Celebrating 40 Years!

Spectrum A&E Media 1980-2020 Celebrating 40 Years!

Spectrum Productions was established in 1980 in Regina, Saskatchewan to provide multimedia resources for organizations working with students in Canada. A board of committed friends sacrificially stood behind Keith and Jenny Martin to help raise support and give direction to the work.

Spectrum’s Roots

The roots of Spectrum go back to 1970, when Keith, having graduated with a B.A. in psychology and a minor in philosophy from the University of Regina, spent time at L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland.

L’Abri was and still is a live-in student community founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer to explore answers to basic philosophical questions from a Christian worldview.

2

In 1971 Keith, Steve Archer and Art Pearson applied for and received a federal Opportunities For Youth grant for a summer project called Street Level: A Multimedia Culture Probe. Inspired by seeing 2100 Productions in the United States, they wanted to do something similar in Canada. With a budget of $8,800 they hired 8 students (Keith, Steve, Art, Gene Haas, Chris Molnar, Steve and Lorne Seibert, and Linda McArdell—and Henry Friesen for the presentation phase) at $1,000 each for 3 months of work. That left $800, and lots of borrowed equipment, to produce a 5-screen, 7-projector 80 minute multi-media presentation using contemporary music to look at what people were living for.

3

Some of the artists used in the production were Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkle, Strawbs, STREET LEVEL Steppenwolf, Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens, Moody Soundtrack (1971)

Chapter I: Exploring Values and Beliefs (1980-88)

After completing an Honours B.A., a Master of Divinity degree, and marrying Jenny Milone in Nyack, N.Y., in 1980 Keith and a board of friends (Merv Hepting, Verlyn Wilson, Bill Hall, Jenny, and later Gary Nelson) founded Spectrum Productions Association in Regina, Saskatchewan as a nonprofit media organization exploring values and beliefs.

With a Canada Summer Youth Employment Program grant they hired 4 students, Karen Travis, Darrel Reid, Daryl McKinnon, and Daryle Niedermayer—all Darrels spelled differently(!) and then joined for a few weeks by Keith’s brother Darrell, also spelled differently.

Together with Keith, Jenny and Joanne Austring, they produced the first version of In Search of a Sun, a 3-screen, 9-projector multimedia presentation.

6 In 1981, with help from photographer Don Riggott from Minnesota, Spectrum produced Between Reflections: A Hard Look At an Eclipsed Sun, exploring the possibility that the God of Judeo-Christianity offers what we are looking for as an adequate sun to answer to and to belong to.

7 Here are the soundtrack lists for the original productions.

Spectrum’s original brochure explained why the name Spectrum was chosen: SPECTRUM . . . Examining the full range of what people believe in . . . Reflecting sights and sounds in a clear pattern and progression of thought . . . Shedding light on what it means to be human, made in God’s image. This is Spectrum.

A few years later, even as part of Inter-Varsity, the last line would be changed to “Shedding light on what it means to be human—physically, socially, spiritually.” That is what Spectrum’s brochures have said ever since.

8 In the fall of 1981 Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Alberta hired Keith and Jenny to show both productions in universities and colleges across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, based out of Calgary.

In January of 1982 Keith and Jenny and Spectrum moved to Toronto to work with IVCF Ontario under the leadership of Don Posterski. For 2 years Keith was also the IVCF staff worker at York University.

9 In the summer of 1982 Tom Balke helped strengthen the productions with his excellent photography. In 1983 Keith and Jenny took a break from Spectrum and travelled to Europe and Israel for the summer. In 1984, with help from John Sharp, Darrell Martin and Jill Jones, In Search of a Sun was updated and renamed In Search of a Sun: An Inquiry into Values.

10 Here is the soundtrack list for the 1984 version.

Besides showings all over Ontario, Spectrum toured Western Canada 4 times and the Atlantic provinces 5 times, with assistance from Jenny, Jon Fuller, Al Stuart, Barb Rudd and Mark Hill.

12 From 1981 to 1988 In Search of a Sun was shown over 500 times to nearly 100,000 people, and the sequel almost as many times. They were also shown at The Danforth Café in Toronto and The Banff Project in Banff, Alberta.

Serving on Spectrum’s Advisory Board during this chapter were Mark Henkelman, Tom Balke, Martha Krueger, Jo Yousif, Carolyn Martin, Gerald Vandezande, Bill Kinnon, and Artaj Singh.

Chapter II: Probing Social Concerns (1989- 2012)

IIA (1989-2002) Keith spent the fall of 1988 in Israel with his parents and came home to a period of separation from Jenny. They separated for 2 years and almost lost their marriage. But thanks to deep soul searching, personal and then competent marriage counseling, and Jenny loving Keith enough to give the marriage another chance, they got back together in 1990 and had 29 more years together! Jenny was a constant supporter throughout Spectrum’s chapters until she died of stage 4 ovarian cancer last year.

