Resumen y Abstract VII Resumen Esta investigación analiza los sentidos que las mujeres Mayas Mam en lucha contra la Mina Marlin le asignan a sus estrategias de resistencia anti minería, y cómo éstos configuran sus identidades étnicas y de género durante el periodo de 2003-2017 en San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. Se argumenta que el movimiento anti minería es heterogéneo, tanto en términos de actores, como en las estrategias de lucha empleadas. En torno a lo anterior, se centra en un grupo específico de mujeres Mam que hacen parte la pastoral “Defensores de la Madre Tierra” perteneciente a la Parroquia local, planteando que los sentidos que estas mujeres le asignan a sus estrategias de lucha se configuran dentro de sus experiencias con la religión católica y la espiritualidad Maya. Por otro lado, se plantea que la categoría “Defensoras de la Madre Tierra” es una identidad étnica y de género esencializada que se produce entre este grupo, en alteridad con las identidades híper masculinas que se configuran entre los hombres que trabajan para la mina Marlin. Se concluye que las mujeres Mam únicamente pueden ser oídas con legitimidad en su lucha contra la minería a través del uso de sus identidades esencializadas, dado que desde su posición subalternizada, solo pueden hablar si emplean los mismos códigos coloniales y patriarcales que las oprimen. En esta investigación se usó la metodología del punto de vista feminista, desarrollando 18 entrevistas individuales y 1 taller que incluyó la participación de 11 mujeres Mam, en diciembre de 2017 en San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. Abstract This research analyzes the meanings that Mam Mayan women who oppose the Marlin Mine assign to their anti-mining resistance strategies, and how these meanings shaped their ethnic and gender identities during the period of 2003-2017 in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. It argues that the anti-mining movement is heterogeneous, both in terms of actors, as well as in terms of their resistance strategies they employed. Given the above, it focuses on a specific group of Mam women who are part of the pastoral “Defenders of Mother Earth” that belongs to the local Catholic Parish, stating that the meanings that these women assign to their resistance strategies are configured among their experiences with the Catholic religion and Mayan spirituality. On the other hand, it analyzes the category of “Defenders of Mother Earth” as an essentialist ethnic and gender identity produced among this group, in relation to the hyper-masculine identities that are configured among the men who work for the Marlin mine. It concludes that Mam women can only be legitimately heard in their fight against mining by using their essentialist identities, given the fact that from their subalternized position, they can only speak if they use the same colonial and patriarchal codes that oppress them. This research used the feminist point of view methodology. One workshop and 18 individual interviews that included the participation of 11 Mam women were developed in December 2017, in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala.     METAPHORS OF RELATIVE ELEVATION, POSITION AND RANKING IN POPOL VUH Nathaniel TARN and Martin PRECHTEL Rutgers University This paper is an account of work very much in progress on the textual analysis of Popol V uh, and is one study among others (since this theme is attracting a number of students today) of inter-con­ nections and mutual illuminations between Popol Vuh and the con­ temporary ethnographic record in Highland Guatemala and Chiapas. For some considerable time now Popol Vuh has been considered as the major extant text of the Mesoamerican literary traditions, and as one of the most remarkable of all human creation stories, both for its beauty and for the complexity of its cosmological and mythical messages. While it may or may not have had a hieroglyphic original, the present alphabetic version of Po pol V uh wars written down some­ where between 1545 and 1558 by an anonymous member of the Cavek lineage of the Quiche Maya of Guatemala. This lineage had been a ruling house until it fell to the Spaniards in 1524. The manu­ script was copied by Francisco de Ximenez, a Spanish priest, some 150 years later. While there are references to Christianity in the text, these are few and it is generally regarded as one of the purest extant accounts of prehispanic Maya world-view. At the end of the hook, what we call mythical history shades into the historical history of the Quiche, so that the hook can serve as an illustration of the extent to which these two kinds of history are not held a,part by Maya generally.

We know a good deal about the events that led to the conquest of Yucatan by these foreigners, and the subsequent replacement of their state by a resurgent but already decadent Maya culture, for we have entered into a kind of history, albeit far more shaky than that which was recorded on the monuments of the Classic Period. The traditional annals of the peoples of Yucatan, and also of the Guatemalan highlanders, transcribed into Spanish letters early in Colonial times, apparently reach back as far as the beginning of the Postclassic era and are very important sources. But such annals should be used with much caution, whether they come to us from Bishop Landa himself, from statements made by the native nobility, or from native lawsuits and land claims. These are often confused and often self-contradictory, not least because native lineages seem to have deliberately falsified their own histories for political reasons. Our richest (and most treacherous) sources are the K’atun Prophecies of Yucatan, contained in the “Books of Chilam Balam,” which derive their name from a Maya savant said to have predicted the arrival of the Spaniards from the east.

