The ^ Werewolf, which had long been planned, definitely began to take shape as a successor to my study. The Vampire, it was my original intention to include in the survey the were-tiger and the were-jaguar, the were-lion and were-leopards, the Abyssinian were-hyena, the were-fox and werewolves of China, and many more. I soon realized, however, that owing to the abundance of data it would prove quite impossible in one volume to travel outside Europe, that is to say, if the subject was to be treated in anything like adequate fashion. This led to a slight re-casting, and in some details a curtailment, of the first two chapters. Owing to various circumstances I was unable to complete this book either as early or as speedily as I hoped, and during the delay, slight though it actually proved, I found notes and references had continued to grow and accumulate in such profusion that it was not merely a question of excluding four continents, but there had now arisen the necessity of making a very limited and by no means easy selection from the material entirely relevant and proper to the inquiry which I was pursuing, and yet difficult to comprise within the boundaries and bournes I had already somewhat rigidly set myself and to whose rules I straitly determined to confine my ambit. In consequence I cannot but be very well aware that my chapter on France, my final chapter, and my note on the Werewolf in Literature might be and without much labour considerably extended, nor has the temptation to do this often been absent. Indeed, I have constantly been obliged to remind myself pretty sharply succincti quae sint bona libelli. Werewolfery is of itself a vast subject, and when we quite legitimately extend our pervestigation to shape- shifting and animal- metamorphosis in general the field is immense. It would have been only too simple a matter, if I had desired, to farse and bombast my notes with scores upon scores of further references, no mean quota of which might fairly have been argued to be, if unessential, at least not impertinent, but although such a shop-window display will impress the silly crowd, it is justly valued at its true worth by the scholar. izXeov rjjuiav navf£, quoth Hesiod of old. Although lycanthropy has incidentally been treated and more or less briefly referred to by many authors, the number of treatises which concentrate upon this important and world-ancient theme is actually very small. Towards the end of the sixteenth century and at the beginning of the seventeenth there may be distinguished four valuable studies, written it is to be noted from different points of view but all directly inspired by Jean Bodin’ s famous chapter, ii, 6, in the Demonomanie des Sorciers, 1580, which has rubric: “De la Lycanthropie & si les esprits peuuent changer les hommes en bestes.” The first, and by far the best, of our moumival is the work of the learned Wolfeshusius, De Lycanthropia ... Pro sententia loan. Bodini Iurecos. Galli aduersus dissentaneas aliquorum opiniones nouiter assertion, published at Leipzig, 8vo, 1591. Five years later, in 1596, the Franciscan Claude Prieur published his Dialogue de la Lycanthropie, which is full of interest and offers some valuable observations. A slighter thing is the Discours de la lycanthropie of the Sieur de Beauvois de Chauvincourt issued at Paris, 8vo, 1 599. In 1615 Dr. Jean de Nynauld gave the world his De la Lycanthropie, transformation, et extase des sorciers, Paris, 8vo, Nicolas Rousset and Jean Millot. It may be remarked that at the present day these four treatises are pieces of the last rarity. Throughout the seventeenth century lycanthropy and shape- shifting were the theme of many academic prolusions, such as the thesis maintained at Strasburg by Ambrosius Fabricius on 26th February, 1649, and printed the same year; and the De Lycanthropia of Michael Mei published at Wittenberg, 4to, 1650. In the same category we reckon the Disputatio contra Opliantriam, Lycantropiam et metempsy-chosim of Konrad Ziegra, 4to, Wittenberg, 1 650; the De Lycanthropia of Niphanius, 4to, Wittenberg, 1654; the De Transformatione hominum in brutis of Joannes Thomasius, Leipzig, 4to, 1667; the De Transmutatione hominum in lupos of Jakob Friedrich Muller, 4to, Leipzig, 1673; the Therantropismus fictus of Johann Reinhardt, 4to, Wittenberg, 1673; the De Lycanthropia of Samuel Schelwig, 4to, Danzig, 1679; the De Dubiis hominibus, in quibus forma humana et brutina mista fertur, of Gottlieb Friedrich Seligmann, 4to, Leipzig, 1679; the Dialogi und Gesprache von der Lycanthropia oder der Menschen in Woljf Verwandlung of Theophilus Lauben, 12mo, Frankfort, 1686; and others of lesser note. For the most part these monographs are content to refer to the same classical authorities and cite the same examples, traversing ground already sufficiently well trodden. They have not the original value of the pages of Chauvincourt and Claude Prieur, they are argued conventionally and scholastically, without conviction. The dons approached the problems of metamorphosis in dry zetetic mood; they did not realize that werewolfery was a terrible and enduring fact. In 1862 Dr. Wilhelm Hertz published his study, Der Werwolf si careful survey which contains much that is of value. The Book of Were-Wolves, Being an Account of a Terrible Superstition, by the Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould, London, 1 865, is now uncommon, and it is getting difficult to meet with a copy. Mr. Baring-Gould writes graphically and with vigour. I always read his work with pleasure if not with agreement, but I confess that the novelist peeps out of his pages a little too often. Moreover, he has intruded a great deal of extraneous matter. Thus he devotes no less than three chapters, eleven, twelve, and thirteen, to a highly romantic and not very accurate account of Gilles de Rais, who was a Satanist certainly, but not a werewolf. The story of the ghoul from Fra Giraldo (or Fomari) again is impertinent, and there are other irrelevancies as well as omissions. The “Natural Causes of Lycanthropy” and suggested “Mythological Origin” are unacceptable. Mr. Elliott O’Donnell has brought together in his Werwolves, London, 1912, a number of interesting histories of lycanthropy from many quarters, but we approach this vast subject from such different points of view and treat it so variously that I do not think our pages will be found to overlap. The very readable Human Animals of Miss Frank Hamel is widely comprehensive, and indeed touches upon many phenomena which (I feel) hardly fall within my province. Although not in entire agreement with certain of the theories advanced by this lady, I find some at least of her suggested lines of thought very beautiful and as sincerely expressed. In essaying some explanation of the phenomena of were-wolfery, I approach these problems entirely from the theological and philosophical point of view, where alone the solution can lie. Far be it from me to seem in any way to depreciate or underreckon the valuable work which has been done by the anthropologists in — collecting parallels from many countries and tracing significant rites and practice among primitive and distant folks, but they cannot read the riddle, and only too often have their guesses been far away from the truth. It could not be otherwise if they disregard the science of God for the science of man. Anthropology is the humblest handmaid of theology. It may not be impertinent to remark upon the spelling Werewolf which I have adopted and use. Upon this point I think I cannot do better than quote the authority of the great Oxford English Dictionary.

