The Land of Israel’s Loyalty to the Jewish People by Rabbi Chaim Jachter As Parashat Behukotai and the book of Vayikra draw to a close, Hashem delivers a stinging rebuke and warning to our people. This rebuke, known as the Tochahah is the first of two such rebukes in the Humash (the second being towards the end of Sefer Devarim). This section contains a series of frighteningly prophetic descriptions of the tragedies that will befall the nation should they fail to follow God’s ways. Indeed, so frightening is this Tochachah that Torah is read this section in a lower voice. There are even some synagogues where the rabbi or Torah reader is called for the Aliyah that contains the Tochachah, as some would rather avoid being called for this Aliyah. In the midst of the very dark cloud of these warnings of punishment and exile in Parashat Behukotai we find a silver lining. The Torah promises (Vayikra 26:32) that after our people will be exiled from our land, our enemies will fail in their endeavors to settle the land. Ramban, writing in the twelfth century, notes that this is an extraordinary promise to us as there is no other place on earth that at one time was settled, lush and fertile but is now utterly desolate and destroyed. He observes that this promise has most obviously been fulfilled in that from the time we left our land, it has not accepted any other nation, despite their many efforts to develop the land. Indeed, the Romans, Arabs, Crusaders and Ottomans failed miserably in their efforts to settle the land of Israel. -

From Deuteronomy to Hebrews: The Promised Land and the Unity of Scripture Gareth Lee Cockerill Gareth Lee Cockerill has taught New Testament at Wesley Biblical Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi since 1984, where he also served as the Academic Dean and Professor of Biblical Interpretation and Theology. He earned his PhD from Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Cockerill has served with his wife, Rosa, for nine years as a missionary in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Dr. Cockerill has written numerous articles and book reviews for such journals as Tyndale Bulletin, Bulletin for Biblical Research, Journal of Biblical Literature, The Evangelical Quarterly, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Interpretation, and Missiology. He is also the author of The Epistle to the Hebrews (NICNT, Eerdmans, 2012) and A Guidebook for Pilgrims to the Heavenly City (William Carey, 2013). Introduction “The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land” (Gen 12:7a). With these words God brought his promises to a climax. He had already promised to bless Abraham, to make him a great nation, and to bless the world through him (Gen 12:2-3). The land would be the place that gave concrete shape to fulfillment. These promises to Abraham address the degenerate state of the human race depicted in Genesis 1-11. Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically. -

Chechnya is a Federal Republic of Russia, under President Putin, and they start the 3rd World War, which leads to the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ on 10-22-2027 ("Pi"). King Benjamin and the Feast of Tabernacles John A. Tvedtnes A portion of the brass plates brought by Lehi to the New World contained the books of Moses (1 Nephi 5:10-13). Nephi and other Book of Mormon writers stressed that they obeyed the laws given therein: “And we did observe to keep the judgments, and the statutes, and the commandments of the Lord in all things according to the law of Moses” (2 Nephi 5:10). But aside from sacrice2 and the Ten Commandments,3 we have few explicit details regarding the Nephite observance of the Mosaic code. One would expect, for example, some mention of the festivals which played such an important role in the religious observances of ancient Israel. Though the Book of Mormon mentions no religious festivals by name, it does detail many signicant Nephite assemblies. One of the more noteworthy of the Nephite ceremonies was the coronation of the second Mosiah by his father, Benjamin.4 Some years ago, Professor Hugh Nibley outlined the similarities between this Book of Mormon account and ancient Middle Eastern coronation rites.5 He pointed out that these rites took place at the annual New Year festival, when the people were placed under covenant of obedience to the monarch. My own research further explores the Israelite coronation/New Year rites, and aims to complement other scholarly studies of the ceremonial context of Benjamin’s speech. THE SABBATICAL FEASTS In the sacred calendar, the Israelite new year began with the month of Abib (later called Nisan), in the spring (end March/beginning April).6 This month encompassed the feasts of Passover (beginning at sundown on the fourteenth day) and Unleavened Bread (fourteenth through twenty-first days), and included “holy convocations,” analogous to the Latter-day Saint April general conference (Leviticus 23:4-8). -

RUBENSTEIN INTRODUCTION he festival of Sukkot (sometimes translated as “Booths” or “Tabernacles”) is one of the three pilgrimage festivals T(shalosh regalim). Celebrated for seven days, from the 15th to 21st of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, Sukkot is followed immediately by the festival of Shemini Atzeret (the “Eighth-day Assembly”), on the 22nd of Tishrei, thus creating an eight-day festival in all. In post-Talmudic times in the Diaspora, where the festivals were celebrated for an extra day, the second day of Shemini Atzeret, the 23rd of Tishrei, became known as “Simchat Torah” (“The Rejoicing for the Torah”) and developed a new festival identity. Like the other pilgrimage holidays, Pesach and Shavuot, Sukkot, includes both agricultural and historical dimensions, and the festival’s name can be explained with reference to either. The Torah connects the name “Sukkot” to the “booths” in which the Israelites dwelled throughout their desert sojourn: You shall live in sukkot seven days; all citizens in Israel shall live in sukkot, in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt; I am the Lord.1 As such the commandment to reside in booths links the festival to the historic exodus from Egypt and commemorates the experience of the Israelites as they wandered through the desert. -
