Introduction A historical narrative is thus necessarily a mixture of adequately and inadequately explained events, a congeries of established and inferred facts, at once a representation that is an interpretation and an interpretation that passes for an explanation of the whole process mirrored in the narrative. The history of Islam in Spain is a deeply contested historical narrative, whose interpretation has significant implications for Spain’s perception of its national identity, as well as its historical memory, and modern political discourse. The rejection of Islamic Iberia plays an important role in the modern understanding of the nascence of the Spanish state. This is because, the history of medieval Iberia is largely framed as an 800-year struggle for independence from invading Muslims. This historical narrative is obviously at odds with the historical presence of the religion of Islam, the irrefutable linguistic contact between Arabic and Peninsular Romance, and the role of Arabic and Arabic sources in Iberia’s rich literary history. The aforementioned interpretation of the history of the Iberian Peninsula also rejects the influence that Islam played in the creation of identities unique to the peninsula: namely, the Mudéjars, the Moriscos and the Mozarabs. -

Theorizing the Language of Law
THEORIZING THE LANGUAGE OF LAW JESÚS RODRÍGUEZ-VELASCO Law transforms reality, de iure and de facto, inasmuch as it attempts to bridge the gap between that which is done de facto and that which is regulated de iure. It is standard practice, for Alfonso X of Castile,1 to reinvent the means of writing the law. He does not limit himself to compiling or revising existing legal statutes; rather, he elevates the cor- pus of the law to the level of juridical science. Dominating the meaning of the word—its hermeneutics and its relation to truth, lies, rhetoric, history, and poetry—is also the key to dominating juridical discourse itself and its capacity for creating certainty. Or, at least, for controlling uncertainty. Uncertainty, that is to say, the ambiguity in the interpretation of the relationship between words and things, appears to be one of the targets of Alfonsine juridical science. It is in the institutions that one can best study this desire for control. In particular, the need for control becomes visible in the court and the places related to it (the palace, chamber, or bedroom), codified by the law in order to put justice into action, in the rep- resentation of power, in cultural exchange, in education, and in recreation. Here legisla- tion acquires a special significance with respect to the word, to narration, and to rhetoric. This is a philological problem: How does one compose and administer a text capable of controlling its own interpretation? How does one transpose this same dynamic to the institutions? How does one transmit this notion from the institution to those who inhabit it and who are, after all, the subjects of the legal science? It is therefore fitting to examine legislation about legal discourse, which is, in itself, the theory of law—not, however, in its abstract aspects but rather in the concrete elements of the formation of a legal vocabulary, in the way in which words, whose semantic and hermeneutic problems are clear, give life to this legal vocabulary. -

Co-Author- Dr. Vivek Kumar, Law College, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun. Abstract Witch hunting and branding women as a witch is essentially a legacy of violence against women in our society. By punishing those women who are seen as vile and wild, oppressors perhaps want to send a not so subtle message to women: docility and domesticity get rewarded; anything else gets punished. As soon as the women steps out their prescribed roles, they become targets. When women are branded as witches they are made to walk naked through the village, they are gang-raped, at times cut their breasts off, break their teeth or heads and forced to swallow urine and human faeces or eat human flesh or drink the blood of a chicken. There are thousands of women who face such brutal violence in each and every rural parts of India and superstitions are probably made to be the main reason behind all the murders and brutality towards women when the truth is they are simply used as an scapegoats and “superstitions are used as an excuse” only to hide the true motive behind those murders and brutality. This can also be called as a caste based practice where the members of upper caste society try to condemn and deter the poor and indigenous people by branding them as witches. El llegat dels germans Grimm en el segle xxi: del paper a la pantalla Emili Samper Prunera Universitat Rovira i Virgili [email protected] Resum Les rondalles que els germans Grimm van recollir als Kinder- und Hausmärchen han traspassat la frontera del paper amb nombroses adaptacions literàries, cinema- togràfiques o televisives. La pel·lícula The brothers Grimm (2005), de Terry Gilli- am, i la primera temporada de la sèrie Grimm (2011-2012), de la cadena NBC, són dos mostres recents d’obres audiovisuals que han agafat les rondalles dels Grimm com a base per elaborar la seva ficció. En aquest article s’analitza el tractament de les rondalles que apareixen en totes dues obres (tenint en compte un precedent de 1962, The wonderful world of the Brothers Grimm), així com el rol que adopten els mateixos germans Grimm, que passen de creadors a convertir-se ells mateixos en personatges de ficció. Es recorre, d’aquesta manera, el camí invers al que han realitzat els responsables d’aquestes adaptacions: de la pantalla (gran o petita) es torna al paper, mostrant quines són les rondalles dels Grimm que s’han adaptat i de quina manera s’ha dut a terme aquesta adaptació. Flower divination is a special digital divination method that uses flowers and plants as a medium, and it has become a common cultural image in Song Ci. Flower and grass divination uses the odd and even number of petals and other body parts as hexagrams or double leaves and combined stems as auspicious signs as its test methods. The reason why the image of flower and grass divination can flourish in Song Ci is closely related to the highly developed divination culture and flower trade in the Song Dynasty. It also contains the national consciousness and national experience of number worship and number divination. KEYWORDS: flower divination, digital divination, cultural image, national consciousness 1. Introduction The Song Dynasty was a period of relatively prosperous culture, and divination was an important part of Song Dynasty culture. From the emperor to the ordinary citizens, divination penetrated into their cultural life and became a special sight in the urban life of the Song Dynasty. Take the literati as an example. Since the Jiayou period, "literati and bureaucrats have always used hexagram shadows". Flower and grass divination is a special way of divination. It uses flowers, grass, and leaves as the medium, and mostly uses odd and even numbers as hexagrams as its external manifestation. It is more common in Song Ci and became one of Song Ci. -

Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies - Volume 7, Issue 3, July 2021 – Pages 201-232 Medusa Must Die! The Virgin and the Defiled in Greco-Roman Medusa and Andromeda Myths By Sharon Khalifa-Gueta* Andromeda and Medusa are two types within the same motif—that of the motif of ―the woman and the dragon‖. This article positions a mythical hero between these two women and contrasts their relationship with dragons, along with a further fresh investigation of women and dragons in ritual and cultural context. The complexity of this motif, in contrast to the dragon-slayer topos, is explored, shedding light on social views, desires, and fears toward women in the ancient Greco-Roman cultural context. These female figures are contrasted within one mythical sequence, elucidating their educational role for men. This investigation also confronts the ―good‖ versus the ―defiled‖ woman and clarifies why a ―holy-defiled‖ woman, such as Medusa, cannot exist in patriarchal cultures, and therefore must be isolated, killed, or otherwise controlled by patriarchal society. Keywords: dragon, Andromeda, Medusa, Perseus, myth Introduction The myth sequence of Perseus is well studied, mostly as part of the dragon- slayer topos. This article aims to shift the attention from Perseus to his two encounters with females, Andromeda and Medusa, and suggest that by placing them together in the same myth sequence a motif with binary visualisations emerges. While Medusa‘s image has already been broadly investigated, Andromeda has mostly been neglected, with Perseus‘s figure gaining the most attention in this myth. Focusing on the artistic manifestation of the syntagm ―the woman and the dragon‖ reveals a Greco-Roman cultural binary of the ―good‖ versus the ―bad‖ woman. -

Journal of Early Modern Christianity 2020; 7(1): 61–84 Dries De Crom* Alfonso de Castro on Vernacular Bible Translation and Christian Education https://doi.org/10.1515/jemc-2020-2018 Abstract: Alfonso de Castro (1495–1558) is known as a staunch opponent of vernacular Bible translation, who intervened on the matter at the Council of Trent. This article offers a fresh appreciation of Castro’s polemics against ver- nacular bibles, in light of a less well-known treatise in which Castro defends the right of the indigenous Spanish colonial population to be educated in the liberal arts and theology. It is argued that at the root of Castro’s misgivings about Bible translation is a concern for preserving traditional education as a necessary prerequisite for biblical interpretation. Keywords: Alfonso de Castro, Council of Trent, education, vernacular Bible translation 1 Introduction When Pedro Pacheco, Bishop of Jaén (1488–1560), travelled to Trent in the autumn of 1545 in anticipation of the upcoming council, he brought with him Alfonso de Castro (1495–1558), Franciscan theologian, humanist, Catholic apol- ogist and preacher.1 Friar De Castro taught at the Franciscan studium affiliated with the University of Salamanca, the centre of sixteenth-century scholastic theology.2 His reputation had been firmly established with the publication of Adversus omnes haereses, an encyclopaedia of heresies that would be dissemi- nated widely for years to come. His later works, De justa haereticorum punitione and De potestate legis poenalis, earned him a reputation as one of the founders of modern-day penal law. Between 1532 and 1535, Castro preached in the Low Countries, parts of Germany and France.
