ISBN 84-00-08343-1 Reviewed by Óscar Perea Rodríguez University of California, Berkeley In his essays, Miquel Batllori often argued that scholars researching Humanism should pay particular attention to the 15th century in order to gain a better understanding of the 16th century. This has been amply achieved by César Olivera Serrano, author of the book reviewed here, for in it he has offered us remarkable insight into 15th-century Castilian history through an extraordinary analysis of 14th-century history. As Professor Pardo de Guevara points out in his prologue, this book is an in-depth biographical study of Queen Beatriz of Portugal (second wife of the King John I of Castile). Additionally, it is also an analysis of the main directions of Castilian foreign policy through the late 14th and 15th centuries and of how Castile’s further political and economic development was strictly anchored in its 14th-century policies. The first chapter, entitled La cuestionada legitimidad de los Trastámara, focuses on Princess Beatriz as the prisoner of her father’s political wishes. King Ferdinand I of Portugal wanted to take advantage of the irregular seizure of the Castilian throne by the Trastámara family. Thus, he offered himself as a candidate to Castile’s crown, sometimes fighting for his rights in the battlefield, sometimes through peace treatises. -

September 1999 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the significance of Divine Love in the Islamic tradition with reference to Sufis who used the medium of Arabic to communicate their ideas. Divine Love means the mutual love between God and man. It is commonly accepted that the Sufis were the forerunners in writing about Divine Love. However, there is a relative paucity of literature regarding the details of their conceptions of Love. Therefore, this attempt can be considered as one of the first of its kind in this field. The first chapter will attempt to define the nature of love from various perspectives, such as, psychology, Islamic philosophy and theology. The roots of Divine Love in relation to human love will be explored in the context of the ideas that were prevalent amongst the Sufi authors regarded as authorities; for example, al-Qushayri, al-Hujwiri and al-Kalabadhi. The second chapter investigates the origins Of Sufism with a view to establishing the role that Divine Love played in this. The etymological derivations of the term Sufi will be referred to as well as some early Sufi writings. It is an undeniable fact that the Qur'an and tladith are the bedrocks of the Islamic religion, and all Muslims seek to justify their ideas with reference to them. -

Estrenada el 1853, Il trovatore comparteix amb La traviata, estrenada el mateix any, i Rigoletto, estrenada dos anys abans, el que s’ha anomenat la “trilogia popular”, tres òperes que tenen en comú el fet de posar el focus en la psicologia dels personatges per deixar un poc de banda temes patriòtics o socials, com s’esdevé a òperes com Nabucco. Inheriting the rule from the Almohads, the Marinids were regarded as a strong and formidable Islamic government which once ruled the entire Maghreb and parts of al-Andalus at the height of its glory. Not unlike previous Muslim governments, the Marinid Kingdom also faced various problems and went through several conflicts which affected its stability and integrity. In fact the conflicts even caused the demise of the Marinid Kingdom in the year 1465 which saw the emergence of the Wattasids. -

There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors. -

The Alhambra is a medieval palace-city that had been the royal residence and seat of government for the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the last Islamic dynasty of al-Andalus. With the dynasty’s founding in 1238 CE, a steady supply of water became a necessity for an expanding palace-city, both in the royal precincts of the site as well as the medina area where the ancillary population resided. Besides basic hygiene, in an Islamic context, water was important for observance of religious obligations as well as a symbol of power and authority for the Nasrid sultans with the many baths, fountains, gardens, and reflecting pools found throughout the Alhambra that are a mark of luxury in an otherwise arid environment. Lastly, in terms of agricultural use, providing for the use and storage of water at the Alhambra was important for cultivation both inside and outside the walls of the palace-city, as well as in the lands surrounding the city of Granada itself. The practical uses of water as well as the symbolism of wealth and power that comes from water control are important for understanding the context of water use and management at the Alhambra. -

The last literary no- tice that we have up to the year 469 is from Hy- datius’s Chronica and we do not hear a word about Galicia until John of Biclar, in his Chroni- con, reports once again on the province begin- ning with the year 550.1 Fortunately, archaeolo- gy has continued to yield finds dating from the fifth and sixth cen- turies thereby illuminat- ing our understanding of this era lacking in liter- ary testimony. There is, moreover, an already known inscription, orig- inating from San Salva- dor de Vairão near Porto that has been the source of controversy regarding its date (see map). COAT OF ARMS OF KING FERDINAND THE CATHOLIC Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512 Coat of Arms of King Ferdinand the Catholic Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512 Marble 113 x 73.5 cm Carved out of marble, this coat of arms of King Ferdinand the Catholic represents both his lineage and his sovereignties. It is rectangular, with rounded inferior angles, ending in a point at the base and three points at the chief, a common shape in early sixteenth-century Spain. It is a quartered coat of arms, with its first and fourth quarters counterquartered with the arms of Castile-Leon, and its second and third quarters tierced per pale with the arms of Aragon, counterquartered per saltire with Sicily and counter-tierced with the arms of Hungary, Anjou and Jerusalem referring to Naples, besides the enté en point for Granada. It is crested by an open royal crown that has lost its rosette cresting, and it was originally supported by an eagle, as shown by the claws on the third and fourth quarters and the springing of the wings and the neck above the crown. Ferdinand the Catholic and the arms of Castile-Leon The counterquartered for Castile-Leon features, in the first and fourth quarters, a crenelated castle with three merlons, an emblem for the Castilian monarchs adopted by Alfonso VIII shortly before 1176 and, in the second and third quarters, the crowned lion rampant of the monarchs of Leon, of pre-heraldic origins, around the mid-eleventh century. The combination emerged as a symbol for the union of the kingdoms of Castile and Leon in 1230 effected by Ferdinand III the Saint. -

REVIEWS 1487 Fleck, Kozlowski, and others have now provided a solid basis for continued research into the Neapolitan Trecento. Part 3, on the cult of Saint Louis of Toulouse and the Angevin beata stirps, metic- ulously reassesses Simone Martini’s Saint Louis of Toulouse altarpiece for Naples’s cathe- dral and its parallels in Assisi (S. Francesco), Florence (S. Croce), and Siena (S. Francesco), masterfully arguing for their origins in the ruling agendas of both Neapolitan and Hungarian Angevins. Norman’s conclusion follows these trends into the reign of Giovanna I. This well-produced volume is richly illustrated in color and black-and-white images of manuscripts, painting, sculpture, and architecture. Many of these will be familiar to stu- dents of the Trecento—some only to students of Trecento Naples. Several have been newly and perceptively reinterpreted by Norman. One of the delights of Norman’s book is her close rereading of Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Louis of Toulouse fresco in S. Francesco, Siena, which she dates to the 1340s (cover, 192, 209–17). In Lorenzetti’s historical ricordanza, young Robert of Anjou and his younger brothers attend their father, Charles II, who watches pensively as his eldest son and heir, Louis of Toulouse, takes his Franciscan vows before Boniface VIII. Sanctity and devotion foreground family ties, per- sonal ambition, and dynastic anxiety. Here and throughout this volume Norman makes Angevin high politics come alive through the faces and gestures of Sienese art. Her study will become a touchstone in the ongoing reassessment of Naples’s place in Trecento Italy. Ronald G.