Even if epigraphers are able to transliterate and transcribe some of them, their exact meaning and significance is not clear to us. It seems still more complicated in the case of titles that have not been fully deciphered, though at times it is possible to establish for what reason a specific title was held by a specific person. Such is the case with the so-called “vase title” (Proskouriakoff 1961). Even without an exact reading we know that this title was associated with Goddess O and was used by the Maya to designate married women, able to give birth (Colas 2004: xxiii). In the case of Maya women we have another enigmatic “godly title” found only in a few Classic period texts, known as the “GI title”. The title consists of three signs: 1) the undeciphered sign T217d, 2) the logogram T4 NAH and 3) the glyph representing the head of GI. The title is found in a few Early Classic texts (Boot 2001, Stuart 2005: 121) and Linda Schele considered it one of the name phrases of GI (Schele 1994). There are some glyphic variations of the title (Figure 1). The “hand” sign and the glyph NAH are sometimes accompanied only by the so-called “dotted” ajaw. In another example the “hand” sign and the logogram NAH are accompanied by the ajaw sign and the head of GI, and finally we have the “hand” sign attached to the logogram NAH and the head of GI.

The task is not a matter of deciphering Maya hieroglyphs, since the only surviving version of the Popol Vuh is a transcription into alphabetic writing, but the manuscript nevertheless abounds with ambiguities and obscurities. My work took me not only into dark corners of libraries but into the forests and tall cornfields and smoky houses of highland Guatemala, where the people who speak and walk and work in the pages of the Popol Vuh, the Quiche Maya, have hundreds of thousands of descendants. Among them are diviners called "daykeepers," who know how to interpret illnesses, omens, dreams, messages given by sensations internal to their own bodies, and the multiple rhythms of time. It is their business to bring what is dark into "white clarity," just as the gods of the Popol Vuh first brought the world itself to light. The Quiche people speak a Mayan language, say prayers to Mayan mountains and Mayan ancestors, and keep time according to the Mayan calendar. They are also interested citizens of the larger contemporary world, but they find themselves surrounded and attacked by those who have yet to realize they have something to teach the rest of us.

That other manuscripts exist in Guatemala than the one discovered by Ximenes and transcribed by Scherzer and Brasseur de Bourbourg is probable. So thought Brinton, and the present writer shares his belief. And ere it is too late it would be well that these--the only records of the faith of the builders of the mystic ruined and deserted cities of Central America--should be recovered. This is not a matter that should be left to the enterprise of individuals, but one which should engage the consideration of interested governments; for what is myth to-day is often history to-morrow.     Gendering the Hero Twins in the Popol Vuh Susan D. Gillespie Introduction The Popol Vuh, an epic historical narrative authored by K’iche’ Maya peoples in highland Guatemala, has been widely judged as the “most distinguished example” of surviving native American literature (Morley in Recinos, 1950:ix). It was written in European script in the K’iche’ language, most likely between 1554-1558, three decades after the Spanish invasion and consequent destruction of the principal K’iche’ capital, Utatlan. That original document is now presumed lost, but it was copied by a Dominican friar, Francisco Ximénez (Estrada, 1973), at the beginning of the eighteenth century (Carmack, 1973:25; Recinos, 1950:23). Narrated in third person, the story opens with cosmic creation: the lifting of the earth out of the sea, followed by several attempts by primordial gods to create humans to populate the earth’s surface. Early in the story creation is threatened by three monstrous, disorderly beings who introduce chaos and must be destroyed. The nefarious trio is defeated by two youthful demiurges, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, tricksters now often referred to as the Hero Twins and comparable to similar characters in North and South American folklore. The “myth” section of the narrative ostensibly ends when the Hero Twins defeat the Death Lords of the Underworld (Xibalba) and rise up as the sun and moon, after which true humans are created and “history” begins. Within Maya scholarship the Popol Vuh is treated as the authoritative reference on ancient religion and cosmology. It has been called “the single most important document of Maya mythology” (Schele and Miller, 1986:31), a veritable “New World Bible” (Edmonson, 1985:107; Freidel et al., 1993:43).
