FOREWORD The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with useful advice and information, which you may need before leaving the United States, while preparing for your arrival in Austria, and during your stay in Austria. The material is general in nature. It is illustrative and by no means comprehensive. Some opinions contained in this document may seem colored by personal experiences of former teaching assistants from whose reports we draw. No two experiences as an English-language assistant are alike, and you should bear that in mind when reading this handbook. The midyear survey reports and final reports you complete during the year will offer a good opportunity for constructive comments on the materials provided and your experience as an English- language assistant. These reports will be used to periodically update the information included in this handbook. If the handbook proves to be helpful in preparing you for your year in Austria, it will have served its purpose. Please bring it with you to Austria and refer to it as needed throughout your stay. Security Issues The US government publishes official travel directives and advisories for US citizens abroad, accessible on the Department of State website. For relevant news releases and statements with a more “local” or Austrian focus, the website of the US embassy in Austria has good resources. Fulbright Austria is in regular touch with the US embassy in Vienna and informs USTAs on an equally regular basis if there are any warnings, alerts, or specific issues of concern. Please note, however, that Fulbright Austria has no additional sources of information on security issues outside of the official sources listed above. Registering with the US Consulate in Vienna US citizens staying in Austria for more than three months are encouraged to register with the US consulate in Austria and to inform them of your arrival, address in Austria, and eventual departure. The relevant form can be completed online using the US embassy’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.     Remarks by Fulbright Austria Executive Director Dr. Lonnie Johnson at the Celebration of 65 Years of Fulbright Exchanges at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York City on April 5, 2016 I would like to briefly introduce you to Ambassador Kathryn Walt-Hall and Craig Hall, whom we want to acknowledge this evening. Kathryn Walt-Hall is a grower of fine wines today and her career as a vintner actually began back in the 1970, when her family purchased their first vineyard. She has had a multifaceted career as a successful businesswoman, attorney, community activist, and, as you know, she served as the United States ambassador to Austria from 1997-2001. Craig Hall is the chairman and founder of the Dallas-based Hall Financial Group. He always has been a passionate entrepreneur, and he is a businessman and investor with a wide range of interests. I will never forget the story he once told me about the beginning of his entrepreneurial career at the University of Michigan, when he, as a student, figured out that based on the rents that he and his roommates were paying in their off-campus housing he could buy the house they were living in. And he did. During her tenure as US Ambassador to Austria, one of Ambassador Hall’s many responsibilities was serving as one of the two honorary co-chairs of the binational Austrian- American Fulbright Commission – along with the Austrian Minister for Science and Research, a position that happens to be filled by the Austrian Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner today. She was an enthusiastic advocate of educational and cultural exchange and all things Fulbright, and the annual receptions she and her husband hosted at their residence for the incoming US Fulbright grantees as well as the homecoming Austrian Fulbright grantees were always memorable experiences for all parties involved.

    2020 Annual Report 2020 Annual Report | 1 From the Chair of the Board Dear Fellow Fulbrighters: Who would have guessed that 2020 would require us to discover new ways to sustain our global community without travel, without our traditional conference, without our day on Capitol Hill? But we did find those resources. Thanks to a very resilient and hard-working staff, thanks to our dedicated members and donors, and thanks to our Board of Directors for taking the long view, we stayed strong. The silver lining brought us new possibilities for outreach, virtual programming, new partnerships, and increased participation in advocacy that have redefined our future. A significant achievement from this past year was the approval of the 2021-2023 Strategic Plan, which will guide the Association during the next three years. It was designed to be bold, innovative, and adaptable to changing conditions. As a result, our plan directs us to be more outward facing through advocacy and service. We hope to expand our congressional advocacy efforts by raising public awareness of the Fulbright Program. By highlighting service as part of our mission, we are emphasizing the role of grantees as citizen diplomats who contribute to the public good. We seek to engage our membership in volunteerism through community service to promote international education and cultural understanding in the U.S. and internationally. Our programming will be intentional and centered around a common goal to build community among our members and strengthen the Fulbright program. We benefit from the natural rotation of exceptional individuals eager to serve in governance.

    “Fulbright, Austria, and Austrian Studies” Remarks by Fulbright Austria Executive Director Lonnie R. Johnson Upon the occasion of the 39th annual conference of the German Studies Association and to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Austrian-American Fulbright Program at the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC October 3, 2015 I want to thank Ambassador Manz and his team at the Austrian Embassy for hosting this fine event, and I want to thank Mary Kirk, Office Director for Academic Programs at the US Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs for her kind remarks. The Austrian Fulbright commission board and my coworkers merit her praise. They do a fine job for which I am fortunate to often harvest the acclaim. I want to make a few brief remarks about Senator Fulbright and Austria, the Fulbright Program, Austrian Studies, and the German Studies Association which includes Austrian Studies in its German- speaking studies agenda. I am not going to talk about the Austrian-American Fulbright program in detail, but I do want to refer you to a new brochure on the program, which is available here, and to encourage you to consult our redesigned website at www.fulbright.at. Please note the Austrian- American Educational Commission’s use of the moniker Fulbright Austria that concisely captures who we are and what we do so. I am going to limit myself to five brief observations. The first refers to J. William Fulbright’s biography. Fulbright was born 1905 and raised in Fayetteville, in northwestern Arkansas, where he attended the University of Arkansas.
