These primordial substances, which make possible all life on earth, are the subject of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes series. For over thirty years, Sugimoto has traveled the world photograph- ing its seas, producing a body of work that is an extended medita- tion on the passage of time and the natural history of the earth. Sugimoto has called photography the “fossilization of time,” and the Seascapes photographs simultaneously capture a discrete mo- ment in time but also evoke a feeling of timelessness. This volume, the second in a series of books on Sugimoto’s art, presents the com- plete series of over 200 Seascapes, some of which have never before been reproduced. All are identical in format, with the horizon line precisely bifurcating each image, though at times the sea and sky almost merge into one seamless unit. Each photograph captures a moment when the sea is placid, almost flat. Within this strict format, however, he has created a limitless array of portraits of his subjects. An essay by Munesuke Mita, Professor of Sociology at the University of Tokyo, examines contemporary art through a socio- logical lens, comparing the recent history of art with mathematical predictions of population growth. -

Yet in this case the photographer is Dennis Hopper and the photographs, remarkably, are never before published. Shot in Taos, New Mexico, where Hopper was based following the production of Easy Rider in the late 60s, the series was tak- en with disposable cameras and developed in drugstore photo labs. This clothbound collection documents Hopper’s friends and family among the ruins and open vistas of the desert land- scape, female nudes in shadowy interiors, road trips to and from his home state of Kansas and impromptu still lifes of discarded objects. These images, capturing iconic individuals, wide-open Western terrain and drug-addled fun, create a captivating view of the 60s and 70s that combines political idealism and opti- mism with California cool. Dennis Hopper(1936–2010) was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He first appeared on television in 1954, and quickly became a cult actor, known for films such asRebel Without a Cause (1955), Easy Rider (1969), The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986) and Hoosiers (1986). In 1988, he directed the critically acclaimed Colors. -

Here Meyerowitz looked at, touched, studied, and connected with the more than 250 objects that Morandi painted. Using only the warm natural light in the room, he photographed Morandi’s objects: vases, shells, pigment-filled bottles, silk flowers, tins, funnels, watering cans. In the photographs, each object sits on Morandi’s table, which still bears the marks the painter drew to set the positions of his subjects. In the background is the paper that the artist left on the wall, now brittle and yellow with age. Meyerowitz’s portraits of these dusty, aged objects are not only works of art themselves, but they offer insight into the humble subjects that Morandi transformed into his subtle and luminous paintings. Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) is a street photographer and portrait and landscape photographer. Personalization Guidelines Purpose Our personalization services are a very important part of the Thirty-One experience. We believe our personalization services set our products and our brand apart. Although we never want to disappoint you or our Customers, there are legal and policy limits to the personalization requests that we will fulfill. These Personalization Guidelines are intended to assist you in: • Helping our Customers understand what personalization requests we cannot fulfill; • Avoiding damage to the Thirty-One brand; • Avoiding the infringement of the trademarks of others; and • Reducing potential legal liability for both Thirty-One and our Customers. Our hope is that these Guidelines will help you to advise Customers of problematic personalization requests when Customers place their orders. Why Can’t Thirty-One Fulfill All Personalization Requests? Legal Reasons There are legal reasons why we cannot fulfill certain personalization requests. Sometimes companies (like Avon or Microsoft), sports teams (like the Cleveland Browns or the Ohio State Buckeyes), and famous people (like Jennifer Lopez) make a filing with the government to register their name, the name of a product (like Apple’s iPad) or a tag line (like Nike’s “Just Do It”). If we fulfill a request to personalize a Thirty-One product with a name or phrase that has been “trademarked,” then there is a risk we could face a legal claim for “trademark infringement.” Trademark infringement can occur when someone uses a name or phrase that causes confusion with someone else’s trademark. Here is an example. The word “Coach” could refer to a sports team’s coach or it could refer to the COACH brand of handbags. -

PALMIERI NEW YORK — America’s oldest retailer is jumping into the Indian market. Brooks Brothers Group has formed a joint venture with Reliance Brands Ltd. to open monobrand stores in India. Its current portfolio includes Ermenegildo Zegna, Thomas Pink, Kenneth Cole, Paul & Shark, Timberland, Diesel, British toy store Hamleys, Steve Madden, Superdry and Quiksilver. Its most recent deal was with Iconix Brand Group and its 25-plus labels. “We have partnered with Reliance Brands Ltd. be- cause of their passion for the Brooks Brothers brand, their track record with other premium brands, and their expertise and connections within India,” said Claudio Del Vecchio, chairman and chief executive offi cer of Brooks Brothers.
