  • Daniel Amos and Me: the Power of Pop Culture and Autoethnography
Daniel Amos and Me: The Power of Pop Culture and Autoethnography ANDREW F. HERRMANN Nearly everyone I know has a relationship with something in popular culture, whether it is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, amassing The Astonishing X-Men comics, or collecting every version of every Star Wars movie. Relationships and pop culture: couldn’t that make an autoethnography? This is a short version of my relationship with a band, Daniel Amos. I am not in Daniel Amos. I don’t know the members of the band (although I am Facebook friends with them now). I first heard them in 1982 serendipitously. Or maybe it was destiny. Either way, they opened my eyes to the wonders, doubts, and excesses of my life, critiqued my faith, and brought me joy. I feel like I know them, and they me. Thirty-one years after first hearing them, I realize our relationship is one of the longest I have had. We grew up and are growing older together. Popular Culture Autoethnography? Pop culture and autoethnography: two terms seemingly at odds with each other. On the one side stands popular culture studies, with its interrogations of music (Albiez), television shows (Stern), video gaming (Dunn & Guadagno), movie genres (Carroll), characters (Herrmann, “C-can”) – including individuals who become “characters” (Herbig 133) – and its examinations of power and discourses in popular texts, broadly defined (Stern, Manning & Dunn). On the other side sits autoethnography, the narrative first-person examination of the self, used as a jumping off point to interrogate cultural practices (Holman Jones, Adams & Ellis). One examines culture and identity from the outside in, the other from the inside out.

  • Spectrum History W. Visuals
1980 – 2020 Celebrating 40 Years! Spectrum A&E Media 1980-2020 Celebrating 40 Years! Spectrum Productions was established in 1980 in Regina, Saskatchewan to provide multimedia resources for organizations working with students in Canada. A board of committed friends sacrificially stood behind Keith and Jenny Martin to help raise support and give direction to the work. Spectrum’s Roots The roots of Spectrum go back to 1970, when Keith, having graduated with a B.A. in psychology and a minor in philosophy from the University of Regina, spent time at L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. L’Abri was and still is a live-in student community founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer to explore answers to basic philosophical questions from a Christian worldview. 2 In 1971 Keith, Steve Archer and Art Pearson applied for and received a federal Opportunities For Youth grant for a summer project called Street Level: A Multimedia Culture Probe. Inspired by seeing 2100 Productions in the United States, they wanted to do something similar in Canada. With a budget of $8,800 they hired 8 students (Keith, Steve, Art, Gene Haas, Chris Molnar, Steve and Lorne Seibert, and Linda McArdell—and Henry Friesen for the presentation phase) at $1,000 each for 3 months of work. That left $800, and lots of borrowed eQuipment, to produce a 5-screen, 7-projector 80 minute multi-media presentation using contemporary music to look at what people were living for. 3 Some of the artists used in the production were Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkle, Strawbs, STREET LEVEL Steppenwolf, Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens, Moody Soundtrack (1971) Blues, Traffic, Chicago, Procol Harem, Black “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” - Pink Floyd (Ummagumma) “At the Zoo” - Simon & Garfunkle (Bookends) “I’ve Got a Story” - Gary Wright (Extraction) Sabbath, King Crimson, and Ford Theatre.

  • Christianity & the Arts, Wi
Christianity & the Arts, Winter 2000 The Magazine Christianity & the Arts Online Winter 2000 Homecoming Lyrics of Canadian Songwriter Bruce Cockburn By Brian Walsh At home in the darkness but hungry for dawn . Forgetfulness is the temptation of homelessness. Elie Wiesel puts it this way: "The one who forgets to come back has forgotten the home he or she came from and where he or she is going. Ultimately, one might say that the opposite of home is not distance but forgetfulness. One who forgets, forgets everything, including the roads leading homeward." This relation of home and memory is, of course, not alien to the Scriptures. Indeed, it is precisely forgetfulness that is seen to occasion the homelessness of exile, and it is memory that keeps the vision of homecoming alive while in exile. "Don't forget where you have come from, who led you out of slavery and who gave you this bountiful land," says Deuteronomy 8, lest you go into exile. And when exile does befall forgetful Israel, it is memory of Yahweh's past faithfulness - memories of Abraham and Sarah, Noah, David, indeed of creation and exodus - that funds the prophetic imagination and keeps alive the vision of homecoming. If home is a place of deeply rooted memories, then homelessness is a state of amnesia in which we forget who we are precisely because we forget where we come from. And as long as the amnesia holds, there is no way back, no homecoming. The themes of home, homelessness, and homecoming, together with the motif of memory, are ubiquitous in the lyrics of Canadian songwriter and performer, Bruce Cockburn.

