The Name Mormon in reformed Egyptian, Sumerian, and Mesoamerican Languages by Jerry D. Grover Jr., PE, PG May 1, 2017 Blind third party peer review performed by After obtaining the golden plates, Joseph Smith stated that once he moved to Harmony, Pennsylvania, in the winter of 1827, he “commenced copying the characters of[f] the plates.” He stated: I copyed a considerable number of them and by means of the Urim and Thummin I translated some of them.1 In the mid 1830s, Oliver Cowdery and Frederick G. Williams recorded four characters that had been copied from the plates and Joseph Smith’s translations of those characters; one set of two characters was translated together as “The Book of Mormon” and the other set of two characters was translated as “The interpreters of languages” (see figures 1 and 2). Both of these phrases can be found in the original script of the current Title Page of the Book of Mormon. It clearly includes “Book of Mormon,” mentions “interpretation,” and infers the language of the Book of Mormon. It is reasonable therefore to assume that these characters came from the Title Page. Mosiah the Lack of a Preface for the Book of Mosiah in the Present Book
Book of Mormon Commentary Mosiah 1 Mosiah The lack of a preface for the book of Mosiah in the present Book of Mormon is probably because the text takes 1 up the Mosiah account some time after its original beginning. The original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, written in Oliver Cowdery’s hand, has no title for the Book of Mosiah. It was inked in later, prior to sending it to the printer for typesetting. The first part of Mormon’s abridgment of Mosiah’s record…was evidently on the 116 pages lost by Martin Harris. John A. Tvedtnes, Rediscovering the Book of Mormon, ed. By John L. Sorenson and Melvin J. Thorne [Salt Lake City: 1991], 33 Note that the main story in the book of Mosiah is told in the third person rather than in the first person as was the 2 custom in the earlier books of the Book of Mormon. The reason for this is that someone else is now telling the story and that “someone else” is Mormon. With the beginning of the book of Mosiah we start our study of Mormon’s abridgment of various books that had been written on the large plates of Nephi (3 Nephi 5:8-12). The book of Mosiah and the five books that follow—Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, 4 Nephi, and Mormon—were all abridged or condensed by Mormon from the large plates of Nephi, and these abridged versions were written by Mormon on the plates that bear his name, the plates of Mormon. These are the same plates that were given to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni on September 22, 1827. -

VFor stylistic and other reasons, they do not really fit with verses 1–11, so commentators have tried to explain their presence as a sort of “bridge” or “transition” that Mormon wrote to connect the record of the small plates with his abridgment from the large plates.1 This paper proposes a different explanation: Rather than being a bridge into the book of Mosiah, these verses were originally part of the book of Mosiah and should be included with it. -

ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract In the Book of Mormon, two records (a large engraved stone and twenty-four gold plates) contain the story of an ancient civilization known as the Jaredites. There appears to be evidence of an unpublished third record that provides more information on this people and on the history of the world. When the brother of Jared received a vision of Jesus Christ, he was taught many things but was instructed not to share them with the world until the time of his death. The author proposes that the brother of Jared did, in fact, write those things down shortly before his death and then buried them, along with the interpreting stones, to be revealed to the world according to the timing of the Lord. -

RUBENSTEIN INTRODUCTION he festival of Sukkot (sometimes translated as “Booths” or “Tabernacles”) is one of the three pilgrimage festivals T(shalosh regalim). Celebrated for seven days, from the 15th to 21st of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, Sukkot is followed immediately by the festival of Shemini Atzeret (the “Eighth-day Assembly”), on the 22nd of Tishrei, thus creating an eight-day festival in all. In post-Talmudic times in the Diaspora, where the festivals were celebrated for an extra day, the second day of Shemini Atzeret, the 23rd of Tishrei, became known as “Simchat Torah” (“The Rejoicing for the Torah”) and developed a new festival identity. Like the other pilgrimage holidays, Pesach and Shavuot, Sukkot, includes both agricultural and historical dimensions, and the festival’s name can be explained with reference to either. The Torah connects the name “Sukkot” to the “booths” in which the Israelites dwelled throughout their desert sojourn: You shall live in sukkot seven days; all citizens in Israel shall live in sukkot, in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt; I am the Lord.1 As such the commandment to reside in booths links the festival to the historic exodus from Egypt and commemorates the experience of the Israelites as they wandered through the desert. -

Lesson 16 - Judges 9 & 10 The Book of Judges Lesson 16 - Chapters 9 and 10 We’ll continue today in Judges chapter 9, the story of Avimelech (known more as Abimelech in English) the son of Gideon born of a Shechemite concubine. Let’s briefly review: Gideon had 70 sons by his legal wives and one son by a Canaanite woman from the city of Shechem. This meant that Gideon became a very wealthy man and lived a kingly lifestyle. Gideon’s 70 legal wives were Hebrew women; his concubine (Avimelech’s mother) was the exception. As Avimelech matured he became brutally ambitious and wanted to begin his own kingdom, so he strategized and decided the best place to start was with the ethnically mixed city of Shechem, his mother’s family’s hometown. Shechem was a city that called Ba’al its god. There was a temple to Ba’al built there, and both the Canaanites and the Hebrews who lived in Shechem bowed down to this god. Avimelech convinced his mother’s family to back him in approaching the townspeople with a proposition: let me be your king. They agreed; the underlying reasoning was that Avimelech appealed to both major ethnic groups since he was half Canaanite and half Hebrew. This step of his plan accomplished, Avimelech took the Machiavellian approach to obtaining and maintaining his hoped-for power and authority by hiring some thugs from Shechem to help him murder all 70 of his brothers; however one brother, the youngest, escaped the slaughter. This surviving son of Gideon was named Yotam (Jotham is the usual English rendering) and when Yotam found out that the people of Shechem intended on crowning Avimelech as their king, he climbed up Mt. -
