Introduction

Industrial Psychology Consultants (Pvt) Ltd carried out a survey to gauge the perceptions of employers with regard to the quality of graduates coming out of local Universities. The survey targeted Human Resources Professionals specifically and extended the invitation to other senior managerial roles. These participants were chosen for their experience in recruiting and selecting graduates from local universities and also for working with the graduates. The human resources professionals were also chosen because they are informed by line managers in cases were graduates hired fail to deliver value.

The survey comprised of 103 participants representing 103 organisations from different economic sectors. Most of the participants were from the human resources profession (78%) with the remainder coming from other senior managerial professionals such as Finance Director, Engineering Manager and Head of Marketing.

Summary of Key Findings

 Graduates from state universities were rated higher than other universities.

 On commercial graduates, tops the rankings followed by NUST and

MSU.

 On sciences/STEM the National University of Science and Technology tops the rankings followed

by UZ and HIT.

 In the social sciences, UZ tops the rankings followed by MSU and .

 On work ethic, NUST tops the list followed by UZ and MSU.

 A further analysis of university graduates based on aptitude tests taken through graduate

recruitment shows that HIT graduates have higher General Mental Ability tied with NUST with

UZ following.

 In the same analysis we noted that graduates from GZU and BUSE scored the lowest in a test of

Verbal Reasoning (Verbal reasoning is the ability to understand and logically work through

concepts and problems expressed in words. Verbal reasoning tests tell employers how well a

candidate can extract and work with meaning, information and implications from text. It is all

about logic expressed verbally.) This may imply that graduates scoring low on verbal reasoning

may find it difficult to express themselves verbally. This is likely to affect the quality of what they

produce in writing.

 HIT ranks high on the personality dimension “Openness to Experience” People who score low on

openness tend to be conventional and traditional in their outlook and behavior. They prefer

familiar routines to new experiences, and generally have a narrower range of interests. Openness

has moderate positive relationships with creativity, intelligence and knowledge. CUT ranks

lowest on this dimension.

 Taking the results of the Employer perceptions on graduates and graduate trainee entry test

performance it seems HIT enrols quality graduates followed by NUST and UZ.

 The results show that Universities need to pay attention to the quality of graduates they are

producing to enable the graduates to be absorbed by industry. Employer perceptions matter in

recruitment. Universities that ignore these results may end up failing to attract quality students.

Conclusions and Recommendations

 While the sample size in not big enough to enable generalisation of these results it is a starting

point for those interested in researching in this area. Universities should not just focus on number

of students enrolled they need to start enrolling quality students. This cannot be achieved through

focusing on A Level points alone. Tests of General Mental Ability can help Universities if they

want to get quality students, which will lead to quality graduates. It is important to note that

General Mental Ability tests, assess your mental horsepower minus your effort. What you

normally get at A Level is a combination of effort plus general mental ability. However, you can

also get people who are not gifted, passing A Level due to effort but may struggle when now

doing a degree program.

 Employers are more concerned with getting quality graduates who have potential to be molded

into senior managers in the future. This seems not to be in line with universities now that seem to

focus more on quantity versus quality. Universities must be measured based on the number of

their graduates who are absorbed into industry /employed within 1 year of graduation. This is a

proxy measure for the quality of graduates produced. In 2013 in a study to gauge how long

graduates were taking without testing any form of formal employment we found that they were

going for an average of 7 years without testing any formal employment. That is a sad development

for Zimbabwe.

 Can Universities be persuaded to focus on quality of graduates instead of quantity? This is

something that needs national debate to guide higher education development.

 On the other hand, we need more polytechnics than Universities. Polytechnics produce hands on

employees who can fix things. While Universities are focusing on producing managers, the trend

in the past few years has been that we are producing too many managers to manage other

managers.

 Local Universities besides focusing on academic development when people join universities they

should also consider a cocktail of validated selection tools to help them identify quality students

at entry. Besides the cognitive capability of the student, they should also focus on identifying

personality problems early. There is no point in nurturing students in a career where they will

struggle due to their personality makeup.

Methodology

We collected data using Survey Monkey. The respondents in this survey were drawn from the following sectors of the economy.

Future Research It important to broaden the research in the future by increasing the size of the sample. This may also include getting views from multiple sources at organisational level. The method of sampling can also be enhanced but from our experience it very difficult to get random sample in this type of research.