PUNK AESTHETICS IN INDEPENDENT "NEW FOLK", 1990-2008 John Encarnacao Student No. 10388041 Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences University of Technology, Sydney 2009 ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Tony Mitchell for his suggestions for reading towards this thesis (particularly for pointing me towards Webb) and for his reading of, and feedback on, various drafts and nascent versions presented at conferences. Collin Chua was also very helpful during a period when Tony was on leave; thank you, Collin. Tony Mitchell and Kim Poole read the final draft of the thesis and provided some valuable and timely feedback. Cheers. Ian Collinson, Michelle Phillipov and Diana Springford each recommended readings; Zac Dadic sent some hard to find recordings to me from interstate; Andrew Khedoori offered me a show at 2SER-FM, where I learnt about some of the artists in this study, and where I had the good fortune to interview Dawn McCarthy; and Brendan Smyly and Diana Blom are valued colleagues of mine at University of Western Sydney who have consistently been up for robust discussions of research matters. Many thanks to you all. My friend Stephen Creswell’s amazing record collection has been readily available to me and has proved an invaluable resource. A hearty thanks! And most significant has been the support of my partner Zoë. Thanks and love to you for the many ways you helped to create a space where this research might take place. • LARRY NORMAN, JESUS ROCK, and an INTERVIEW with GREGORY ALAN THORNBURY Rupert Loydell Falmouth Univ
WEIRD RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS: LARRY NORMAN, JESUS ROCK, AND AN INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY ALAN THORNBURY Rupert Loydell Falmouth University Keywords: Christianity, Larry Norman, Jesus Rock, CCM, Religion 'Christian rock is a genre that exists to edify and make money off evangelical Christians. [...] A Christian band , on the other hand is just a band that has more than one Christian in it.' – John Jeremiah Sullivan (2012: 17-18) Although The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Popular Music (Stewart and Abraham 2017) contains chapters such as Michael J. Gilmour's 'The Bible and Popular Music' (67-76) and Ibrahim Abraham and Francis Stewarts' 'Punk and Hardcore' (241- 250), there remains little informed academic consideration of the Christian music genre, especially punk and post-punk. John J. Thompson's Raised by Wolves (2000) and Mark Joseph's The Rock & Roll Rebellion (1999) offer insider histories, whilst Andrew Beaujon's Body Piercing Saved My Life (2006) is an hilarious, sceptical exploration of 'the phenomenon of Christian rock', focussed mostly on the early 2000s. Gilmour 's Call Me the Seeker: Listening to Religion in Popular Music (2005) is interested more in religious sources and themes; the nearest it gets to post-punk is Anna Kessler's consideration of Nick Cave (79-94) and J.R.C. Cousland's discussion of 'God, the Bad, and the Ugly' in the work of Nick Cave and Polly Harvey (129-157). Better, is Jay R Howard & John M. Streck's Apostle of Rock (1999), which takes a more sociological approach to what it calls 'The Splintered World of Contemporary Christian Music' and considers the tensions between ideas of ministry, entertainment, art and business for Christian musicians.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

These sections consist of nonsense syllables, or vocables. Although lacking semantic meaning, such vocables often provoke the joining in of the audience or listening group. The use of these vocable sections can be seen to have evolved in both their physical (sonic) characteristics and their social use and function over time while still maintaining a marked presence in Scottish Gaelic music across many genres and generations. I briefly examine theories surrounding seist vocables’ inception, interview three practitioners of Gaelic song about seist choruses’ inception and evolving function, examine four songs dating from a period spanning 1601-2016, and relate my findings to Scotland’s constantly evolving social and political climate.
