    (CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845).

Another main feature of this area is the havoc caused by religious and political conflicts over the centuries. The ruined castles which cling precariously to hilltops played a leading role in the struggles between Cathars & Catholics at the beginning of the 13th century. Others guarded the volatile border with Spain. Whole communities were wiped out during the merciless campaigns to rid the area of the Cathar ‘heretics’ and later when Protestants fought for religious freedom.

    A number of years ago I was traveling in Spain. Having read about the significance of Montserrat to Catalan nationalism, I decided to visit the Monastery of Montserrat, which is 50 kilometers from Barcelona in the massif of Serra del Montserrat. Perched precariously high on the mountains, the monastery is an amazing sight. In the monastery is a Black Madonna which has been revered by the Catalan people for centuries. On this visit, I met a Catalan woman who was married to an American. She spoke to me about her devotion to this Madonna and her regular visits from New York where she lived at the time. About ten years later, I went to Provence and observed the gypsy festival honoring Saint Sarah, a black statue, which they carry to the nearby Mediterranean and bathe during this annual event. Some years after this, I happened to visit Chartres Cathedral on the 1st of May, a day that honors Mary, mother of Christ. There is a Black Madonna on a pillar in a side altar and I watched while people prayed to the madonna, went up to kiss the pillar and left offerings of flowers. Later I discovered Ean Begg’s book, The Cult of the Black Virgin and began visiting more Black Madonnas sites, when I knew there was one near places I was visiting. Landscape as sacred The places where these Madonna or goddess shrines were placed usually had some special quality or presence. Often they were situated near underground waters, springs or well. They might be on rocks or in caves or grottos.

This article is about a biblical figure. For other uses, see Mary Magdalene (disambiguation). 1 Identity: Marys in the New Tes- Mary Magdalene (original Greek Μαρία ἡ tament Μαγδαληνή),[2] or Mary of Magdala and sometimes The Magdalene, is a religious figure in Christianity. She is often thought of as the second-most important woman in the New Testament after Mary, the mother of Jesus.[3] Mary Magdalene traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. She was present at Jesus’ two most important moments: the crucifixion and the resurrection.[4] Within the four Gospels she is named at least 12 times,[5] more than most of the apostles. Carol Ann Morrow views the Gospel references as describing her as courageous, brave enough to stand by Jesus in his hours of suffering, death and beyond.[3] The Gospel of Luke says seven demons had gone out of her,[Lk. 8:2] and the longer ending of Mark says Jesus had cast seven demons out from her.[Mk. 16:9] The “seven demons” may refer to a complex illness, not to any form of sinfulness.[6] She is most prominent in the narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus, at which she was present, and of the events on the morning after the immediately fol- lowing sabbath,[4] when, according to all four canonical Gospels,[Matthew 28:1–8] [Mark 16:9–10] [Luke 24:10] [John 20:18] she was either alone or as a member of a group of women the first to testify to the resurrection of Jesus.[7] John 20 and Mark 16:9 specifically name her as the first person to see Jesus after his resurrection.

Through a reading of Faust and the Wahlverwandtschaften, this dissertation shows that the two components of legal advancement in Goethe’s mind were narrative and gränzunbewußte arbitration [arbitration unconscious of borders]. Narratives shape the way we think, and thus affect laws and legal outcomes. As the legal significance of borders diminishes – as the legal order becomes more gränzunbewußt – narratives cross borders more easily, and their effect becomes more global.
