Textiles Under Mughals
Chapter V Textiles under Mughals- The advent of the Mughal dynasty gave an undeniable boost to production of the up-market textile, as to other craft. Textiles are singled out for mentioned by Abul Fazl, the minister and biographer of Akbar (1556-1605), in his Ain-i-Akbari, compile in the 1590‟s as a subject in which the emperor took particular interest. Akbar favoured woollen garment – the chosen wear of Sufis (Muslim mystics) – „from his indifference to everything that is worldly‟ in preference to the richer stuffs. His penchant for wool is also indicated by the steps he took to improve shawl manufacture; especially in the relation to dyes and width of fabric.1 Ain-i- Akbari goes into fascinating details on the manner of classifying garments in the imperial wardrobe (toshkhana). The textiles were arranged according to the date of entry which was recorded, sometime with other information, on a label tacked on to the piece (practice which survived in provision toshkhana into the 20th century). Price, colour and weight were also taken into account. Within these boundaries, textile took precedence according to the nature of the day, astrologically auspicious or otherwise on which they were received. A further refinement took into account the colours, of which thirty five are listed in the order of precedence. Abul Fazl further records that imperial workshops had been set up in the cities of Lahore, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Ahmedabad, where the best of the local craftsmen were requisitioned to supply the needs of the court.2 Persian masters were brought in to teach improved techniques.

The dyes under study include, basic dyes, acidic dyes, azo dyes, mordant dyes, and vat dyes while the fabrics are cellulosic materials, wool fabrics, nylon 6,6 fabrics, nylon 6 fabrics, silk fabrics and polyester materials. The principle of adhesion proposed leading to the fastness of the colourants is illustrated by the bonding of atoms and molecules arising from intermolecular interactions between functional groups of the dyes and the substrate materials. The functional groups involved are hydroxyl group (-OH), carboxylic group (-COOH), carbonyl group (=C=O), imino group (-NH-) ester group (- COOR), amide group (-CONH2) as well as conjugation in aromatic groups. The types of bonding proposed are ionic, covalent, dative covalent, dipole-dipole forces, and inter molecular hydrogen bonding. The study also shows that adhesion may be enhanced by physical entrapment of the colouring molecules on the substrate. Keywords - adhesion, entrapment, bonding, functional group, fabric and dye I. FROM CONCEPT TO CREATION: A DIGITAL TEXTILE PRINTER TO AID IN THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Dr. Sherry Schofield Dr. Jessica Ridgway Retail, Merchandising and Product Development – College of Human Sciences PROJECT DESCRIPTION The proposed funding from the Student Technology Fee will be used to purchase a wide- format digital ink-jet fabric printer which will provide students the unique opportunity to print their own developed creative ideas using this cutting edge textile printing technology. Our goal with this project is to further integrate current industry technologies into the Retail, Merchandising, and Product Development (RMPD) course curriculum. Within the textile and apparel industry, when a new product is being developed, often the designer is forced to use the available prints that were designed by someone else. This process can limit the designer’s ability to create a truly unique product or garment and to the designer is not able to design from initial concept to final product. Today’s technology is changing this process; with the introduction of digital textile printers, designers can take part in the entire product development process starting with textile design. With the incorporation of a digital printer and the accompanying software into the RMPD textile lab, our students will have the ability to experience a similar concept to product process with the creation of his or her own sample fabric, which could ultimately result in new and unique products. Furthermore, the use of a digital textile printer affords students the ability to incorporate technology into the product development process. This not only emulates current industry practices, but also allows for further exploration in product development.

Weaving and knitting are the most common fabric construction methods. Other methods include non-woven fabrics such as felting, laminating and bonding. As you know India is a diverse country and has 29 states and 7 union territories. Every state has their own diverse language and traditional attire. We even have diversity in religion maximum people following Hinduism and the rest being Islam, Christianity and Sikhism; leave aside the other tribes which have their own traditional attire. Living in such a diversified country it is difficult to write about the entire traditional clothing, but here I will just try giving you a glimpse of the same. For men, traditional clothes are the Achkan/Sherwani, Bandhgala, Lungi, Kurta, Angarkha, Jama and Dhoti or Pajama. Additionally, recently pants and shirts have been accepted as traditional Indian dress by the Government of India. In India, women's clothing varies widely and is closely associated with the local culture, religion and climate. Traditional Indian clothing for women in the north and east are saris worn with choli tops; a long skirt called a lehenga or pavada worn with choli and a dupatta scarf to create an ensemble called a gagra choli; or salwar kameez suits, while many south Indian women traditionally wear sari and children wear pattu langa. Saris made out of silk are considered the most elegant. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is one of India's fashion capitals. In many rural parts of India, traditional clothes is worn.
