In Special Collections, you can find items like Rare and Special books, Manuscript Collections, Oral Histories, Maps and Art. Special Collections also has exhibits throughout the year showcasing unique items in our collection. Some of our collections include: The Southeast North Carolina Collection o Which includes books written about Southeast North Carolina or written by authors from the region. The History of Science Collection o Which includes rare books related to scientific topics dating back to 1750. The History of Medicine Collection o Which includes rare books related to medicine and medical education dating back to 1600. The Special Book Collection o Which includes rare or unique books that require special care such as miniature books and 1st or limited edition books. Manuscript Collections o Which include letters, diaries, photographs and many other types of materials associated with important individuals, families or businesses. The best part about these collections is that they are here for you to use! However, many of the items in Special Collections are not only rare, but also fragile and need special handling. Because of this, we have to use them a little differently from the rest of the collections in Randall Library. Hérubel HSSE, University Libraries, Purdue University Abstract: This exploratory discussion considers history of libraries, in its broadest context; moreover, it frames the entire enterprise of pursuing history as it relates to LIS in the context of doing history and of doing history vis-à-vis LIS. Is it valuable intellectually for LIS professionals to consider their own history, writing historically oriented research, and what is the nature of this research within the professionalization of LIS itself as both practice and discipline? Necessarily conceptual and offering theoretical insight, this discussion perforce tenders the idea that historiographical innovations and other disciplinary approaches and perspectives can invigorate library history beyond its current condition.

BROOKINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEE BYLAWS ARTICLE I - Name This organization shall be called "The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library" existing by virtue of the provisions of Chapter 14-2 of the South Dakota Codified Laws, 1975 revision and 1977 supplement, and exercising the powers and authority and assuming the responsibilities delegated to it under the said statute. ARTICLE II – Appointment of Trustees Section 2.03 of the Brookings City Charter requires that the Mayor shall appoint with the advice and consent of the City Council the members of citizen advisory boards, committees and commissions including the BPL Board of Trustees.1 A majority of the members shall be residents of the City. Members shall have a current library card in good standing. The City Clerk will post the call for BPL Board of Trustee applications and contact incumbents whose terms are expiring and inquire if they wish to be considered for reappointment. Normally only those who have filed applications will be considered for appointment. Trustees are encouraged to suggest that potential Board members apply. A book of filed applications is maintained by the City Clerk and will be available for review by the public.

Promotes library services to the community through outreach and bookmobile events. QUALIFICATIONS; • Design and implement programs for the bookmobile and outreach services. • Collection development: evaluate bookmobile collection; recommend allocation of materials budget to the Outreach Coordinator; select and weed library materials • Establish relationships with various organizations within the community to promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery. • Implements outreach programming, as needed, under the direction of the Outreach Coordinator. • Under the direction of the Outreach Coordinator, create, implement, and present programs for use in the library and in the community. • When assigned, assure that the bookmobile and equipment are in good working order. Resolve or report maintenance problems. • As assigned, drive bookmobile, assist with maintaining bookmobile. • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school. • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and proof of insurance are required. Must meet insurability requirements of the library’s insurance provider to operate the Bookmobile. • Work attendance will be considered.
