• East Prussian Marpingen? Marian Apparitions in Comparison
ZGAE 59 (2015) ARTICELS Swetlana Fink, Dietrichswalde: East Prussian Marpingen? Marian Apparitions in Comparison Just as Marpingen was called the ”German Lourdes” by contemporaries so was Dietrichswalde called the “East Prussian Marpingen”. Since the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes in 1858 dozens of Marian apparitions throughout Europe have been reported. Against this background, the article compares the two pilgrimages in the western and eastern border territories of Prussia. Methodologically, the treatise refrains from theological argumentation. It is rather committed to studies of social and cultural history with their socio-historic analytical categories like power, class, status, gender. The apparitions in Dietrichswalde are typologically similar to other Marian apparitions in Central Europe in the 19th century. Yet, the differences and specific qualities must not be overlooked. The visionaries of Dietrichswalde belonged to a minority speaking a Polish dialect in Southern Warmia. They were strongly influenced by Polish national piety. During the “Kulturkampf” (culture struggle, culture clash) the Warmian Poles were challenged by the Prussian government to defend their claim on language. Prussian authorities had dissolved Lonk Monastery in West Prussia of former Prussia belonging to a royal Polish part of the country. The visionaries hoped for a restoration of the monastery by the Virgin Mary. Into the present, especially since the time of the Polish millennium in 1966 and after the approbation of the apparitions by the Polish church in 1977, the sanctuary of Dietrichswalde remained an often visited destination of pilgrimage. It had a similar political function for the German church when, in the thirties, Bishop Maximilian Kaller made it a centre of religious demonstrations of Germans and Poles against the oppression by Nazism.

  • 13 Cassubian
DEMO13 : Purchase Cassubian from www.A-PDF.com to remove the watermark Gerald Stone 1 Introduction Cassubian (or Kashubian) is today spoken in an elongated band of territory to the west, north-west and south-west of Gdańsk (German Danzig) (see map 13.1). Since the Second World War the entire Cassubian speech area has been situated inside the Polish state. From the official point of view Cassubian is a Polish dialect; but its individuality is such that it is usually regarded by both laymen and linguists as an entity, separate from all other Polish dialects. Genetically, Cassubian is the last surviving link in a chain of dialects which once stretched across what is now north Poland and north Germany, linking Polabian to Polish. The Lechitic group consists of Polabian (west Lechitic), Polish (east Lechitic) and a chain of central Lechitic dialects (including Cassubian). The term Pomeranian is narrower: East Pomeranian is Cassubian; West Pomeranian refers to those extinct varieties of central Lechitic which were once spoken to the west of Cassubian. Toponymical evidence indicates that Cassubian was once spoken as far west as the River Parsęta (German Persante), which flows into the Baltic at Kołobrzeg (German Kolberg). The question has been frequently asked whether Cassubian is not really a separate Slavonic language rather than just a dialect of Polish. If the answer to this is yes, it implies a further question as to the existence of a separate Cassubian nationality. There are no known linguistic criteria for the resolution of such questions, but it is, in any case, clear that the question is not purely linguistic.

  • Articles (.Pdf)
Foreword By Tanel Kerikmäe, Jean Monnet professor, International University Audentes I am delighted to have a chance to introduce this peer-reviewed collection of articles, another milestone on the road of academic activities of International University Audentes. This interdisciplinary edition with a comparative nature takes a critical look at the problems arising in the context of being member of the European Union, embracing the contributions from various authors with distinct academic and professional background. The current edition includes not only significant academic research (mostly in the field of business, sociology and to some extent in law), but also essays and commentaries (social science in general and political thought). Somewhat different style and aims of various authors benefit the main goal of this set of presentations: to be exciting reading material to as many readers as possible, including not only representatives of academic world but also practitioners and public at large. Half of the papers were initially presented at the 5th annual international Spring Conference of International University Audentes: “Europe’s Role the World and the Future of European Union: enlargement – two years on” (2006). Others present the successful results of our call for papers for this collection among the cooperation partners of the Institute for European Studies and International University Audentes. 5 Despite of eclecticism, one of the common keywords prevailing here is seeking for “identity”. The search for a coherent playground is the joint expectation of different but co-existing worlds: business, politics, social relations and law. I myself, as a legal scholar, have been analyzing the recent ultimate goal of European Union's legal identity – the process of adoption of the constitutional treaty.