In 1989 Spectrum became Spectrum Artistic and Educational Media Association (Spectrum A&E Media for short), a nonprofit registered charity probing values, beliefs and social concerns, especially social concerns. While applying for charitable status Spectrum was able to operate as a project of Imago, a registered charity assisting Christians in the arts.

14 Using a scaled down format of 3 projectors on a wide screen, the first production in this format was Sorrow, Hope, Joy on the environment. In 1995 Joy was replaced with Take It Back and the whole presentation renamed Take It Back: Caring for Planet Earth.

[On the DVD: Following “Sorrow” by Pink Floyd and “Hope” by high school students, here is “Take It Back” by Pink Floyd.]

15 No More Turning Away: Caring about Hunger and Poverty was produced in 1996 and 1997.

[On the DVD: Following “On the Turning Away” by Pink Floyd and “Jackie Brown” by John Mellencamp, here is part 3, “No More Turning Away.”]

From 1990 to 2001, Spectrum gave 900 presentations of Take It Back and No More Turning Away, as well as Dear God: Barriers and Bridges to Faith—produced in 1993 and then put on hold because of Keith’s own spiritual journey. These productions were shown to 220,000 students and adults in 8 provinces.

16

Board members during this part of Chapter II included Bruce Clemenger, Tom Balke, Carolyn Martin, George Meisner, Gerald Vandezande, Jo Yousif, Brien Smith, David Cranton, Terry Gallagher, John Sharp, Lisa Smith, Ron Wight, Phil Taylor, Greg Allen, Andrew Chisholm, Nolan Lee, Richard Middleton, Glenn Boyes, James Puttick, Jon Fuller, and Marianne Karsh. Darrell Martin served as Art Director from 1995-2001.

17 IIB (2003-2012) From 2003-12, after Keith arrived at a more progressive or metaphorical understanding of faith, Spectrum began to explore spirituality in conversational settings, though not with a production until 2014.

For 2 years Spectrum experimented with SpectrumPlace in Toronto, where A New Kind of Believer, Reel Spirituality and Media That Matters were offered. Media That Matters was a monthly discussion on books like The Road Less Traveled, The Power of Myth, Honest to God, The Spiral Staircase, The God Delusion, With or Without God, The Shack, Orphans of Winter, and The Lost Symbol. Movies watched and discussed included Life as a House, K-Pax, Instinct, Shake Hands with the Devil, Shadowlands, Religulous, Charlie Wilson’s War, and Capitalism: A Love Story—offered first in Toronto and then in Wiarton.

Chapter III: Exploring Spirituality (2013-20)

In 2013 Keith wrote a book about his own spiritual journey called Seismic Shift: From God to Goodness.

In 2014 Spectrum produced Seismic Shift: Spirituality for the Rest of Us as a media companion to the book, especially for university and adult audiences.

[For DVD: Following “Dear God” by XTC and “I Still Believe” by The Call, here is “Coming Back to Life” by (you guessed it) Pink Floyd!]

22 So now Spectrum had 3 multimedia productions to offer.

After offering his book and the new multimedia production to progressive chaplains and religious education professors on 6 universities from London to Toronto, Keith decided to become a chaplain himself. From 2014-20 he served as a nonreligious chaplain at U. of Waterloo and U. of Guelph, sponsored by Spectrum A&E Media and St. John’s United Church in Wiarton, with Ed Laksmanis as his supervisor. This expanded Spectrum’s outreach in more depth on two university campuses. Under the label ‘Spiritual (i.e. Good) But Not Religious,’ he helped students discover meaning, purpose, belonging and identity with or without religion. HERE FOR YOU • Not religious? • Leaving a faith that no longer works for you? • Looking for someone to talk to about meaning, purpose, belonging, values?

23 In 2018 Keith reworked his book into a novel called Seismic Shift: The novel. In 2019 Jenny passed away from cancer, and in 2020 Keith decided to retire from campus work and from Spectrum. He will continue as a nonreligious chaplain and educator online one day a week under the name Good But Not Religious , through his website www.GoodButNotReligious.ca.

24 Board members during this chapter included Bev Garinger, Bonnie Jacobs, Paul Bruer, Bill McKenzie, Daryl Wark, Rob Ritchie, Sue Askin, Sally Johnson, and John Sharp.

Keith’s Chaplaincy Support Team in Kitchener/Waterloo consisted of Isobel McGregor, Larry Kelly, Tui Torre, Isobel Field and Colin McGregor, raising $10-15,000 a year towards Keith’s support and program expenses.

25 Thank you to everyone who helped with production, presentations, funding and administration over these 40 years of Spectrum’s life, promoting media arts in education and fostering values that enhance life!
