138 Book reviews Philip Ford, Jan Bloemendal, and Charles Fantazzi, eds. Brill’s Encyclopaedia of the Neo-Latin World. 2 vols. Leiden: Brill, 2014. Pp. xliii + 1245, illustrations (some color). Hb, 395 Euros. Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606), the visitor to the Jesuit missionary enter- prise in the Far East, requested that Superior General Claudio Acquaviva (1543–1615) send him 600 or 800 copies of Lactantius (240–320) (probably The Divine Institutes, which Valignano himself had annotated) for use by Japanese seminarians. The first text that Valignano’s novice, Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), wrote to his literati audience in China was a treatise on friendship—an imita- tion of Cicero’s De amicitia. The first book published by the first printing press of the Jesuit Roman College, where Ricci was trained, was Martialis’s Epigrams, a pagan classic. It was edited by the Jesuit André des Freux (d. 1556) who— along with Jerónimo Nadal and Peter Canisius—was part of the group that founded the first Jesuit school in Messina. Robert Southwell, a poet and Elizabethan martyr, wrote in Latin before he wrote in English. His companion in martyrdom, Edmund Campion, was the author of several tragedies in Latin, which he composed during his tenure as a teacher of rhetoric at the Jesuit col- lege in Prague. Classical tragedies of Seneca, often used by Jesuit playwrights, were translated into English by a sixteenth-century English Jesuit poet, Jasper Heywood. The latter’s countryman—Gerard Manley Hopkins, the Victorian Jesuit poet and professor of classics—was the author of an English translation of Cicero’s De officiis. -

This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda. -

Before and After Suppression: Jesuits and Former Jesuits in the Polish-Lithuanian
Richard Butterwick (University College London) Before and After Suppression: Jesuits and Former Jesuits in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, c. 1750-1795 In some ways the Jesuits exercised more influence in the eighteenth-century Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth than anywhere else in Europe. Whereas elsewhere the Society of Jesus provided confessors and spiritual advisors to princes, in the Commonwealth it educated generations of nobles as republicans. The Jesuits ran more schools and colleges than all the other orders combined, and Jesuits were more numerous than any other single order. The research of numerous scholars has illuminated the multi-faceted activity of the Society of Jesus in the decades before suppression, allowing the revision of older verdicts on their supposedly pernicious cultural, political and educational role. This research is ongoing, but the present chapter will endeavour to synthesize some of it. It will first review the condition of the Polish- Lithuanian Jesuits in the last decades before suppression, and then consider some of the ways in which former Jesuits adapted to a variety of new roles within what was left of Poland-Lithuania. The Commonwealth was truncated by partition in 1772, reduced again in 1793, and its remnants were dismembered completely in 1795. Catholic Europe’s religious orders reached their ‘brim of prosperity’ in the middle decades of the eighteenth century.1 In East-Central Europe, the cup of monastic prosperity continued to fill throughout the 1750s and 1760s. This tendency certainly applies to the Society of Jesus in the Commonwealth. Following the announcement, but before the ratification of the First Partition, the papal nuncio to the Commonwealth, Giuseppe Garampi, carried out a thorough survey of its regular clergy. -

This translation is submitted to tlie public, as conveying- the Poet's meaning in tlie order of the versification, an undertaking of more difficulty in English, the terminations alone of verbs sufficing for good rhyme in Portuguese. In quantity the original varies as to the number of syllables—and in attempting an imitation in a different language—the employment of nearly as many cannot, he trusts, be objected to. Prom ten to twelve or even fourteen syllables occur in one line of the original, and thus, although ten syllables is the usual quantity in Ottava Rima when imitated in English—more has been required in translating here the lines of the Lusiad. -

A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Unit of History and Philosophy of Science, Faculty of Science University of Sydney March 2021 Utiles et Necessarias 2 Utiles et Necessarias 3 Utiles et Necessarias: Early Modern Science and the Society of Jesus Sister Mary Sarah Galbraith, O.P. This thesis treats of the contributions made by the Society of Jesus to Early Modern science, amidst the complexities of the post Reformation, post Copernican era. Its focus is the life and work of the Jesuit Christopher Clavius (1538-1612), the architect and founder of a mathematics academy at the Collegio Romano. Using extant correspondence, pamphlet, prefatory dedications and commentaries, I show that Clavius created a strategy to recruit and train Jesuit priests in mathematics to be exported throughout Europe and to remote missionary outposts. As a specially trained corps of priest mathematicians, the Jesuits used the truths of mathematics and the mathematical sciences to draw potential converts to the truths of faith and religious conversion. The approach was initially successful. As the scientific and religious culture shifted in the sixteenth century, however, reliance upon traditional sources of authority, knowledge and belief came under scrutiny. As priests and mathematicians who were invested in both sacred and secular realms, members of the Society struggled to adhere to the tenets of traditional natural philosophy and to promote the new sciences, for the purposes of religious conversion. The approach that substituted the truths of mathematics for the truths of dogmatic faith was intended to engender confidence. -

BIBLIOTECA UNIVERSITARIA DI GENOVA – PERCORSI TEMATICI UNIVERSALITAS & PERVASIVITAS IL COSTITUIRSI E DIFFONDERSI DELLA S.J. E SUOI ECHI (1540 - 1773) di A. Pisani Schede autori Contesto teologico e filosofico Caspar Schott Gaspar Schott (5 February 1608 – 22 May 1666) was a German Jesuit and scientist, specializing in the fields of physics, mathematics and natural philosophy, and known for his piety. Biography He was born at Königshofen[disambiguation needed] and died at Augsburg (or Würzburg, sources vary). In 1627 Schott entered the Society of Jesus. He studied first at the University of Würzburg but due to the Thirty Years' War he left the Holy Roman Empire, eventually finishing his studies at the University of Palermo. He studied under Athanasius Kircher, who was his mentor for many years. Around 1638 he returned to his native Augsburg, where he would live the remainder of his years. He corresponded with many researchers and inventors, like Otto von Guericke, Christiaan Huygens and Robert Boyle. Works Gaspar Schott's sketch of Otto von Guericke's Magdeburg hemispheres experiment. Schott was the author of numerous works from the fields of mathematics, physics, and magic. However, those works were mostly a compilations of reports, articles or books he read and his own repeated experiments; he has done little, if any, original research. Schott is most widely known for his works on hydraulic and mechanical instruments. His treatise on "chronometric marvels" is the first work describing a universal joint and providing the classification of gear teeth. Among his most famous works is the book Magia universalis naturæ et artis (4 vols., Würtzburg, 1657–1659), filled with many mathematical problems and physical experiments, mostly from the areas of optics and acoustics. -

Serving as the gateway to Spain’s lucrative Atlantic Empire for over two centuries, the city fashioned itself as an imperial capital, and natural successor to ancient Rome. Despite never serving as the official capital to the Spanish Habsburgs, civic authorities in Seville nonetheless expressed their city’s wealth and nobility through an excess of laudatory histories, artwork, architectural renovations, and regional patron saints. This dissertation first contextualizes Seville’s prominence by exploring how Phillip II’s refusal to establish a permanent capital in Madrid until 1561 promoted competition between many cities in Castile, all of which saw themselves as potential contenders for the future imperial court. As Spain moved into Atlantic territories, this competition helped fashion the urban organizational strategy for colonial settlement in the New World. As Seville was the most important city in Spain during the early modern period, the city greatly influenced the conceptualization and development of Spanish-American cities between the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries.
