It focuses on the way in which Freud divides fear and envy between the sexes, allocating the emotion of (castration) fear to men, and that of (penis) envy to women. On the one hand, the problems of this construction are pointed out, but on the other hand, it is shown that even a much-maligned myth may still provide food for thought. Then, four critiques of Freud which have been articulated by prominent feminist psychoanalysts — Karen Horney, Nancy Chodorow, Luce Irigaray, and Jessica Benjamin — are presented, as well as the alternative visions of sexual identities which these thinkers have developed. -
The Feminism and Foucault Debate: Stakes, Issues, Positions
Chapter 1 THE FEMINISM AND FOUCAULT DEBATE: STAKES, ISSUES, POSITIONS eminists disagree about the usefulness of Foucault’s work for feminist theory and practice. Some feminists advocate a Foucauldian feminism, while others Fargue that the underlying assumptions of feminism are antithetical to Fou- cault’s theoretical framework.1 The question about whether or not Foucault’s work is useful for feminism is situated within the larger debate about the com- patibility of a postmodern approach with an emancipatory, progressive politics.2 Proponents of postmodernism see it as essential to a progressive politics. They claim that traditional notions of political unity, rights, and freedom carry norma- tive implications that foreclose certain questions about who is included in the po- litical process and that this foreclosure may result in systematic exclusion. Proponents of progressive politics, on the other hand, claim that postmodernism undermines the very possibility of a progressive, emancipatory politics mainly be- cause of its rejection of normative concepts.3 In an article entitled, “Why Post- structuralism is a Dead End for Progressive Thought,” Barbara Epstein claims, “the underlying assumptions of poststructuralism conflict with the assumptions that are necessary for radical politics.”4 Epstein is particularly concerned with feminist poststructuralism, which she claims is amoral and “is a campaign against the basic structures of thought and language.”5 She is not alone in her condem- nation of poststructuralism. PSYCHE AND HISTORY IN SHELLEY AND FREUD A Thesis Presented to The Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts English by Brent Robida May 2009 Accepted by: Dr. Brian McGrath, Committee Chair Dr. Lee Morrissey Dr. Art Young ABSTRACT The comfortable thought is over in our psychical relation to Percy Shelley and Sigmund Freud because the line of reasoning it invokes is chaotic, if only because trying to define psyche and history leads to chaotic conclusions, especially at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Shelley and Freud recognized this and were able to channel it into their art, myth, fable, allegory. The events of their lives, their History, produces itself from chaos (Freud writes across two World Wars, Shelley under the shadow of the French Revolution, Jacobin massacres and Napoleonic wars), which means its producer is chaotic, Divine Chaos, Miltonic Chaos, but chaos it still remains. There is no systematic order to their thought except that systematic order escapes all Thought, true thought, at least. -

She inherited these gifts from her mother, Metis, who carried her to full maturity within the body of her father, Zeus, from whose forehead she was delivered, armed for battle. In this guise she serves as representation for the identities created and conveyed in the discourses of American women servicemembers. This study presents a grounded theory analysis of 99 narratives collected from personal interviews and culled from published sources in which women describe and interpret their experiences as enlisted personnel in the U.S. military. This method, discovered in the 1960’s by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss, studies narrative content to discern an emergent theory from that data. Recent renovation of this method by Kathy Charmaz, Adele E. Clarke, and others allows for this theory to align with existing ideas, if relevant and not imposed on the data a priori – which led to the feminist sophistic design of this Athena study, the terms derived from the work of classicist Susan Jarratt and defined by values within the narratives themselves. -

By Stephan Atzert The University of Queensland Introduction In Schopenhauer's philosophy a model of the unconscious is conceptualised, developed into an aesthetic theory and – among other trajectories – set in relation to his appreciation of Indian religious thinking. Despite the fact that Schopenhauer's ideas do not hold a place in the current philosophical canon which would be comparable to that of Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche, they have been very influential. In order to trace the scope as well as the impact of Schopenhauer's model of the unconscious, this article discusses Schopenhauer's reception by Sigmund Freud, as well as parallels between Schopenhauer and Buddhism. The topic of liberation from suffering provides a thematic focus for our enquiry, which ranges from Freud's eclectic use of the term nirvana to Schopenhauerian and Buddhist conceptualisations of liberation and of aesthetic appreciation. It will be shown that Buddhist concepts are helpful to critically understand Schopenhauer's ideas, just as the texts of Schopenhauer serve to historicise Freud's theories. Even though the bases of the two comparisons differ significantly, Schopenhauer's comprehensive and systematic description of the human experience provides their unifying framework. Schopenhauer's concepts were a decisive and largely unacknowledged influence on Freud's metapsychology. This will be outlined in “Schopenhauer and Freud”, the next section, followed by a discussion of Freud's use of the term “nirvana principle”, which led de Silva to believe that “in the philosophy of Schopenhauer may be present, a link between Buddhism and Freud” (de Silva, 1973, 187). -

Supervisor Pero, Allan The University of Western Ontario This dissertation/thesis is available at Scholarship@Western: https://ir.lib.uwo.ca/etd/6961 Abstract Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory of the “sinthome” and Friedrich Nietzsche’s tragic philosophy of self-overcoming are deeply complementary theories of linguistic subjectivity, each describing the transformative potential of a kind of art at the centre of the inherently symptomatic experience of language. Lacan’s final seminars reimagine the psychoanalytic symptom as the potential site where each subject might forge a sinthome: a singular structure of creative agency in the experience of desire and truth. Nietzsche’s tragic philosophy works to uncover the problematically aesthetic and creative character of reality, suggesting that one must affirm and cultivate such creativity in order to overcome the tragic character of existence.
