China’s options in a changing world The world is enter a new phase of great changes. While the general trend of peaceful development and cooperation remains unchanged, industries, economic drivers and governance are all changing. Isolationism, conservatism and the doctrine of power are becoming stronger. The geopolitical layout is shifting and the friction between developed and emerging economies continues to grow. The interests of developing economies are becoming more differentiated. The rules of the game for economic globalization are being adjusted and upgraded. After 40 years of reform and rapid development, China’s role in the world has changed from that of a mere follower to both a follower and a leader. Both the internal and external developmental environment becoming more complicated and challenging. From the outside, China is facing competition from both developed and developing economies; while within, China is pressured by the enormous scale of transformation and upgrading, and the vested interests of different parties. In face of all these changes, China have to make new choices. To the outside world, China has to be more active on the international stage and keep up with new changes so as to accelerate the integration with new international norms; within the country, China must take a firmer approach towards market-oriented reform, improve legal governance further, protect legitimate property rights, and effectively build a modern governance system in which the market plays a decisive role to inject energy and inspire creativity in its companies and people.

Vice Chairman and Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation

Economic situation, China-US relations and Belt and Road

In the current economic situation, China’s GDP growth rate has slowed down, but the country’s economic structure has been optimized. China still have its growth potential. The worrying trade war is just the surface of China-US relations. Some US scholars believe that the long-term interests of the two countries are different and the gap is widening, but both sides can still form a competitive cooperation. While there are misunderstandings over the Belt and Road Initiative by some countries, the Initiative is indeed an important starting point for achieving sustainable developmental goals and tackling climate change.

Mr. Jin Xu

Former Minster Counselor of the Economic and Commercial Counsellor's Office of the Chinese Embassy in the UK

Promoting Belt and Road through the strengthening of cultural communication The Belt and Road initiative already spans 65 countries across the Euroasian continent with its scope of influence extending to many regions in Asia, Europe and Africa. Cultural differences between countries have become one of the obstacles affecting communication between countries and individuals, bringing risks to transnational business cooperation and cross-border trade. In foreign trade and economic, cultural differences can affect cross-border cooperation at any time. In view of the great prospect for China, cultural differences in Belt and Road will bring many opportunities and challenges to China and the world. Only by understanding cultural differences can we avoid risks and better cope with the challenges.

CFO challenges under Belt and Road

The Belt and Road initiative is China’s macro strategy at a national level. At the company level, the more important component is the micro strategy. When a company enters the international stage and while its CEO is leading the charge, it needs someone to protect it from all directions. Who can protect a company from the external elements? CPAs, lawyers, chambers and governments. Who can protect it internally? That would be the CFO, Internal Audit and Control.
