Technical Communication Montana Tech 2019 ii Abstract I have taken a manuscript through the book publishing process to produce a camera-ready print book and e-book. This includes copyediting, designing layout templates, laying out the document in InDesign, and producing an index. My research is focused on the best practices and standards for publishing. Lessons learned from my research and experience include layout best practices, particularly linespacing and alignment guidelines, as well as the limitations and capabilities of InDesign, particularly its endnote functionality. Based on the results of this project, I can recommend self-publishers to understand the software and distribution platforms prior to publishing a book to ensure the required specifications are met to avoid complications later in the process. This document provides details on many of the software, distribution, and design options available for self-publishers to consider. The History of Science Collection o Which includes rare books related to scientific topics dating back to 1750. The History of Medicine Collection o Which includes rare books related to medicine and medical education dating back to 1600. The Special Book Collection o Which includes rare or unique books that require special care such as miniature books and 1st or limited edition books. Manuscript Collections o Which include letters, diaries, photographs and many other types of materials associated with important individuals, families or businesses. The best part about these collections is that they are here for you to use! However, many of the items in Special Collections are not only rare, but also fragile and need special handling. Because of this, we have to use them a little differently from the rest of the collections in Randall Library. New Traveling Exhibition from the Guild of Book Workers with 50 New Book Artists’ Work form Across the Country May 24, 2021 Contact Person: Jeanne Goodman Contact Email: [email protected] The Guild of Book Workers traveling exhibition will travel from June 2021 to September 2022. The opening and close dates for “Wild/LIFE” should be confirmed with each venue before travel and to check local public health precautions in place due to COVID-19. EXHIBITION “Wild/LIFE: Guild of Book Workers Triannual Exhibition”, June 2021 to September 2022 DESCRIPTION This exhibition features approximately 50 works by members of the Guild of Book Workers, an book artists organization that promotes interest in and awareness of the tradition of the book and paper arts by maintaining high standards of workmanship, hosting educational opportunities, and sponsoring exhibits. Members were invited to interpret the theme of “wildlife” in any way they wish, be it literal or abstract, humorous or serious. In a biological sense, wildlife describes the myriad of creatures sharing this planet, interacting and adapting, all connected to each other and their environment. "Wild" also describes an untamable essence that survives despite the constraints of society and culture. As craftspeople, knowledge of materials and keen observation of how they behave (and often how they refuse to comply) is an integral part of the practice of book making, and a reminder of how traditional bookbinding materials originate in nature. The exhibition opens at the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco, CA in June 2021, and will continue to travel to five additional venues across the country, closing in the fall of 2022. -

Library Assessment Plan San Jose State University Library Updated: May 30, 2017 PURPOSE OF LIBRARY ASSESSMENT Specific assessment goals encompass these three (3) key areas: 1. Services – Evaluating the library’s services for the highest value and impact to our researchers and learners 2. Spaces – Assessing the library’s physical and digital spaces for ways to support evolving learning and research behaviors 3. Collections – Evaluating the library’s collection in support of the University community’s teaching and learning goals, information needs, and return on investment IMPORTANCE OF THE LIBRARY ASSESSMENT At SJSU Library, it is important to conduct assessment in order to: ● Measure library contributions to the University’s mission, goals, and strategies (including SJSU’s Four Pillars of Student Success: College Readiness, Advising, Student Engagement, and Clearing Bottlenecks) ● Identify actionable recommendations for improvement of library resources, services, and spaces to ensure that we are providing what students and other users need ● Identify new resources and services for faculty, students, administration, staff and community partners. ● Identify whether existing resources and services that require considerable manpower and financial resources should be enhanced or continued. Educating the Academic Librarian as a Blended Professional: A Review and Case Study Professor Sheila Corrall Head of Department and Chair in Librarianship & Information Management University of Sheffield Introduction The challenges and opportunities facing academic librarians are continually changing as changes occur in the operating environment at both global and institutional levels. Key trends affecting their roles and skills include convergence of academic services, combining libraries with IT and/or other learning support services; awareness of information literacy and recognition of the teaching role of librarians; and a maturing role in institutional repository management and its suggested extension to research data management. The increasingly specialised nature of their work is reflected in the use of terms such as ‘para-academic’, hybrid librarian’ and ‘blended professional’ to highlight their boundary-spanning activities and identities. The challenges and opportunities facing professional educators are similarly fluid. Professional education for librarians has to anticipate changes and developments in professional tasks, roles and expectations, both at the macro level of the profession as a whole and the micro level of different library specialties. Education programmes must take account of standards set by national and international professional bodies, in addition to reflecting the realities of professional work in the sector. Programme content should also be informed by research in the discipline, enabling the academy to influence professional thinking and practice, contributing to the development and positioning of the profession. The challenges facing educators are significant, with some employers and graduates questioning the value of academic preparation for professional practice, while others see both initial and continuing education as a worthwhile investment, but want flexible tailored provision, not just a standard offer. -