The history of Islam in Spain is a deeply contested historical narrative, whose interpretation has significant implications for Spain’s perception of its national identity, as well as its historical memory, and modern political discourse. The rejection of Islamic Iberia plays an important role in the modern understanding of the nascence of the Spanish state. This is because, the history of medieval Iberia is largely framed as an 800-year struggle for independence from invading Muslims. This historical narrative is obviously at odds with the historical presence of the religion of Islam, the irrefutable linguistic contact between Arabic and Peninsular Romance, and the role of Arabic and Arabic sources in Iberia’s rich literary history. The aforementioned interpretation of the history of the Iberian Peninsula also rejects the influence that Islam played in the creation of identities unique to the peninsula: namely, the Mudéjars, the Moriscos and the Mozarabs.

    THEORIZING THE LANGUAGE OF LAW JESÚS RODRÍGUEZ-VELASCO Law transforms reality, de iure and de facto, inasmuch as it attempts to bridge the gap between that which is done de facto and that which is regulated de iure. It is standard practice, for Alfonso X of Castile,1 to reinvent the means of writing the law. He does not limit himself to compiling or revising existing legal statutes; rather, he elevates the cor- pus of the law to the level of juridical science. Dominating the meaning of the word—its hermeneutics and its relation to truth, lies, rhetoric, history, and poetry—is also the key to dominating juridical discourse itself and its capacity for creating certainty. Or, at least, for controlling uncertainty. Uncertainty, that is to say, the ambiguity in the interpretation of the relationship between words and things, appears to be one of the targets of Alfonsine juridical science. It is in the institutions that one can best study this desire for control. In particular, the need for control becomes visible in the court and the places related to it (the palace, chamber, or bedroom), codified by the law in order to put justice into action, in the rep- resentation of power, in cultural exchange, in education, and in recreation. Here legisla- tion acquires a special significance with respect to the word, to narration, and to rhetoric. This is a philological problem: How does one compose and administer a text capable of controlling its own interpretation? How does one transpose this same dynamic to the institutions? How does one transmit this notion from the institution to those who inhabit it and who are, after all, the subjects of the legal science? It is therefore fitting to examine legislation about legal discourse, which is, in itself, the theory of law—not, however, in its abstract aspects but rather in the concrete elements of the formation of a legal vocabulary, in the way in which words, whose semantic and hermeneutic problems are clear, give life to this legal vocabulary.

