2 2013 1st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AVU Preconference Program: Wednesday 20th November

Registration TIME: 08:00am – 05:00pm Room: FOYER (Mara Ballroom)

Workshops Workshop 1: Leveraging Institutional Open Practices to Promote Access to Education Time: 09:00 -11:00AM Room: MARA NORTH

Facilitators: • James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning, College of Canyons, and President of the Advisory Board for the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources • Kathleen Ludewig Omollo, International Program Manager, Office of Enabling Technologies, University of Michigan Medical School

Workshop Description: This proposed workshop will guide participants in examining the policy environment and organizational culture desired for effective open education activities, including identifying and addressing relevant policies at the departmental/faculty, institutional, national, or association level (such as for recognition, promotion, intellectual property, quality assurance, etc.) that can either support or hinder the goal of increasing access to educational experiences. This formal and informal policy environment is a common area of interest for many educators and institutions that are curious about or are currently pursuing open education activities. Drawing from case studies from a two-year community college in the U.S., an undergraduate and post-graduate research university in the U.S., and a regional network of health sciences institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, the facilitators will present a framework for understanding own organizational culture, and for identifying opportunities for open practices within that institutional context.

Workshop 2: Participatory Digital Multi-Media Content Development Strategies Time: 09:00 -11:00AM Room: LOITA

Facilitator: Robert L. Jones, II, Executive Director, OnLine Africa Knowledge Foundation

Workshop Description: This presentation will explore how the OnLine Africa Knowledge Foundation’s websites are using multimedia training and services to facilitate development of quality culture-specific education, better governance, and reliable public information services through a network of “digital fifth estates” which are collaborations between the public sector, private citizens, researchers, professional journalists, universities, community journalists and a network of village think tanks. The session will focus on participatory photography’s ability to help aspiring multimedia storytellers, photographers, digital designers and editors acquire or improve their ability to create, appreciate and evaluate images that have

3 2013 1st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AVU commercial and practical developmental value due to their universal “readability” (technical, aesthetic and communications factors) coupled with the ability to present culture-specific data visualizations in compelling ways. Most attendees should notice an immediate improvement in their ability to take and utilize images as a result of the session’s training modules. Attendees will be able to explore compelling hyper local and interactive digital solutions that can be readily adapted to meet the growing need to communicate “tactile” visual data and other types of accurate word, picture and sound information for consumers, multidisciplinary researchers, media practitioners and learners. Participants will be introduced to effective practical training programs and other resources that can help Africans tell their own stories better.

Workshop 3: Open Education Resources and the Impact of Open Education Policy Time: 02:00 -04:00 PM Room: MARA NORTH

Facilitators: Griff Richards, PhD, Manager, Educational Technology & Learning Resources, African Virtual University, James Waciira, African Virtual University

Workshop Description: A key principle underlying the effective collaborative development and sharing of AVU modules is the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). “Open” means the educational resources can be freely re-used and adapted by others without any fee. AVU policy is that Phase I and Phase II instructional modules be distributed under the Creative Commons License (CC) with provisions that users acknowledge the original authors (CC-BY), and that any adaptations of the AVU content be shared using the same CC license (CC-SA). In the past two years, almost 2 million user accesses have been made to the AVU on-line open resource collection (oer.avu.org), many from South America, North America, Europe and India. The exposure of quality learning materials for free bring AVU and its community and sponsors tremendous global recognition, and a number of awards have already been received. However, the movement to open education resources is only beginning and many potential users in partner institutions and the general public are unaware of the existence of AVU OER and do not know how to find and access these materials. The goal of this session is to give participants to an awareness of what OERs are and to introduce them to the AVU OER collection. At the end of the workshop the participants should be able to search for OER on the AVU repositories or on AVU DVD collections, they should understand the licensing provisions of Creative Commons Licensing, and they will be able to aware of the range and format of AVU modules. The second half of the workshop discusses the various types of OER licenses available under Creative Commons, and other Open Source schemes. The focus then shifts from the resources to the impact OER participation on the individual faculty member, the benefits to the institution, particularly for education in developing countries.
