These sections consist of nonsense syllables, or vocables. Although lacking semantic meaning, such vocables often provoke the joining in of the audience or listening group. The use of these vocable sections can be seen to have evolved in both their physical (sonic) characteristics and their social use and function over time while still maintaining a marked presence in Scottish Gaelic music across many genres and generations. I briefly examine theories surrounding seist vocables’ inception, interview three practitioners of Gaelic song about seist choruses’ inception and evolving function, examine four songs dating from a period spanning 1601-2016, and relate my findings to Scotland’s constantly evolving social and political climate.

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

I read so many interviews with artists and I listen to a lot of public radio where authors and musicians and various creative people are constantly talking about their ideas. Everyone is so articulate and colorful. I'm feeling very run-of-the-mill. ACM: We were looking back over the newsletter you send out. It's very thoughtful and introspective and mentions a little background on each of you. What do you do to entertain yourself when you go to a town to do a show... atR: Well ... , the antidote for touring, for most of us, is seeking out antiquarian and rare edition bookshops where we can fill the gaps in our libraries ... We're fairly bookish people. Bookshops are the most popular haunts, but Brian enjoys wooing nubile girls, Ric likes to ... continued on page 6 selecting bands to interview: for example Over the Rhine was requested by several subscribers for an interview. X), has often been downgraded in accounts of political developments in Scotland over the past thirty years. For example, in The Scottish Nation 1700–2000, Tom Devine merely states: Rock bands like Deacon Blue, the Pretenders and Runrig were emphatically Scottish in style but nevertheless were able to convey their music to a much wider overseas audience. Runrig celebrated Gaelic culture in particular and Scottishness in general to a younger generation of Scots increasingly confi- dent in their own national identity.