STIRRING THE POT IN POLAND: TRADITIONAL PLUM JAM, REGIONAL IDENTITY, AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE LOWER VISTULA VALLEY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Olivia Margit Hall August 2012 © 2012 Olivia Margit Hall STIRRING THE POT IN POLAND: TRADITIONAL PLUM JAM, REGIONAL IDENTITY, AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE LOWER VISTULA VALLEY Olivia Margit Hall, Ph.D. Cornell University 2012 This dissertation uses Polish Plum Jam from the Lower Vistula Valley (Powidła Śliwkowe z Doliny Dolnej Wisły) as a case study of a regional food product seeking a geographical indication from the European Union (EU). Thereby it serves as a lens onto the seemingly contradictory nature of the EU’s different policies: harmonizing and standardizing on the one hand, particularly in the area of food and agriculture; and promoting “diversity” on the other, whether in food, languages, or regional identities. This neoliberal project of defining sellable “identities” and “traditions” plays out in the lived experience of EU citizens, leading to negotiations and conflicts over the definitional ownership of these concepts. Here existing local social conditions and hierarchies come to bear. Whether teachers define a regional identity to imbue in their impoverished students or producers debate the authenticity of different jam making practices in order to register their product for a special designation, some voices are privileged while others are silenced. Advantages of cultural and social capital give a regional elite the upper hand in these negotiations. Thus the EU’s attempt to promote diversity in the area of traditional food products has an ambivalent effect.

  • Acta 109.Indd
ARCHIVE Stanisław Ossowski, 1897–1963, was one of the most versatile and infl uential fi gures in Polish sociology. His lifetime interests revolved around the issues of nation, but his output in the fi elds of theory of aesthetics and social classes is more extensive. Can one refer to a theory of nation by Ossowski? Of the six meanings of ‘sociological theory’ dis- cerned by Robert Merton,1 Ossowski’s approach was closest to explication of notions, which he deals with in his best-known text in the fi eld of national studies, Analiza socjologiczna pojęcia ojczyzny [A socio- logical analysis of the notion of homeland], with his proposed defi nition: A certain territory may become a homeland only if there occurs a group of people who relate to it in a certain fashion, and shape its image in a certain manner. … Homeland only exists in the subjective reality of social groups.2 Let us note that such defi nition is groundbreaking as it precedes the classical Benedict Anderson’s defi nition of nation as imagined community.3 Within the same essay, Ossowski has differentiated between private and ideological homeland. This contribution has been refl ected in his pioneering 1947 essay dealing with the issues of regional and national bond in Opole Silesia, published in this issue of APH for the fi rst time in an English version. One of the few studies this sociologist founded on fi eld research, this treatise originally crowned a series of Polish monographs on nation.4 Ossowski has identifi ed a few key subjects that made attempts at mobi- lising favourable attitude of the respective communities toward a national ideology: primarily, the German state and the Polish state.

  • Voivodship Self-Government As a Creator of Regional Development and Its New Identity on the Example of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland
Voivodship self-government as a creator of regional development and its new identity on the example of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland - Szymczak skie, [email protected] skie, [email protected] Abstract The aim of these considerations is, firstly, to pay attention to the role of local self- government at the voivodship level as a creator of regional development in Poland. Secondly, an indication of how the above function may be a useful tool for the reconstruction or creation of the region's cultural identity, after the destruction made in this sphere in the period when Poland was not existing as a result of the partitions (1795-1918), and during the communist dictatorship (1944) - 1989). The above analysis will be made on the example of the present Polish Kuyavian- Pomeranian Voivodeship, which is the area where various cultural and civilization traditions meet. For this reason, it is an interesting example of modern transformation processes and can, from this point of view, become an interesting point of reference for regions facing similar experiences in different parts of the world.
