What are textiles? A textile is a flexible material consisting of a network of Thread natural or artificial fibres (yarn or thread). We sometimes call them fabrics. Different strands of fibre Wool Natural fibres- Fibre sourced from plants or animals e.g. bamboo, jute, cotton. Artificial fibres- Threadlike material invented by human scientists e.g. nylon Textiles are formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting , tatting, felting, or braiding. felt knitting weaving braiding crochet tatting Let’s have a look at these fabrics: Cotton fabric Woollen fabric Denim Silk Linen Chiffon Felt Georgette Can you describe these fabrics? Add your own describing words. Cotton fabric soft light Summer- breathable friendly Woollen fabric warm bulky Lot of holes fuzzy Denim thick Tough/strong hard Looks good Silk soft Tricky to clean expensive smooth Linen comfortable crisp light Good- strength Chiffon Super light transparent stretchy shimmery Felt Light-weight warm thick Easy to cut Georgette strong Light-weight Rough to thin touch woollen Compare these 2 fabrics You may be able to find some cotton in your home. Which fabric would you use to make a t- shirt and which one would you use for blanket? Why? I would use woollen fabric for a blanket as it is warm and thick. I would use cotton fabric for a t-shirt as it is light and breathable. It will also be comfortable to wear. Activity: Today we are going to describe different materials. Example- your cardigan, t-shirt, trousers, socks etc. (Children learning at home can also describe a blanket, cushion covers, your favourite dress or t-shirt). Try to describe how it feels and what it looks like. Hint: This is my favourite t-shirt. It is made of cotton. It feels soft to touch. It is very comfortable to wear. It looks bright and vibrant to look at. It is summer-friendly. This is the curtain in my room. It is made of chiffon. It is thin, light and durable. It looks gorgeous and expensive. It keeps my room bright and airy. Choose two fabrics of your choice and describe them. Write a list of words to compare each fabric. (Think of how they feel, look ,their strength, and uses.) Cotton Felt Woollen Denim Georgette Silk Cotton-It is light and soft material which is breathable and easy to clean. It is a strong and durable fabric. It is easy to design into various things like clothes, bedding, bathrobes etc. Choose any two fabrics of your choice. Describe and compare the features of those two fabrics. Are the features the same? E.G Silk and wool are different because silk is smooth and wool is quite rough. Wool is similar to felt because it is fluffy and thick. Think about the features of the fabrics. Breathability, weight, durability, softness, thickness, smoothness, strength. Choose any two fabrics of your choice and explain its features. Also explain what it could be used for and why? E.G Denim is thick and strong. It would be good to make a jacket out of denim as it would last a long time and could be warn outside without getting damaged. Plenary How do you think fabric or textiles are made?
