Mark Lewisohn, the acclaimed Beatles author, aptly commented “No Hamburg, no Beatles”. The Beatles, some of whom were still minors in the beginning, spent two years in Hamburg, with only a few breaks in between. Here, they laid the foundations for their global career. Following their debut in 1960, the Beatles played in Hamburg more often than anywhere else in the world – with 300 concerts, five contracts with four different music clubs, and about 1,200 hours spent on Hamburg stages. Bolig The advent of this online discography is a continuation of record descriptions that were compiled by me and published in book form by Allan Sutton, the publisher and owner of Mainspring Press. When undertaking our work, Allan and I were aware of the work started by Ted Fa- gan and Bill Moran, in which they intended to account for every recording made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. We decided to take on what we believed was a more practical approach, one that best met the needs of record collectors.     KENTUCKY IN AMERICAN LETTERS Volume I BY JOHN WILSON TOWNSEND KENTUCKY IN AMERICAN LETTERS JOHN FILSON John Filson, the first Kentucky historian, was born at East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania, in 1747. He was educated at the academy of the Rev. Samuel Finley, at Nottingham, Maryland. Finley was afterwards president of Princeton University. John Filson looked askance at the Revolutionary War, and came out to Kentucky about 1783. In Lexington he conducted a school for a year, and spent his leisure hours in collecting data for a history of Kentucky. He interviewed Daniel Boone, Levi Todd, James Harrod, and many other Kentucky pioneers; and the information they gave him was united with his own observations, forming the material for his book. Filson did not remain in Kentucky much over a year for, in 1784, he went to Wilmington, Delaware, and persuaded James Adams, the town's chief printer, to issue his manuscript as The Discovery, Settlement, and Present State of Kentucke; and then he continued his journey to Philadelphia, where his map of the three original counties of Kentucky—Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln— was printed and dedicated to General Washington and the United States Congress. This Wilmington edition of Filson's history is far and away the most famous history of Kentucky ever published. Though it contained but 118 pages, one of the six extant copies recently fetched the fabulous sum of $1,250—the highest price ever paid for a Kentucky book. The little work was divided into two parts, the first part being devoted to the history of the country, and the second part was the first biography of Daniel Boone ever published.

Chiodo 36, La Spezia Fondazione Carispezia inaugurerà sabato 14 aprile (ore 18.00) presso i propri spazi espositivi la mostra “Astrid Kirchherr with the Beatles”, una retrospettiva che ripercorre la storia degli anni formativi dei Beatles nell’Amburgo del dopoguerra – i cosiddetti “Hamburg Days” – attraverso gli scatti della fotografa tedesca che non solo immortalò il gruppo negli anni iniziali della carriera, ma ne influenzò profondamente lo stile trasformandolo in quello che tutti oggi conosciamo. Fondazione Carispezia Via Domenico Chiodo 36 - 19121 La Spezia Tel. 0187 77231 – Fax 0187 772330 www.fondazionecarispezia.it L’esposizione, a cura di ONO arte contemporanea in collaborazione con Ginzburg Fine Arts, sarà visitabile fino al 17 giugno e presenterà una ricca serie di scatti, la maggior parte in bianco e nero: dal primo vero e proprio servizio fotografico del gruppo a momenti privati che ripercorrono la stretta relazione tra i Beatles e la fotografa, oltre che la storia di un luogo e un periodo fondamentale per la band che ha cambiato la storia della musica pop. Nell’agosto del 1960 l’impresario tedesco Bruno Koschmider scritturò i Beatles, una giovane band di Liverpool composta da John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Pete Best e Stuart Sutcliffe, per suonare rock’n’roll in alcuni dei club da lui gestiti sulla Reeperbahn, ad Amburgo. Una delle tante sere in cui suonavano al Kaiserkeller, andarono a sentirli la giovane fotografa Astrid Kirchherr – allora assistente del celebre fotografo Reinhart Wolf – e il suo fidanzato di allora Klaus Voormann.
