California State University San Marcos is pleased to invite applications for the Head of Special Collections in the University at the level of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian (tenure-track). The CSUSM Library, one of twenty-three in the California State University System, supports the campus’ mission to place the student as an active participant in the learning process. The Library works collaboratively with the campus community to provide a dynamic learning environment and experiences within and beyond the classroom as well as access to information needed to foster curiosity and scholarly inquiry. The 200,000 square foot Kellogg Library has five floors that include more than 40 group study rooms and 300 computers and is a gateway to more than 180 electronic databases and 550,000 books and e-books. DUTIES: The University Library at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks a visionary Head of Special Collections. This inaugural position will bring experience to lead the growth of a new special collections program at the CSUSM Library. Reporting to the Dean of the Library, the Head of Special Collections will provide leadership, guidance, and strategic direction to the newly-formed and community-engaged Special Collections Department. The department will be comprised of the Head of Special Collections, the Special Collections and History Librarian, the Ecke Archivist (a non-tenure track position focused on the processing of the foundational special collection), a library staff member, and student employees. Special Collections includes the University , the Ecke collection, and the BrewchiveTM, and is responsible for collecting unique materials that document the history of the CSUSM’s geographic region.

As a department head, the incumbent will serve on the Library’s leadership team and will facilitate communication and coordination with other departments in the Library. The Head of Special Collections will provide leadership in the development and ongoing sustainability of an emerging Special Collections department including planning, developing of policies and procedures, collection acquisition, description, processing, preservation, and digitization. The Head of Special Collections will prioritize outreach and curricular integration as important elements of the Special Collections program.

Specific Duties

• Provides vision and leadership in directing and managing the programs and operations of Special Collections. • Serves as the head for the Special Collections Department. Provides lead work direction for Special Collections unit. Makes recommendations to the Dean on department budget, staff, and facility needs. Represents the Special Collections Department on the Library’s leadership team.

• Develops programs and services to acquire, process, curate, and provide access to special collections in a variety of formats. • Facilitates discovery of and access to collection information through the development of EAD finding aids, the library website, and other avenues. • Provides leadership on issues surrounding collection access and digitization in collaboration with relevant Library stakeholders. • Takes responsibility for promoting and interpreting unique collections through innovative and engaging physical and digital exhibitions, educational programming, and social media. • Assists with grant development and fundraising efforts.

• Creates a sustainable program to support born-digital archives. • Pursues a strong research agenda within the field of special collections, digitization, academic librarianship, or job-related field. • Actively participates in library, university and/or professional-level service commitments. • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. Demonstrated experience supervising or directing the work of staff. Five years of professional experience working with the development, acquisition, management, and preservation of special collections. Knowledge and/or experience with archival collection management systems and technologies applicable for the special collections environment such as ArchivesSpace, Preservica, and Archivematica. Demonstrated understanding of descriptive systems and principles such as EAD, XML, national standards and archival ethics. Knowledge of cataloging and metadata workflows for special collections and archives materials. Demonstrated experience with digital preservation as it relates to archives and records management. Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate and work effectively within and across organizational boundaries in a diverse organization and with a wide variety of users. Ability to cultivate and sustain productive relationships with donors. Strong organizational and analytical skills with proven success in independently prioritizing work and managing competing deadlines. Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion under the Library's criteria for professional performance, scholarship and service. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated success in leadership of a special collections or similar unit within an . Evidence of successful grant writing. Experience with ArchiveSpace. Experience with space management for special collections storage and/or public access. Experience forging key alliances with faculty to integrate the use of special collections materials into student educational experiences. Knowledge of issues of security, confidentiality, intellectual property, and access rights. Experience developing, implementing or managing digitization projects. Published and/or presented on research related to special collections in academic libraries. Participation in local, regional or national professional organizations. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in professional performance, research, and/or service.