As soon as the women steps out their prescribed roles, they become targets. When women are branded as witches they are made to walk naked through the village, they are gang-raped, at times cut their breasts off, break their teeth or heads and forced to swallow urine and human faeces or eat human flesh or drink the blood of a chicken. There are thousands of women who face such brutal violence in each and every rural parts of India and superstitions are probably made to be the main reason behind all the murders and brutality towards women when the truth is they are simply used as an scapegoats and “superstitions are used as an excuse” only to hide the true motive behind those murders and brutality. This can also be called as a caste based practice where the members of upper caste society try to condemn and deter the poor and indigenous people by branding them as witches. La pel·lícula The brothers Grimm (2005), de Terry Gilli- am, i la primera temporada de la sèrie Grimm (2011-2012), de la cadena NBC, són dos mostres recents d’obres audiovisuals que han agafat les rondalles dels Grimm com a base per elaborar la seva ficció. En aquest article s’analitza el tractament de les rondalles que apareixen en totes dues obres (tenint en compte un precedent de 1962, The wonderful world of the Brothers Grimm), així com el rol que adopten els mateixos germans Grimm, que passen de creadors a convertir-se ells mateixos en personatges de ficció. Flower divination is a special digital divination method that uses flowers and plants as a medium, and it has become a common cultural image in Song Ci. Flower and grass divination uses the odd and even number of petals and other body parts as hexagrams or double leaves and combined stems as auspicious signs as its test methods. The reason why the image of flower and grass divination can flourish in Song Ci is closely related to the highly developed divination culture and flower trade in the Song Dynasty. It also contains the national consciousness and national experience of number worship and number divination. KEYWORDS: flower divination, digital divination, cultural image, national consciousness 1. Introduction The Song Dynasty was a period of relatively prosperous culture, and divination was an important part of Song Dynasty culture. From the emperor to the ordinary citizens, divination penetrated into their cultural life and became a special sight in the urban life of the Song Dynasty. Take the literati as an example. Since the Jiayou period, "literati and bureaucrats have always used hexagram shadows". Flower and grass divination is a special way of divination. It uses flowers, grass, and leaves as the medium, and mostly uses odd and even numbers as hexagrams as its external manifestation. It is more common in Song Ci and became one of Song Ci.

The Virgin and the Defiled in Greco-Roman Medusa and Andromeda Myths By Sharon Khalifa-Gueta* Andromeda and Medusa are two types within the same motif—that of the motif of ―the woman and the dragon‖. This article positions a mythical hero between these two women and contrasts their relationship with dragons, along with a further fresh investigation of women and dragons in ritual and cultural context. The complexity of this motif, in contrast to the dragon-slayer topos, is explored, shedding light on social views, desires, and fears toward women in the ancient Greco-Roman cultural context. These female figures are contrasted within one mythical sequence, elucidating their educational role for men. This investigation also confronts the ―good‖ versus the ―defiled‖ woman and clarifies why a ―holy-defiled‖ woman, such as Medusa, cannot exist in patriarchal cultures, and therefore must be isolated, killed, or otherwise controlled by patriarchal society. This article aims to shift the attention from Perseus to his two encounters with females, Andromeda and Medusa, and suggest that by placing them together in the same myth sequence a motif with binary visualisations emerges. While Medusa‘s image has already been broadly investigated, Andromeda has mostly been neglected, with Perseus‘s figure gaining the most attention in this myth. Focusing on the artistic manifestation of the syntagm ―the woman and the dragon‖ reveals a Greco-Roman cultural binary of the ―good‖ versus the ―bad‖ woman.

This article offers a fresh appreciation of Castro’s polemics against ver- nacular bibles, in light of a less well-known treatise in which Castro defends the right of the indigenous Spanish colonial population to be educated in the liberal arts and theology. It is argued that at the root of Castro’s misgivings about Bible translation is a concern for preserving traditional education as a necessary prerequisite for biblical interpretation. Keywords: Alfonso de Castro, Council of Trent, education, vernacular Bible translation 1 Introduction When Pedro Pacheco, Bishop of Jaén (1488–1560), travelled to Trent in the autumn of 1545 in anticipation of the upcoming council, he brought with him Alfonso de Castro (1495–1558), Franciscan theologian, humanist, Catholic apol- ogist and preacher.1 Friar De Castro taught at the Franciscan studium affiliated with the University of Salamanca, the centre of sixteenth-century scholastic theology.2 His reputation had been firmly established with the publication of Adversus omnes haereses, an encyclopaedia of heresies that would be dissemi- nated widely for years to come. His later works, De justa haereticorum punitione and De potestate legis poenalis, earned him a reputation as one of the founders of modern-day penal law. Between 1532 and 1535, Castro preached in the Low Countries, parts of Germany and France.
