RABBI’S CORNER But take utmost care and watch yourselves scrupulously, so that you do not forget the things that you saw with your own eyes and so that they do not fade from your mind as long as you live. And make them known to your children and your children’s children. ~ Deuteronomy 4:9

I am thrilled to inform you that my memoir, The Boy Who Lost His Birthday, is published. We will have a book signing and sales event at the Temple on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 9 at 7:00 pm.

It has taken years to reach this point, because I have put it aside several times. However, six years ago, I led a group from Rodef to Eastern Europe — Warsaw, Krakow-Auschwitz, Prague and Budapest. The silence in most of them was deafening. The discovery was not new, but the experience of it was shocking. Coming home, I decided to give voice to memory and share it with you as best as I can. It is my tribute to so many dear ones and a promise kept to tell what we saw and experienced.

I felt it also a duty to tell the truth once again.

So now I share it with you and your children — a story, a journey of loss, struggle and the triumph of the human spirit.

Let us go into the New Year with heads uplifted, with our backs straight and a hopeful mind.

New Initiative To Make A Difference In Our Local Community Come join us on Tuesday, October 21, at 7:30 at the Temple, to hear about a new opportunity for our community to work towards positive change on the local level. Virginians for Organized Interfaith Community Engagement (VOICE) is a faith-based, grass-roots organization that has been in the process of formation for about a year under the auspices of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF, www.industrialareasfoundation.org). The goal is to work together to identify local concerns shared by those involved and take action on those concerns in a non-partisan manner. VOICE is the new organization being formed in Virginia, and our neighboring congregations Eitz Chaim and Beth El are participating in this project, along with many non-Jewish congregations in the area. Our efforts to get involved in a new level of grassroots social action are part of an initiative within the Reform movement. There is a new department of the URJ, called Just Congregations, which encourages and facilitates Reform congregations’ engagement in this type of work. The program on October 21 will be an introductory orientation for members of our community to learn about VOICE and how it works. Martin Trimble, the area’s IAF community organizer, will lead the orientation. We hope you can join us and look forward to subsequent discussion and input about how joining VOICE might work for TRS and whether you might like to become involved. If you are interested in attending the meeting or hearing more about this initiative, please RSVP to Rabbi Saxe by calling or emailing him at [email protected].

It’s as though we never had summer break! The teachers and students are off and running (literally) down the halls and on the playground. As everyone has settled in and adjusted to their classrooms, it feels like the school year continued throughout the summer months. The ease of transition to a new school year is a true testament to the outstanding leadership of our Director, Fran Pfeffer, the incredibly organized offi ce staff, Anja Chase and Jamie Korelitz and of course, to the wonderful, warm and enthusiastic teachers and assistants! We thank you all for your hard work and dedication to our children.

The Parent Committee is also in full gear. We kicked off the school year with a fantastic informational session from our new school psychologist, Dr. Deb Cohen, who spoke with parents about managing separation anxiety for our children. Her talk included points about why it is a healthy developmental step for young children to separate from their caregivers and she gave tips to help children and their families comfortably transition to pre-school life. The Parent Committee also hosted a wonderful family gathering at our 6th Annual Fall Playdate in the Park. This gave students and parents a time to reconnect, now that the hustle and bustle of back to school is behind us. We are looking forward to all of our upcoming fall programming. Please stay tuned to your E-Newsletters for dates and times of specifi c events.
