E Coimbra, Portugal E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract The old Tejo Power Station (known as Central Tejo) is a very good example of industrial and architectural heritage from the first half of the 20th century, comprising an impressive iron structure covered in brick. Its production ended in 1972 and in 1986 it was classified as an Asset of Public Interest due to its Industrial Archeological heritage importance. More recently it was renovated and integrated on the new Campus Fundação EDP as the Electricity Museum, in Belém neighbourhood, Lisbon. In 2010, EDP foundation decided to build a modern piece of architecture, the new Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, (MAAT), just on the adjacent east side of the Electricity Museum. Heritage buildings can be severely affected by nearby construction works and in the case of the Tejo Power Station, structural monitoring is paramount. During the construction of the new MAAT Museum, the nearby Tejo Power Station’s buildings required an adequate monitoring system that could both estimate spatial displacements and map the evolution of other type of deteriorations. This paper describes a combined monitoring system for the Tejo Power Station buildings, including terrestrial laser scanning, micro-geodesy, photogrammetry and GIS technologies. This system accomplishes on the one hand for a detailed characterization of the geometric changes and on the other hand allows for the mapping of the pathology on a spatial database along specific dates, thus from an evolutive point of view.

  • Case Study of MAAT and the Central Tejo, the Two Museum Sites of EDP Campus in Lisbon
    Abstract In light of the recent transformations of the society which threatened the financial sustainability of museums, identifying new managerial approaches for these institutions is urgent. Specifically, museums need to find new strategies to attract visitors and enhance their return intent. In recent years, the concept of edutainment has emerged, defined as the inclusion of gaming elements in educational contexts. This strategy, often implemented by means of interactive technologies, results effective in enhancing the learning and entertainment experience of the users. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the impact of edutainment technologies in museums. The research examines how edutainment technologies can help museums to achieve both their social and financial objectives. The research was based on the Case Study of MAAT and the Central Tejo, the two museum sites of EDP Campus in Lisbon. The development of the Case Study was supported by secondary data received from the museum personnel, by semi-structured interviews with visitors of the two museums and by participant-observation methods. As a result of the analysis, edutainment technologies were proven to effectively increase the visitors’ perceived learning, perceived entertainment, satisfaction and return intent. Thus, the conclusions confirm that edutainment technologies help MAAT and the Central Tejo towards the achievement of both their mission purposes and a strengthened financial situation. Through the Case Study, this dissertation contributes to suggest new strategic solutions for the financial sustainability of museums and holds important practical implications for museum managers and professionals in the cultural sector in general. We were also distinguished by Ethisphere as one of the most ethical companies in the world. On January 18, following a demanding and rigorous process, EDP Portugal was certified by Fundación MásFamília as a conciliatory company that promotes equality and family-friendly policies. The Group has therefore strength- ened its position in this area. In addition to EDP Portugal, Naturgás, HC Energia and EDP Renováveis have this certification. Also in 2013 the Group’s Diversity Policy was developed and published after EDP joined the Forum of Companies for Equality (IGEN), an initiative promoted by the Commission for Equality in Work and Employment. Some 1,700 employees participate in corporate voluntary actions, devoting a total of 13,506 hours to this cause and spurring the involvement of about 236 thousand people. Our priority is to manage, develop, support and promote the quality of life of our 12,179 employees so that they feel fulfilled, motivated and content. We know that productivity is directly related to the involvement of people who work and make organizations grow.
