissertation focuses on questions of musical circulation, affect, and taste as a means for articulating difference, working on the self, and generating attachments others and therefore social bonds and communities This dissertation considers musical fusion from an ontological perspective influenced by actor-network, non-representational, and assemblage theory. Such theories consider a fluid social world, which emerges from the web of associations between heterogeneous human and material entities. The dissertation traces the actions, interactions, and mediations between places, people, institutions, and recordings that enable the emergence of new Colombian music. In considering those associations, it places close attention to the affective relationships between people and music.

This dance created was meant to symbolize the best of femininity in every way. The Belly Dance was a rite of passage for girls going into puberty, women about to get married or who wanted to get pregnant. The dance which started in the Egyptian temples long ago, made its way onto the streets of coastal Alexandria and Cairo. The dance would go both east and west by the Eighth Century, as the Arabs dominated with their Islamic Caliphate portions of the Middle East, Northern Africa and Southern Europe. The [Belly] dance or in French, ‘Danse du ventre’ would reach the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal & Spain) sooner than later, making an enormous impact/contribution in the Arabian-Moorish and Islamic cultures. The other influence were the Roma peoples, who left Northern India 1,500 years prior and immigrated in direction towards Spain.

Cumbia, Vallenato, Salsa, Rock. • Solamente La Mano De Dios Podrá Separarnos”: Preliminary Notes for the Untold History of Mexican Ranchera’S Hold on Colombian Popular Culture
“Solamente la mano de Dios podrá separarnos”: Preliminary Notes for the Untold History of Mexican ranchera’s Hold on Colombian Popular Culture Carolina Santamaría Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá While working on this text, I recalled a joke that circulated some fifteen years ago in Bogotá, a short story displaying upper-middle-class Bogotanos’ sardonic and quite snobbish sense of humor. It stated that Colombians didn’t exist, because the local aristocracy thought of themselves as Europeans, the whole middle class aspired to immigrate to Miami, and the lower classes had always been convinced they were Mexicans. Beyond the irony in it, this silly story ultimately acknowledges the enormous impact of Mexican popular culture in shaping Colombian culture, in addition to recognizing that local identity takes different shapes according to different viewpoints. The joke, however, gives no clue about why or how Mexican popular culture became so important for Colombians. In fact, when I began to work on the reception of Latin American popular music in Colombia during the mid-twentieth century (Santamaría 2006), I was quite surprised to see that no systematic study exists of the musical connections between Mexico and Colombia, while there are several studies on the influence of Cuban or Argentinean repertories in the country. Therefore, rather than pretending to trace back the whole process of contact and musical assimilation, I’ll piece together some fragments of the story and offer some clues. My article will raise more questions than provide clear answers about those musical interconnections. I will focus my attention on the reception of one particularly successful product of the Mexican cultural industry, ranchera music, taking as point of departure my work on popular music, social conflict, and identity in Medellín (Colombia’s second city) between the 1930s and 1950s.
